McLean, Kavanagh to run for Livonia judge post
By Dave Varga

The race to replace retiring Judge Robert Brzezinski Livonia’s 16th District Court already has two candidates, John “Jack” McLean and Sean P. Kavanagh.

Each announced their candidacy this week, three months before the filing deadline for the six-year position.

Each candidate has experience in the 16th District Court, including the fact that each served as court officer and clerk under former District Judge James R. McCann — McLean from 1976-78; Kavanagh in 1982.

Brzezinski is 71 and thus past the age allowed by state law (70) to run for re-election. He has served as a judge in the Livonia court since 1982.

A November primary will be forced if more than two candidates file for election.
McLean is a lifelong resident of Livonia and is a general practice attorney whose practice covers mostly criminal, but some civil, domestic and estate planning work.

Kavanagh has been city attorney for the past 12 years, was elected twice and served almost four years on Livonia City Council, and has a private practice. He’s been a resident about 25 years.

For more on the race, see this Thursday's Livonia Observer.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

Just a head's up to all; Sean Kavanaugh is a charter member of "Jack's Pack". He was appointed City Attorney when Jack became mayor the first time around and they worked out a cozy deal where Sean could be a "part time" city employee while he maintained his private practice. The City Attorney's position is supposed to be a full time job. Brace yourselves for what could be an ugly campaign.

And it continues with Knapp or McCann move into city attorney vacancy or throw hat in for judgeship; and the loser gets the city attorney vacany, the judgeship, or stays put to 'win' council presidency. The chains that link.

Walsh to run for state House seat

John Walsh hopes his job experience and public service history, and his maturity, will help serve the Livonia community if he's elected state representative in Lansing.

Walsh, a former Livonia councilman and current chair of the Planning Commission, announced Thursday he's running for 19th District state representative. Current Rep. John Pastor, R-Livonia, is term-limited for the seat.

Walsh, a Republican and an attorney, is executive director of development and governmental relations at Schoolcraft College, a post he's held since 2001. The job covers relations with various government agencies, administration of the college's foundation, and operation of the VisTaTech Center and Culinary Arts Program.

Those experiences, plus serving as a principal in a law firm and other elected and appointed positions, provide a unique background for the job, he said.

"I've had a long, long interest in public service and in particular in going to the Legislature," Walsh said.

Walsh believes his personality will bring lawmakers come together. "The continued partisanship and fighting is getting us nowhere," he said.

Walsh said his interest in serving in Lansing goes back to the fall of 1979, when he served as a Livonia Public Schools high school intern in then-Rep. Jack Kirksey's office. "It started there and I have an opportunity to return to it. I'm looking forward to it," he said.

He hopes to focus on bringing more efficiencies in how the state does business; lowering taxes and improving the business environment; and tackling higher education policy by better tracking of college students and alignment of education with jobs. "We can graduate the best students in the world, but if the jobs don't exist here, they're going to leave here," Walsh said.

Supporters include now-Mayor Kirksey, Attorney General Mike Cox, County Commissioner Laura Cox, Councilman Jim McCann, Councilwoman Terry Godfroid-Marecki and Councilman Brian Meakin (campaign chairman), among others.

Walsh served on the Plymouth Road Development Authority; the Livonia Chamber of Commerce board of directors; was one of the founders and board member of the Livonia Economic Development Partnership; and an elected member of the Schoolcraft College Board of Trustees.

Walsh plans to continue both serving on the Planning Commission and continuing his job at Schoolcraft as long as is practical. Much of it "depends on the intensity of the campaign," he said.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

So Livonia didn't have a full time city attorney while Kirksey was mayor? For how many years?

I'm thinking that Sean's assistants picked up the slack?

Former judge isn't endorsing

I recently read your article titled "McLean, Kavanagh to run for Livonia judge post." In this article it recites that I, Judge James R. McCann, former Judge of the 16th District Court, am supporting John McLean.

I believe that Sean Kavanagh and John McLean are both vastly experienced attorneys who have the qualities and attributes necessary to become Judge of the 16th District Court. Sean and John each have acted as my court officer and research clerk. They have demonstrated great knowledge and ability when practicing before me. I wish them the best in their efforts to be elected Judge of the 16th District Court.

I believe that it is very important for the voters of the City of Livonia to take their time to educate themselves on all candidates running for the office of judge.

I am grateful for the years that I spent as judge of the 16th District Court. My daughter, Kathleen McCann, succeeded me as judge of the 16th District Court and will work with whoever is elected in November of 2008.

I wish to state that I will not be publicly endorsing either candidate for that position.

James R. McCann

judge emeritus, 16th District Court
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.
