O&E to leave headquarters, stay in Livonia

The Observer & Eccentric is planning to move from its longtime headquarters at the corner of Levan and Schoolcraft to a new office site in Livonia this year. The new location hasn’t been determined yet.

The move makes sense in the current business world, according to Peter Neill, vice president and general manager of the Observer & Eccentric/Mirror Newspapers. The newspaper has been based in the 54,000-square-foot building since 1971 and the space is now much larger than the newspaper’s staff needs.

“This is all part of the remaking of the O&E for the 21st century,” Neill said. “We will not be deserting our communities — after all, community newspapering is what we do best. Our advertising and editorial departments will remain integral parts of the communities which we serve.”

Printing of newspapers at the O&E’s three-story presses was halted in August, when the production process was moved to Port Huron, a facility that, like the O&E, is owned by Gannett Co. Inc.

Gannett Co. is the majority owner of The Detroit Media Partnership, which runs the business operations of the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News. The Detroit Media Partnership assumed administrative and financial oversight of the O&E group on Jan. 1, 2008.

The O&E will continue to maintain offices in Birmingham and Rochester; it will also maintain a presence in Plymouth. “We recognize that our presence in those communities is important to our continued success,” Neill said. “We will continue to explore opportunities with our DMP colleagues to ensure the future of community newspapers in Western Wayne and Oakland counties and beyond,” he added.

What an ideal place for an indoor sports center
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.
