We go to Henry Ford Optimeyes in Westland by the mall. Our doc is Dr. Lizynees (sp?). We really like him and they take our insurance.

Haggerty Costco optometrist, Dr. Stein, charges $55. for a basic but quite thorough eye exam. $10 more for dialation.
$95 for a contact exam which includes both the eye glass and contact prescriptions, fitting and follow-up plus a trial pair.

Insurance accepted is Spectera, but you also get a receipt to submit to your carrier if eye exams are covered, Costco optometrist doesn't do the billing for other carriers.
Hours are similar to Costco hours, but not open on Sundays.

If you think there may be a problem with your kids eyes, I would suggest a Pediatric Ophthalmologist, not an optometrist. They are more expensive, but more likely to catch a problem, if there is one.

Years ago, a friend of mine took her child to an optometrist. After the exam, he suggested she 'patch' her childs good eye for a few hours a day to strengthen the bad eye. Her child kept telling her he couldn't see with the patch on. After a few weeks of this, she was frustrated and went to an ophthalmologist and found out that he really couldn't see from the bad eye (or rather, could see very little) and no amount of patching would help this permanent condition!

My thought would be if they have never been to an eye doc of any kind, I'd pop for the pediatric ophthalmologist for one visit, but that's just me. My son has worn glasses since he was in kindergarten. He is going into 9th grade now. We have been with Dr Rebecca Tisch from day 1. Our dr is fantastic, no exaggeration. Her office staff is kind, courteous, respectful of adults and kids alike. They work with you to best suit your appt needs. The dr talks to the kids, not the parents, makes them feel comfortable. Of course, I am in the room during the exam, so if there are any questions my son can't answer, I am there. An example of how they understand your time is important, too...We once had to wait about a half hour past our appt time to see the dr. Come to find out, she had a rather difficult patient, and that appt ran long. She apologized profusely for making us wait and asked the receptionist to wave our co-pay! It was a small gesture, but hey, she could have said nothing and moved on.

We've been very happy with Dr. Carver. He is located on the SW corner of 6 and Newburgh.

He is an opthamologist not optometrist.

Our son has also been to see Dr. Tisch. I had the same experience with her as the poster above. She is a great doctor. I would recommend her to anyone.

After seeing my Ophthalmologist, he refered me to Dr. Stein @ Costco on Haggerty. He was very good. Iwould reccommend. Also....glasses and contacts are very good prices.

My experiences with Dr. Tisch are very different than the postings here.

-We would wait no less than one hour to see her.

-She would not allow me to make an appointment for more than 2 of my kids at a time (I have three.) The rationale being, if I canceled it would leave too big a hole in her schedule. I had never canceled or not shown up.

- On one occasion, she wrote my daughters prescription incorrectly. Six months after the script was written we had a follow up appt. She checked the glasses, they were wrong. I went back to Costco, they checked them and claimed they were made according to the prescription. In all I went back and forth between her office and the Livonia - Haggerty Costco FOUR times. She only conceded her error because I had the original prescription. While I understand accidents happen, it's hard to swallow that my daughter ran around with the wrong prescription for 6 months.

- billing/insurance was always an issue

- She came highly recommended and while I'm certain she is a talented doctor, there were too many inconveniences to put with.
