Hi everyone,

Attached is a flyer with the details for our upcoming Community Meetings for the Livonia Public Schools' Shared Vision.

Please join us at one of the Community Meetings on February 20, 21, or 25 to give us input on which areas of our Vision should be our district priorities at this time.

The meetings will last no longer than 45 minutes, including a short presentation and completing the Shared Vision survey. Parents and community members can attend any of the meetings, regardless of location. Light refreshments will be served.

The Shared Vision survey will also be available on the district website from February 26 through March 10.

Thanks, and I hope to see you there!
Donna McDowell

The prelude to the Livonia Public Schools School District Shared Vision reads:

“The Livonia Public Schools stands as a lighthouse district, a beacon of excellence offering exceptional educational opportunities to all children and serving as a source of pride for our community. As a premier school system, we promote a passion for learning and a philosophy that puts the needs of children and their education first.”

LIVONIA: School district to seek accreditation
February 6, 2008

Livonia Public Schools will seek districtwide accreditation through the North Central Association Committee on Accreditation and School Improvement.

Individual schools will continue to be accredited, but the district process also examines the organization structure against seven standards, said Charlotte Worthen, director of instruction. Those standards align with the district's "shared vision," Worthen said.

A message from the Superintendent..

Welcome back! We are very excited about the start of a new school year. I trust that each of our parents and students will have a wonderful and memorable school experience this year. All community members are invited to visit us and help make our school district the centerpiece of activity in our community.

As we look forward to this year, we do so with a new sense of purpose based on our District Vision that over 2,500 Livonia Public Schools community members helped create last year. This exciting picture of our future provides an inspiring message of hope and promise. Our continuing work this fall focuses on the steps needed to reach our shared vision and we look forward to working with all of you on the priorities of our district. At the same time, our students continue to perform well in the classroom. We believe in continuous improvement and growth as we measure how our students are doing in school. Ongoing school improvement efforts at the building level are the catalysts in this effort. We continue to work on new and exciting ways to provide the very best for our students.

Despite ongoing budget challenges for our district and all districts across the state, we still offer a premier program and are recognized as providing outstanding educational opportunities for our community. We will continue to do all that we can to maintain this outstanding reputation.

Again, come visit us. We look forward to seeing all of you.

Vision Document

Livonia Public Schools stands as a lighthouse district, a beacon of excellence offering exceptional educational opportunities to all children and serving as a source of pride for our community. As a premier school system, we promote a passion for learning and a philosophy that puts the needs of children and their education first.

Climate and Environment

We are a caring community that knows and lifts every child. All employees, parents and community members appreciate and honor the unique contributions each brings to our education community. Therefore, we see a school district where we:

provide a safe, joyful, welcoming environment for all who enter and a place where students are eager to learn.
respect, value, empower and trust one another.
celebrate the uniqueness of each individual in a climate of acceptance and understanding.
value open, honest and two-way communication among all stakeholders (families, students, staff and community).
invite parents and community members to be active partners.
benefit from facilities that are updated, well maintained and inviting, including cutting-edge technology and equipment.
Engaged Learners

An exemplary learning community inspires and motivates all students to reach their full learning potential. Therefore, we see a school district where students:

experience joy in learning.
flourish in a learning environment where creativity and imagination abound.
are encouraged to give their personal best and challenged to go beyond the ordinary.
have their unique learning needs met.
experience learning that connects to the real world through a variety of opportunities for exploration.
are assessed using reliable and timely instruments that measure what students are expected to learn and guide instruction.
Enhancing Employee Capacity

As an exemplary school district, we operate on the premise that a school district can only be as good as the people that it employs. Therefore, we have a deep commitment to holding the highest standards for ourselves and others, and providing the opportunity to learn and grow. We see a school district where an empowered staff:

works cooperatively and collaboratively to expand their ability to support and improve student learning.
broadens the potential for success through innovative and creative ideas.
values and seeks meaningful individual professional development.
experiences focused professional development based upon best practices and current research.
uses state-of-the-art technology and equipment to enhance job effectiveness.
Organizational Capability

We understand that the pursuit of excellence requires persistence, tenacity and courageous patience. Therefore, we see a school district where our processes support:

continuous improvement in all that we do.
implementation of innovative ideas when determining structural and operational changes.
participative problem-solving and decision-making.
Outcomes for Our Students

Our schools excel at preparing each student for his/her life journey. Therefore, we see a school district where students are:

persons of character who are contributing members of society and life-long learners.
independent, confident and hopeful, with the skills to plan a successful future.
analytical and capable decision makers.
proficient in math, literacy, and communication skills.
prepared for future education and career opportunities.
This vision document provides the “imagination” of what we hope to become, a blueprint for continuous improvement, and the benchmarks by which we will evaluate our progress.
We dedicate ourselves to these ideals.

The schools exist to educate, not employ.
From Steve King's blog:

Vision Community Meeting

I attended the vision meeting at Franklin tonight and was disappointed. The districts latest PR piece was shown featuring Randy and other administrators talking about the process that led to our shared vision from several years ago. Why was John Hiltz on the video? This meeting was heavily orchestrated and controlled by the moderator Donna McDowell. The attendees were asked to fill out a bubble sheet survey that asked things they would not have knowledge of. If you want to know what the stakeholders are interested in you have to stop talking and listen. This meeting was proof positive that Vision means nothing without action.
“Child Abuse” means different things to different people....

John Hiltz is in the video because he is on the district school improvement team - the video said that.
