LIEpa gets another contract extension

In a 4-2 vote Monday, the Livonia school board extended Supt. Randy Liepa's contract another year, pushing the expiration date to June 2014.

Trustees Patrice Mang and Steve King voted no, saying the five-year agreement is longer than the terms being served by all sitting board members and incoming board member Colleen Burton, who takes office July 8. Board members typically are elected to four-year terms.

“I just think it ties the hands of future boards,” Mang said of the contract after the meeting.

Trustee Gregory Oke was absent from the meeting.

Mang said she has no issue with Liepa's performance, which the board recently critiqued in closed session. “I think that his evaluation was fair and that his performance is within the guidelines set by the board,” Mang said. “I don't have any reason to be upset with him or the job he's doing.”

The contract calls for a salary freeze. Liepa's annual salary, including all compensation except for insurance, remains at $148,918.

“He didn't even ask the board for a raise,” Mang said. The board faces a $7.5 million deficit in its $160 million budget for the 2009-10 school year.

Trustee Daniel Lessard said he doesn't think the length of the contract is out of line, given the job Liepa is doing.

“I think we've got one of the best superintendents around,” he said.

He said the current board implements policies adopted by previous boards. “We're responsible for policies that were written 20 years ago, and they're still valid,” he said. “It makes no difference when they were written.”

Lessard said the district is getting Liepa's services for a “real bargain.” Some superintendents in smaller districts make “a great deal more money” than he does, Lessard said. Livonia has about 17,000 students.

Trustee Lynda Scheel agreed Liepa's doing an “excellent job” and he's “well worth” the salary. She said she appreciates his efforts to keep costs down by contributing $1,000 a year toward his health care.

She said given the district's financial situation, extending Liepa's contract was the most the board could do for him.

Liepa became superintendent in 2003.

Quite the discussion about this on the O/E site.

What a joke! Any CEO of a company would be fired, not rewarded for the poor performance LIEpa has given.

Both Scheel and LESSard are true Liepa followers. As usual their comments show their ignorance of the schools.

Yes, I know these can be regarded as personal attacks, but I am so sick of the rubberstamping and undermining happening at these meetings. This man does not deserve a longer contract that the teachers who are working hard with the kids. It's a joke.

So, the liars on our school board continue to LIE about LIEpa. Why would you give LIEpa a 5 year contract extension? Livonia will have much bigger problems in 5 years than it does today. LIEpa can't fix today's problems, so why would the BOE think he can fix the problems over the next 5 years?

LESSard is so UNinformed, that his comments don't even make sense. What job is LIEpa doing so great? Losing students, can't balance a budget, etc. I would reward that performance with a trip to the unemployment line.

Scheel, look around, everybody is contributing towards their health care these days. He's not doing anything any different the the average citizen who is INSURING A FAMILY of FIVE.

Instead of a contract extension, the board should be giving him a PINK SLIP !!!!

I can't believe how STUPID this board is (except for Mang and King) LIEpa is dishing out BS and those other 5 imcompetents are taking it - hook, line and sinker.

Hellooo ~ let's not crown LIEpa king of concessions b/c he pays a measly $1,000 to health care. I pay over $7,000 for health care. That is with no prescription coverage and a big deductible.

LESSard can go on and on about what a "bargain" we have in LIEpa, but there are plenty of people who could do a better job for less. This board is not speaking for me!

Lynda, why do we have to do anything for him? Where's he going if you don't extend his contract? I highly doubt he would resign without the extension. I just don't get it.

The LBS continues. How do the BOE and Randy sleep at night? They are all doing a great disservice and injustice to our district.

It seems to me that all the BOE members present were satisfied with Liepa's performance, the 2 that voted no state that the only reason they voted no was because of the extra year of his extension, not because they were dissatisfied with the job he is doing.

Perhaps, knowing they were outvoted, they were just trying to be politically correct. I don't necessarily agree with that if that is what they did. They should have the decency and dignity to call it as they see it. The fact that there were 2 "NO" votes speaks more to their real thoughts than the quotes in the paper. Don't know if it is true but I did hear the OE misquoted one of the board members.

Misquote? Please do tell. As long as you preface with that you heard it through the grapevine, rumors are often very telling.

I am not sure if Mrs. Mang was misquoted but I did watch the BOE meeting on the computer and Steve King stated that the reason he voted no on Liepa's contract was because of the 5 years.
