Felician Sisters to build school for Montessori center
August 11, 2009

The Felician Sisters of Livonia broke ground July 31 on a new standalone building for the Montessori Center of Our Lady.

Scheduled to open in the fall of 2010, the building will be constructed on the western side of the Felician Sisters' Livonia campus, just off Newburgh Road. It will accommodate 124 students.

The school is currently located on the lower level of the Felician Provincial House, where space limits the number of students to 90.

Montessori Center of Our Lady was founded 33 years ago by Sister Mary Paulita Bikowski, CSSF, as a preschool where children are taught to explore the world using a variety of methods. With an initial enrollment of five students, the Montessori Center has grown substantially over the years.

The school specializes in the education of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students with a 1:5 faculty-to-student ratio.

The Montessori Center is one of several ministries of the Felician Sisters of Livonia. Others include Ladywood High School and Madonna University.

A groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey, as well as Livonia City Councilmen Joe Laura and James C. McCann. Sister Mary Renetta Rumpz, CSSF, provincial minister of the Livonia Felician Sisters, gave the introductory speech, and the Rev. Timothy Babcock presided.
