Link 13 file for Livonia Council By Ken Abramczyk • Staff Writer • June 23, 2009 Thirteen candidates have filed to run for Livonia City Council, which in all likelihood means a primary election will be held Sept. 15. Four candidates filed Tuesday: Glenn Moon, former mayoral candidate Maureen Miller-Brosnan, Dianne Marietti and Steve King, a trustee with Livonia Public Schools. Mark McCusker and Conrad Schwartz filed Monday, while resident Steve Crosby filed Friday. Six other candidates had declared over the past several weeks: Council members Joe Laura, Jim McCann and John Pastor, Livonia Public Schools trustee Lynda Scheel, and residents Christopher John Martin and Lucas McGrail. There are four seats available. The candidates had a 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline to file with the clerk’s office. Anyone who wishes to withdraw has until 4 p.m. Friday to do so. If nine or more candidates remain in the field, voters will narrow that field to eight during the primary election. A general election will be held Nov. 3 to decide which four will serve on council. |

It matters not who runs if people do not take the candidates individually and ask them what they stand for. Here are 11 addresses and phone numbers that were available in public records--the phone book. I was unable to find two of them. It is important that the citizens of Livonia engage the candidates and ask questions about the future, not the past, their plans, not who they associate with. I hope the information helps in your research to determine which four you want to vote for: Glenn S Moon 34461 Wood St, 48154, 734-591-2530 Maureen Miller-Brosnan, 11320 Arden, 48150, 734-422-6912 Dianne Marietti, 15044 Fairway, 48154, phone unavailable Steve King, 15510 Surrey, 48154, 313-535-3313 Mark McCusker, 14034 Cranston, 48154, 734-261-8278 Conrad Schwartz Steve Crosby, Joe Laura, 35305 Curtis, 48152, 734-542-9778 Jim McCann, 18435 Mayfield, 48152, 248-471-4747 John Pastor, 18723 Vanderhaven, 48152, 248-888-0083 Lynda Scheel, 19980 Mayfield, 48152, 248-477-6374 Christopher John Martin, 12275 Inkster Road, 48150, 734-422-3519 Lucas McGrail, 9611 Cranston, 48150, 734-367-9028 |

Thank you, RTS. I agree that speaking to the candidates directly is an important thing for a voter to do. A candidate should be willing to speak to any voter about his/her views. |

