Try outs for soccer will soon be here. Tryouts were disappointing for us last year - so for a variety of reasons, we are looking elsewhere. An internet search makes me believe that club websites (the ones I could find) are fairly useless in providing parents the nitty-gritty details (total costs) as well as the "feel" of the club (how do they communicate with parents, is soccer expected to be a year round sport or are kids able to play other sports?). Add to that, almost all club's tryout dates are the same or overlap making it more difficult for parents to gather information. I also think that there are clubs in our area that are hard for parents to locate because they are new, fairly small, etc. Clubs I'm aware of: Waza, YMCA, LCSC, Vardar. I know there are many more in surrounding communities but I am looking for information on teams based in Livonia. Any information would be great.

What is the total cost?
*club/team fees? (if published, this is typically the only thing included)
*extra cost for tournaments? out of state? in-state? how many per season?
*is indoor winter soccer required? where do they play indoors? how many sessions? what is this fee
*any additional costs for trainers?
*uniform costs? what other team wear is required/strongly encouraged besides the uniform (warm-ups, backpacks, teamball, etc.)?
*summer camps required/strongly encouraged? fee?

What league does the club play in? Western Suburb and Michigan Youth Soccer are two....are there others in the area?

How many games each season?

Where is the practice field?

Certification of coaches? Background checks?

How are tryouts run?

Other questions I don't know I should be asking?

Hi For4!

I can only answer for LCSC as that is the club my son plays for. I'll do my best!

What is the total cost?
*club/team fees? (if published, this is typically the only thing included) $750
*extra cost for tournaments? out of state? in-state? how many per season? My son's team has two tourny's this spring. One in Kalamazoo and one in Novi. We didn't have any last fall. I think it is up to the coach which tourny's you attend. Although I heard that LSCS was trying to get all Select teams to the same tournament once a year? You pay out-of-pocket for this. Also, we are paying for our coaches room in Kazoo. Some other members that have been on other teams have said this is something teams usually do? (I personally don't agree with that tradition)
*is indoor winter soccer required? where do they play indoors? how many sessions? what is this fee? Indoor was not required for my son's team. I don't know about other teams requirements. They ended up playing two sessions at High Velocity in Canton. I know other teams played at Total Soccer in Wixom, as well. It was approx. $85 per session. The coach does NOT get paid for doing indoor.
*any additional costs for trainers? Never had a trainer with the boys. My son's coach plays soccer for his college. He has PLENTY of knowledge!
*uniform costs? what other team wear is required/strongly encouraged besides the uniform (warm-ups, backpacks, teamball, etc.)? I think we spent approx. $130 for his required uniform things. Including one home uniform, one away uniform, 2 pairs of socks. Don't forget you get to pay for shoes and shin guards, too. We were not required to purchase anything extra, so we didn't. I think other teams may have been asked to buy the warm-ups and backpacks.
*summer camps required/strongly encouraged? fee? This is my son's first year on Select. We have not been told that he should do a summer camp.

I believe LCSC is Michigan Youth Soccer.
There are between 8 and 10 games per season.
My son practices at Dickinson.
I know they do background checks on ALL coaches and team managers. I am unsure about the certifications.
Tryouts are being held at Dickinson on June 15-17 this year. Not sure how they are run, but that is another long story!!!

Hope this helps you out some.

My son plays for St. Mike's CYO soccer. It is a great program and not a lot of money. Do you belong to a parish where you might be able to have your child play?

Well, to be honest, LCSC hasn't been that bad over the years. My 14 year old has been playing with the club since he was in 2nd or 3rd grade. We had one fall with a bad coach and that was it.

My 11 year old has played rec since 2nd grade and was on a Select team for the first time starting last fall. We have had a pretty good experience with that, too.

Nothing has happened with either of my kids teams to actually call LCSC a 'joke'! I know kids who have been with Canton, Farmingtion, and Novi that came back to LCSC because they didn't like those clubs.

Thanks for all the info Spanky. It looks like all tryouts are June 15th-17th....it must be a league rule? or they don't want kids/families shopping around? Ii wish other parents would chime in with some of the info we all are looking for. We are looking for a higher level of play than rec. soccer but refuse to eat, sleep, live soccer 12 months a year. I hate the idea that kids are specializing in one sport at such a young age and with an almost 12 month commitment for soccer or hockey or just about daily football for 4 months, they are discouraging kids from playing anything but one sport.

Tryouts are at Dickinson $$

Tryouts are at Livonia Jaycee Park $$$

Tryouts at Total Soccer Wixom $$$$ Better be ready to eat, sleep, live soccer.

I've heard the YMCA is getting out of select soccer

I couldn't agree more. The level of committment for most kids' sports is absurd and completely out of control. There are very few things left that you can do once or twice a week for a reasonable season. If you have more than one child in sports or if both parents work during the day, the sports take over your entire family time and you can forget about home cooked family dinners together. I am not willing to sacrifice that, so my children's sports options are very limited. Soccer, football and hockey are not possible.

My son has had 2 years in a row of horrible coaching issues. They promise next year will be better.
