I don't think I will ever use the chemicals again. My friend's kid ended up in the emergency room b/c of it. Coat hair and scalp with olive oil and sleep with that on with a shower cap - or better - a bathing cap. Put towels over sheets to protect them. I've figured out the right amount to use by applying it with a color applicator. It does the trick to kill the lice but picking the nits out EVERY DAY is essential. Nit pick for at least two weeks. |

Mikki~ Do you have any idea where your girls may have picked up the lice? People keep asking me, but I don't have much of an idea... no one we know told us they had lice, she isn't in summer SACC or daycare. The only thing we can think of is at the swim club, but lice don't swim.. maybe from all the towels laying around? Don't know, like I said, no one mentioned anything to me about it. |

Have you been to the movies recently? The little critters may have been on the seat from the person who sat there before you. |

Nope, not lately... but she may have had them for a while and I do think she was at the movies 2-3 weeks before with friends. I have a whole new outlook on going to the movies. From now on I'm bringing a terry cloth jacket to throw over the back of the seat and put directly into the wash and HOT dryer. |

Lice have hit my daughters' day camp. We were out of town when they broke out, so I'm REALLY hoping we missed it. One of the moms at the day camp said that they went to Rite Aid for RID and they were sold out. The clerk said Livonia's been hit hard. |

EO~ I hope for your sake you missed it, too. You know how to find me if you need an opinion of a "Lice Expert" as my husband has begun to call me. |

A friend sent this to me via email and I have answered in red.: "I was reading your lice thread and here's the questions that immediately popped into my head. You may want to post answers so the stupid people who don't do research will have the answers at their fingertips. Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner - where do you buy this stuff? I have seen this at Walgreens, in the section with Burt's Bee stuff. It is a little pricey. You can just add Tea Tree oil to any conditioner, that's what I did. I saw that at Walgreens, too, but I purchased mine at Zerbo's ~ who had a big selection and price range. Does the lice always stay on the head or can it move to hairy arms and legs? NO, they like the head. Are those combs available in local stores?" Not that I know of. I bought my at www.nitfreecomb.com. It's not fool proof, but it's the best thing out there IMO. I also saw the Castile soap at Walgreens - something like $12 or up. It had peppermint in it, which can't hurt. I think you can get this at Zerbo's, too. I really like Zerbo's b/c the staff is helpful and seem to know what they are talking about. They had lice shampoo, very pricey though, I think $24. I know that Zerbo's has all the essential oils needed to make some different shampoo/deterrents I have seen online. I'll list it if someone want it. Edited by Momof4, Aug 5 2009, 09:44 PM.

Yikes! "Stupid People"... LOL I think any and all of us that have had to deal with the critters have done a lot of research and have chosen wisely... hopefully. I have seen the combs at Wallgreen's also if anyone is looking. ![]() I agree about the RID. We are only using it once. As a teacher, I know that the oil you are referring to isn't always effective. I see it recurring in my classroom. Or, maybe they aren't being diligent about the nits? I am sure there is more than one way to kill the beasts! It appears that they are gone from my kids. I just wish I knew where they picked it up. |

I am definitely going to look for those combs at Walgreens. The olive oil worked for us, but my girlfriend is now going thru it and it didn't work for her. She did RID on Tues., there were still bugs on Weds. Olive oil last night and still bugs. I told her to saturate the hair b/c she didn't the first time. BUT... picking those nits are the key to getting rid of them for good. I too wish I knew where my daughter and her friend "found" them. BTW, her friend not see my daughter when she had bugs then took a 2 week vacation, which is where he may have picked them up. They seem to be gone, but I can't seem to stop being paranoid. |

Me either! My girls hair is so stinking short right now. Shorter than it has ever been before. And, they were both growing it out. During the school year, be sure to put hair spray on your kids hair. Lice doesn't like hair spray.

Both I and my daughters have been wearing our hair back and spraying the living daylights out of it. I'm sick of looking at myself with this stinking french braid, but won't wear it down, even when all the kids were gone this weekend. I'm paranoid and not afraid to admit it. |
