For those of you planning a garden this year, Block's is open! For any not familiar with Blocks....they are a huge greenhouse (several actually) with prices that can't be beat. They are located at Middlebelt and Eureka. I stopped at Schwartz's too (Sibley, west of Middlebelt)...they have lovely plants (great planters) also but are slightly higher than Block's. Since it is still a little early, not all vegetables have sprouted yet but tons of tomatos, peppers, herbs, etc. Having a sale on small perennials, $2.99 each. |

Block's is great, but try to avoid the weekend. What a zoo! Also, I believe "Michigan planting day" is June 10th or somewhere along there. It could most likely still frost and become very cold before then. You know how crazy Michigan weather is. If you buy early, be sure to cover your plants if night/day temps get too low. The 40s are too low, especially for succulents. Right now, Pansies are terrific. They love the cold and are very bright to add to the garden right now. When summer heat comes, they will get leggy and die off, if in direct sunlight. If watered well and in the shade all day, they might last longer in heat. It's also a great time to plant Evergreens, such as pines, arbovitaes. You won't have to water as much and they will take hold before summer heat. Spring/fall are great times to plant hearty perennials. AK |

Have you ever lost a favorite gardening tool in the compost, underneath foliage or accidentally thrown out with the twigs? I have. Try binding hand tools with brightly colored, strong tape to increase their visibility. |

You're right Anna, both about the earliness in the season and Block's crazy crowds. I have never purchased this early but this has seemed like such a long, hard winter, I couldn't resist, plus the crowds were minimal on that weekend. Of course I haven't planted yet and had to tote them into the garage last night. While most gardeners I know feel pretty safe planting around Mother's Day, this is Michigan so nothing is 100%. Any gardeners out there have any ideas/plans for a make it yourself, off the ground, compost bin? |

I can't resist either. I just bought some pansies. I've used wooden pallets to make compost bins. You could line with heavy-duty trash bags. I had to have help from the husband. Too heavy to lift on my own. I used to get them from the publishing house I used to work for. They were just trashing them after one use. You might be able to get some for free from a warehouse or something. |
