Westland Offers Reward Recycling Program Updated: Wednesday, 26 Aug 2009, 1:56 PM EDT Published : Wednesday, 26 Aug 2009, 1:56 PM EDT It's one of the few cities in the state to offer a rewards-base recycling program. The city of Westland is finding new and innovative to get people to go green. Click the video player to watch a report from FOX 2's Robin Schwartz. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/dpp/news/foxe_reports/Westland_Recycling Westland started this 'go green' commitment just a few months ago. Curbside Recyling We are happy to announce a brand new, city-wide single-stream curbside recycling program that rewards you for recycling through an innovative program called RecyleBank, which allows you to save hundreds of dollars a year on groceries, pharmacy needs, clothes and restaurants through your recycling efforts. What is RecycleBank? Through a partnership with RecycleBank, households like yours will earn RecycleBank Points based on the weight of your community’s recyclables. You can redeem your RecycleBank Points for rewards from hundreds of national and local businesses like, Kraft, Bed Bath and Beyond, Dick’s Sporting Goods, the Westland Shopping Center, Marvaso’s, Heartland Marketplace and Nankin Hardware to name a few. Our local schools and charities can even benefit when you choose to donate your RecycleBank Points. Recylced items are picked up every other week; bin is huge, more than enough room. bin is weighed when being lifted by one armed bandit. |
| I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG. | |

I was waiting for this topic to pop up. Last May, I contacted our mayor about curbside revenue-sharing recycling, and I received the following on June 3, 2009: Mr. and Mrs. Krome, On behalf of Mayor Kirksey, thank you for the suggestion. The City is, indeed, very interested in this concept. One of our employees attended a meeting recently with the Conference of Western Wayne where the representative of a neighboring community was outlining how it works there. We will definitely be following up on this concept, since it appears to be a true win-win situation. While we still don't know all of the details, one potential delay is that the City's current trash hauling contract extends through November of 2010. Once again, thanks for contacting the Mayor with your input. Sincerely, Dave Varga Director of Administrative Services Office of Mayor Jack Kirksey (734) 466-2203 dvarga@ci.livonia.mi.us AK NOTE: Mr. Varga is very responsive to the public, and I thank him for his prompt reply regarding Livonia revenue-sharing recycling. |

I have a question...maybe someone on here can answer. What is the point of seperating our recycling materials when WasteManagement just tosses it all in the back of their truck? I haven't seen them seperate it into different bin's, just pick the orange tote up and toss it all into what looks like the back of a regular garbage truck. How is it then possible to seperate the items, especially batteries? |

In single-stream recycling, the mixed materials are separated at a specialized recycling center using various methods such as magnets, screens and optical sorting. So there is no point in separating them at the curb. Biggest problem with reward-based recycling is that these days recycled materials are of little value. Initially when recycling programs started there were big premiums paid to purchase recycled materials which were often partially paid back to the local community. These days we pay for recycling, not make money off of it. In the last year alone the sale cost of paper dropped from well over $100/ton down to less than $20/ton. If you set up rewards-based recycling, how can you afford to pay out rewards when the value of the materials drops? Bribing residents to recycle is not a fiscally responsible solution. |

Injuneer, Thanks for the answer. So I am asuming the information on the Livonia site regarding how to recycle in the city is outdated. Maybe if more residents knew they didn't have to seperate everything then perhaps those who didn't recycle because they thought it was a pain, will begin to do so. I also agree that the incentive probably wouldn't be great enough to get those who don't recycle to change their ways. I'm curious as to what the rewards are from area merchants and how many points and how long it would take to earn them. However, this could be a good program to get children and teens involved in helping with the recycling if they could earn real rewards. Maybe help a struggling family financially by replacing a monetary allowence for children with points rewards. I commend any city who tries to improve awareness of our environment and encourage its residents to recycle. |

Yes, the information is outdated. Just toss it all into the bin and you're done. It is certainly much easier than it used to be. |