Council field draws 6, so far By Ken Abramczyk • OBSERVER STAFF WRITER • June 14, 2009 This year's race for Livonia City Council expects to feature a few familiar faces and some new ones. So far, six candidates are running for four seats: council members Joe Laura, Jim McCann and John Pastor, Livonia Public Schools trustee Lynda Scheel, and residents Christopher John Martin and Lucas McGrail. Those who wish to run have until 4 p.m. June 23 to file their candidacy with the clerk's office, and 4 p.m. June 26 to withdraw. Should nine or more candidates remain in the race, a primary election will be held Sept. 15 when voters narrow the candidates to eight. The general election will be Nov. 3. The fourth seat is occupied by Tom Robinson, who is term-limited. The council will need to help govern the city, which will be critical this year, Laura said. “It seems we have more bad news, and it will be difficult to govern in this environment,” Laura said. “I have shown that I stand up for what I believe in.” Laura, a principal marketing manager with Rockwell Collins, will seek his fourth term on the council as he was elected in 1995, 1999 and 2005. Laura retired from Ford Motor Co. as a program manager. McCann, a public administrator/probate specialist appointed by the state attorney general and an attorney at his own Livonia-based law office, knows the city faces great challenges the next few years, but he wanted to run again to help with those challenges. “I have a very close working relationship with Mayor Jack Kirksey and the council generally has a good relationship with Mayor Kirksey. We're looking at extraordinary times within the next two years.” “My background and my ability to help administrate will help Jack with the next two years,” McCann said. “It will be difficult to get costs in line.” McCann was appointed to fill an unexpired term through December 2005, and was elected in 2005 to a four-year term. He also served as council president in 2006 and 2007. Pastor was appointed in March to fill the vacancy created by Don Knapp's appointment as city attorney, Pastor was elected to a two-year term in 1997 and in 1999. “I think I can make a difference,” Pastor said. “I bring the experience as a state representative, councilman, planning commissioner, zoning board member, traffic commissioner and being in business and being out in the real world.” Scheel, who also serves on the city Planning Commission and the Brownfield Authority, has always been interested in serving the community, she said. “There are a lot of challenges coming up and a lot of important decisions to be made,” Scheel said. “We need good strong council members who are willing to make tough decisions. We need to get information to the citizens and keep information to residents going.” Chris Martin, who ran two years ago and received 5,060 votes and spent $1,000 of his own money on the campaign, said he wants to represent the “average Joe.” “I don't represent a political party, I don't represent the mayor, I don't represent any group because I don't ask for any political contributions,” Martin said. Martin, who retired as a leader of skilled trades from the GM Tech Center in Warren, said he did well two years ago without knocking on any doors. “I think they are looking for an average Joe,” Martin said. “And I've worked on factory jobs all my life.” Lucas McGrail, an architect, said he is running to use his skills and experience in architecture and construction management to improve the city for residents. McGrail was laid off from his job as an architect from Cannon Design, but had planned to run before then. “We've lived in Livonia since 2003 and we're seeing different things, and saying, ‘Someone should do something about it,'” McGrail said. http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20090614/NEWS10/906140484/1027/Council+field+draws+6++so+far 13 file for 4 council seats By Ken Abramczyk • OBSERVER STAFF WRITER • June 25, 2009 Thirteen candidates have filed to run for four seats on the Livonia City Council, which probably means a primary election will be held Sept. 15. Four candidates filed Tuesday: Glenn Moon, former mayoral candidate Maureen Miller-Brosnan, Dianne Marietti and Steve King, a trustee with Livonia Public Schools. Mark McCusker and Conrad Schwartz filed Monday, while resident Steve Crosby filed Friday. Six other candidates had declared over the past several weeks: Council members Joe Laura, Jim McCann and John Pastor, Livonia Public Schools trustee Lynda Scheel, and residents Christopher John Martin and Lucas McGrail. This week, the latest candidates who filed are running for a variety of reasons. Steve King looked at the first list of candidates. “And it was more of the same, and I wanted to run to give people an option,” King said. “I think what we have is a violation of term limits,” King said. “What we have is more of a time out (for council members), and then they can come back.” Dianne Marietti has been actively involved in the community for 20 years. “I'm a 22-year resident of Livonia, wanting to represent the residents of the city by being accessible and responsive to the citizens through listening to their contentments and concerns,” Marietti said. Marietti has volunteered for Spree and as a past Spree committee member, and Livonia Goodfellows, and took an active role last year against the annexation of the property in Northville Township. Another community volunteer, Mark McCusker, is running because he is frustrated by the city's response to his and other residents' concerns about the removal of stop signs at Hubbard and Perth at Kennedy Elementary School. “I gathered 1,100 signatures the last election day to appeal the traffic commission's decision and I got nowhere,” said McCusker, president of Kimberly Oaks subdivision. McCusker believes it makes more economic sense to put the stop signs there rather than add another crossing guard. Glenn Moon said he is running because the country is lost and he has been called by the Holy Spirit to lead lost souls to Jesus Christ. “Livonia, pick up your trash,” Moon said. “You see trash in front of your house, you see trash in front of your business. Pick up your trash.” Conrad Schwartz, a retired redevelopment specialist with General Motors, believes the city needs to redevelop quickly. “I think if you look at the situation in Livonia, fast forward 10 years and things are going to be tough,” Schwartz said. “Unless we do something to retain businesses, Livonia will be the next Highland Park. You start with the economy and the financial health of the city, and if you look at what's happened to Livonia, two major GM plants have closed and a third is about to close. Retail centers are being abandoned. You don't see the retail you used to on Plymouth. “This downward spiral will continue unless you stop it now.” Schwartz believes his experience can help redevelop some of the city's vacant properties. Maureen Miller-Brosnan and Steve Crosby were left messages, but could not be reached for comment. The candidates had a 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline to file with the clerk's office. Anyone who wishes to withdraw has until 4 p.m. Friday to do so. If nine or more candidates remain in the field, voters will narrow that field to eight during the primary election. A general election will be held Nov. 3 to decide which four will serve on the council. kabramcz@hometownlife.com | (313) 222-2591 http://www.hometownlife.com/article/20090625/NEWS10/906250543/1027/13+file+for+4+council+seats |
