A friend of mine just informed me that Granholm changed every ones W-4 witholdings to 0 exemptions for Michigan efective Jan.1 2008.If you want to change it back then you need to change it yourself. I checked my husbands pay stub and sure as heck they are taking out alot more than in 2007.
I was told that she did this so that the state could get more money up front. Yes you may get it back next year but I would rather have it now. And that they are hoping that not everyone chages it.
Has anyone heard of this?????

The schools exist to educate, not employ.
Sorry, but I can't find anything on it.

I love teaching.
I usually claim 0 anyway. But, I can see where that would be irritating.

Sorry but I cannot afford to claim zero. I have to claim what I have for dependents just to make ends meet week to week. And I sure as hell cannot afford to wait for the state to reimburse me for money of mine they have held all year!

I can't afford it either, but I don't want to get caught paying out at tax time.

The rumor is not true. Your signature is needed to change withholding on earned income.

The only possible loophole I see is that the state and federal governments come up with the tax tables and procedures used to calculate the withholding, and provide period updates to payroll software and payroll service companies. That same information is ultimately used to determine the tax when you file your return, so I can't see how they could possibly make it all work out. Can anyone else?

My suspicion is this myth is busted. :)

However, those updates happen because tax law changes every year. The state could certainly change the calculation methods accordingly from one year to the next, resulting in a change in the withholding on your check.
