http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...305/1199/NEWS10 Letters to the editor Stand up for what's right This is in response to the article in the Livonia Observer on Thursday, Jan. 10, regarding the response from LPS lawyers on the whistleblower lawsuit from the former controller. Too many people who may know Margaret Flower know that she is not the type of person the LPS lawyers would like the public to believe. According to those she has challenged she should be wearing a black pointed hat and riding a broom. This is far from reality and as usual the lawyers for the defense have taken the tactic of painting the victim as the one who is on trial here É The defendants made it happen and are now defending their actions by making her the victim. What is really on trial here comes down to the very basic question of who is ultimately responsible for the management and oversight of the money that the taxpayers of our school district have elected to represent, the Livonia Board of Education. It is unfortunate that these elections have continuously been controlled by special interests for the benefit of the few, and at the expense of our students. It now appears that any LPS employee who questions anything may suffer from the repercussions of their superiors, regardless if what they are doing is proper, follows every policy and procedure, and has been taken to every avenue exhaustible to ensure that the right thing for the children is being done. Shame on them for doing what is right, and now they must pay the price. Lord help the rest of the employees who want to do what is right, but are seeing this as an example of how they will be treated. Is this what the LPS leadership and BOE intends to do, make examples of anybody who questions anything? It sets a tone for a hostile working environment and one not too many honest, hardworking, loyal employees will choose to remain in. I would hope that every employee of LPS that knows Margaret Flower, or knows anything about any impropriety within the district, would stand up for what is right. Brad Wolkan Livonia What's the world coming to? Shortly after returning from a trip to do volunteer work before Christmas, the sign we put on our front lawn saying only "Peace" and the magnetic ribbon on my vehicle saying "Support the Troops - Oppose War" both disappeared. We found out that this was not an isolated incident, as several of our friends reported their signs promoting peace were also stolen about the same time. Although the theft is petty, I find it deeply disturbing that someone would steal signs promoting peace just before Christmas. What is our world coming to? Richard Abdoo Livonia Bring back stop sign I am writing to you regarding an important safety issue. I am a sophomore at Livonia Stevenson High School. Children need to go to school in a safe, comfortable environment, and I believe that this is not the case for children at Hoover Elementary. It is very important that the stop sign at the crosswalk on Levan Road be returned. I do not believe the yield sign is safe enough to protect the children that walk to school. My 9-year-old cousin is a student at Hoover, and walks to school. I would like her to be safe. Students' safety is more important than drivers saving a few seconds of their time. Although the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, I have seen cars drive much faster than that. Further, I do not believe the volume of traffic is so great that a stop sign would impede traffic flow to any great degree. If "children are our future," we need to protect their future. Emily Korpela Livonia Forget SMART, Livonia's fine I am writing in regards to the letter by Beth Porter of Livonia. Think about this. How many residents of Livonia need SMART? We as Livonia residents, voted it OUT. Seniors, yes, and we, take care of them, with OUR transit system, that WE gladly support. She talks about the people of Detroit É we don't live there, pay taxes there, vote for their mayor, etc. We live in Livonia, we pay taxes in Livonia, we shop in Livonia. It is NOT up to Livonia to make sure that people from Detroit can get to Livonia. Does Detroit make sure that we can get there? She also said that it is a "waste of gas" for her dad to drive to Detroit! We may not like it, but we all pay for gas, etc., where we work, shop, etc. Everything is going up, we don't like it, but we deal with it and don't expect someone else to pay for it! And yes, we employ "people from Detroit," as stated by Beth Porter. But it is NOT our responsibility to get these people to work or anyone to work. "Livonia will have to hire more people" É Maybe people that will come to work and be grateful to have a job. And lastly, Livonia, does care for our city, big time. We have lived in Livonia for over 30 years É We LOVE Livonia, and everything about this beautiful city. I would recommend Livonia to anyone and everyone that we know. Linda Kabala Livonia |
