I noticed this afternoon that the city removed the stop signs on Lyndon at Hubbard. ^o) What an incredible waste of taxpayer money. How many injured school children will it take for them to return the signs?

Oh, no. That is not good. Does anyone know a policeman? They know those intersections. These are children!

Great, so people can get on Lyndon and only have to stop ONCE in a two mile stretch between Farmington and Middlebelt. ^o)

Welcome to the club. They have been doing that all over town, and right where children cross for school as well as right in front of the schools. If they did it just recently it was probably cuz the bus routes needed to be sped up for this year. It has nothing to do with the safety of the children.

@ IlikeLivonia....it has nothing to do with the schools or buses. It has everything to do with the City trying to be in compliance with the State of Michigan. There isn't enough foot or vehicle traffic to warrant a stop sign in the vast majority of areas around the city. This is their interpretation, not mine. We lost many stop signs in our neighborhood, the especially troubling ones are those directly near our school. We have dealt with the loss of a signal where students needed to cross from one neighborhood to another and they have to cross West Chicago without a stop sign or crossing guard. These are elementary school aged kids....where's the logic? Non-existent in my opinion...we have been very fortunate...(knock on wood) to not have had any kids get hit by cars but there have been many close calls from what I have heard. Apparently, Livonia is willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice as long as they aren't liable. Don't waste your breathe with the police they are wasting too much time making revenue with the speed traps to give a care about our situations.

I had heard this removal reasoning as well. Someone is running for CC who is frustrated with this "sign policy." I believe it is Mr. McCusker.

I am equally terrified we're going to have an accident. But, I do believe that the police are "helping" LPS speed up those buses to some extent. Mayor Kirksey has a great deal of influence on the traffic commission and the BOE.

Just look at who is backing whom in the CC elections. Mayor Kirksey has hand-picked Ms. Scheel to be the "woman" vote against Ms. Brosnan. If Ms. Scheel wins, it will further his power over CC.

Everyone knows this.

Sorry. I know off-topic a bit, but I'm trying to illustrate that the Mayor and the BOE are very close. Remember, the Mayor was the BOE "consultant" on polluted Cooper. Plus, there was supposed to be a soccer place at the shuttered old Walmart (96/Middlebelt).

Just seems like a convenient coincidence.

And sadly enough, I have read the law they are trying to come into compliance with and the actual law is hazy enough that they don't actually HAVE to do any stop sign removal. I think that whoever is in charge just can't stand to be bothered with stopping when they are driving.

great idea - maybe we could get our kids to dodge the cars at those intersections when they are at school

we will call it "RECESS"

Has anyone noticed the stop sign removals occurring in any other city? We often visit an area (North Westland/Livonia schools) and it appears that all of their stop signs are intact. The same with a neighborhood in s/e Farmington. If Livonia is simply trying to follow State guidelines, why aren't we seeing this in other communities?

If you are taking down STOP signs, put a cop at the intersection and start doling out tickets to pay for that ugly monstrosity by the library called a courthouse.

No other city or township within 10 miles of Livonia is doing the same thing. I have been through them all and they all have the pre-existing stop signs in their neighborhoods, especially near schools!

It is my understanding that what they are trying to be in compliance with are guidelines. I believe a city has the right to put stop signs anywhere it wants to. It is absurd that they are taking so many signs down. Lyndon and Hubbard just blows my mind. That shouldn't be a 4 way stop?????? Hopefully no one gets hurt in the accident that is surely coming. No where else are signs disappearing the way they are in Livonia.

I love teaching.
I really hope that Scheel doesn't win over Brosnan. I have invited Maureen to come over and do a coffee chat with neighbors before the election and she is up for it. I think we are going to have to get to work!

I am at work today and have asked several coworkers about their city. So far Westland, Canton, Plymouth, Ypsilanti and Northville residents are reporting NO stop sign removal in their neighborhoods. Granted, I have only asked 5 people.
A friend who lives on a corner where a stop sign was removed last year told me that there has been 4 accidents he knows of at his corner this year where he can only count 2 or 3 in the past 30 year before that.
This is absurd! How much does a pedestrian crossing sign cost? How much do we pay the city workers to hang those signs?

That is hardly the question. How much is a childs life worth is what should be asked. I think it's a lot more than the supposed savings the Traffic Commission (currently run by a kirkseyite - the former chairman quit over this issue) is telling the public it is worth.

Bottom line with these folks isn't the residents lives, it's money.

This city is begging young families to move back in and then they go and remove the very stop signs that make mothers with young children comfortable walking to the park. ^o)
