I am still on the fence on this thing, so I am looking for substantive discussion and points of view. What do people feel are the major issues in this campaign? Where do you feel the candidates stand on those issues? Is this campaign about voting against someone - or voting for someone (I could be wrong, but much of the rhetoric suggests the latter)? Overall, I don't think anyone should vote for someone based on ad populum reasoning (because eveyone says something is true). No offense to Mrs. Brosnan, but her website offers little details about what she plans to do. That is not necessarily a deal breaker, but I haven't seen her platform listed anywhere. I may have missed it (Like most of us, I've been very busy). I have seen some of the things that Kirksey is offering. He has some interesting ideas. Any thoughts would be appreciated? |

Most of what I think you want to hear has been stated at the various Forums (League of Women Voters, Chamber, etc.) although I don't think that any of those are available as video streams. I think they may be available on Bright House as an 'On Demand' program. You can start with this: Maureen gives a speech at her Ladies of Livonia Brunch on July 29, 2007. I'll continue to post more as time allows. |

Thank you and with much appreciation -- but she did not say anything about what she plans to do as mayor. However, she is an excellent speaker and her speech was well written. I just wish there were more details about her plans for the future. |

In my mind, this is about taking back our city. We have no checks and balances. We have a group of politicians here that have been running the show for a very long time. They seem to all be connected to Mr. Kirksey. They were endorsed by him, he helped them get elected and they all seem to march to the same drummer. When you look at his web site, check the endorsements. Now you may think that having almost all of the elected officials in Livonia listed endorsing one candidate is a good thing, but I do not. We do not want everyone to think alike and to be beholden to any one person. That lack of checks and balances also shuts out the public. Deals are made behind closed doors and then that same block of people just push things through. A perfect recent example was the last minute change in the hours of the Taco Bell that was pushed through by that same group AFTER the community thought everything had been settled. It was OBVIOUS that a group had already discussed the issue prior to the meeting and agreed to just move it through without even giving the residents a chance to comment. We see the same thing but worse week after week on the school board, and all but one have ties to Kirksey. Making all the deals and decisions behind the scenes/off camera needs to stop. I believe that diversity of thought is a good thing. I want elected officals that really listen to the people of Livonia and not just those that are their "friends." I want to see real discussion of the issues rather than a show. I want to see planning for the future rather than just taking things one at a time. In my opinion, the more incumbants we can toss out, the better, and we sure don't need to go back to having Kirksey in the mayor's office running the kingdom. Kirksey has taken just about every one of her ideas and has put a tiny bit more detail behind it and posted on his web site. I am not impressed by that. The only original idea I have heard is the wireless concept, which everyone I talk to that knows anything about this stuff tells me sounds much better than it really is. Many others have tried and failed to relly pull it off due to technology limits and security concerns. Maureen Brosnan does have some great ideas. She wants to put together a group of residents to create a plan for Livonia's future, prioritizing issues and ideas with the input and participation of the residents. She has targeted areas, such as the NE, for revitalization. She has idea for helping fill buildings and move real estate. And she has not slung a single bit of mud throughout the campaign, while her opponent continues to send out attack mailers full of lies. To me the choice is quite clear. |

I agree with much of what you said, Vanna. I would say that both candidates are insiders though - both with many political connections in and out of the city. I agree with you about the slinging of mud too. I don't think that is a good way to get elected (regardless of how effective a strategy it is). Attacking party affiliation or wise cracks about someone's age demean the process of choosing leaders. It should be about legitimate issues. Thanks for the input Vanna.

Sometimes on here you read a post that just seems perfect. I must say this is one of those. No nastyness, no name calling. Thank you Vanna. |

Absolutely!! Balance and moderation are the keys to life. Brosnan has in no way shown that she will be influenced from outside sources. She grew up here, and understands all of our citizens. Not just special interest groups. I love her city wide open house idea, and I really liked her grasp of the wireless internet issue. She was very up to date on what is an outdated systems, and what system would be best for the future. There just comes a time to let your children grow up. Livonias children are ready, willing, and able to take on the responsibilities of our city .

This question is not to start a fight, it's legitimate question that I'm looking for the answer to. Is anyone bothered that Maureen sends her children to private schools and that she herself is the product of a private school? I couldn't care less, but from the threads I have read it seems like a lot of the people on here are very pro-public school. |

Not just Pro-public school, but Pro-school of chioce would be more like it. It does not bother me if you do as you choose to educate your child, the fact that many here are pro-public school is out of concern for what has occurred in OUR schools in the last 12 years, and what has more recently been occurring in the eroding of the public trust of the school board and central office administration. We ALL want what is best for all of the students attending OUR public schools, and we have not seen that happeneing for a looooooooong time. mmmmkay? |

Nope, not bothered a bit by it. She grew up in Livonia (so did I), she lives in Livonia, and she wants only what is best for Livonia. She has no hidden agenda and I like that. Actually, she's one of the lucky one's that doesn't have to deal with the LI and now this horrible math program called EM. So, I guess what you perceive as a negative to try to make her look bad is not that at all. If we had the $$, our kid's would be there, too! |

What side of the bed does she sleep on? What grocery store does she shop at? Who cares? It was brought out that the School Sup's eldest went to a private school... Does that bother you? |

Did you read my post? How did I try to perceive it as negative? I said I couldn't care less, I was wondering if anyone did. |

Nope, not gonna bite. Ok just a little nibble. I know there are many here that would love to have their children in private schools, but the funds are just not there. The BOE, anyone connected with the Demographic Committee and those that supported the LI did a disservice to a majority of parents (with children) in this school system. If a person's name was on the Demographic Committee and they did not come out stating they did not agree with the upheaval or our district...they're off my Christmas card list. If you want I can list the DC members.I apologize for this response because I don't like when conversations jump tracks and here I am, not sticking to the Topic title. |

You're good. The topic is Questions and Issues, I think this falls under the issues part. I like the nibble comment. That made me laugh :-) |

But yet you still try to make it a divisive issue on the forum? It is apparent you have a mission to fulfill. |
