Detroit News covers Maureen Brosnan's condemnation of negative advertising. Brosnan had a press conference with former Mayor Bob Bennett, Planning Commissioners Lee Morrow and Bill LaPine, Councilmen Joe Taylor and Joe Laura, along with several community representatives. The press conference was at the Livonia City Hall. Livonia mayoral candidate condemns attack ads Christine Ferretti / The Detroit News LIVONIA -- Mayoral candidate Maureen Miller Brosnan and a group of supporters gathered outside City Hall today to condemn negative literature circulating about candidates in the final days before the election. In a brief press conference, taped to be aired on Brosnan's campaign Web site and YouTube.com, Brosnan said the "mudslinging" takes away from the most important focus: Livonia's future. "They are not talking about issues that are key," she said. "This is characteristic of what's not important." Advertisement The informal gathering was spurred by funding of more than $30,000 by the Wayne 11th Republican Congressional District for what Brosnan called negative mailers and cable television attacks against her family and religious beliefs. She also took aim at a second group, the Citizens for a Better Tomorrow, that has disseminated hurtful information about City Council candidate Laura Toy. "This campaign is not about old school politicking. It's about our families and our future," she said. "Livonia deserves better than this." Following Brosnan's speech, former Livonia Mayor Bob Bennett said he's never seen this type of negative literature go out in the city. "I have never seen stuff at this level," he said. "It makes me ashamed." |

I know former Mayor Bob Bennett may feel ashamed, but I feel insulted as an educated voter and a constituent of the Livonia District. My vote is becoming predicated upon the actions of those who choose to rely on tactics such as this. |

Since Blue Skies is opposed to negative campaigning, I have some questions.....I received an anonymous mailing it seems like forever ago with the following articles: The Community Crier - April 5, 2000: Foundation bylaws show 'forgery' Letter from the Attorney General dated May 15,2000 re: Plymouth Community Foundation and Century Society of Plymouth, Inc. The Community Crier - March 22, 2000 - Plymouth Foundation board ponders future City of Plymouth, City Commission Meeting, February 20, 2001 If you don't remember them, I am happy to scan them in to refresh your memory. You obviously ticked off some people in Plymouth. What is that all about? |

If I had a response to everything that people said about me then I'd be busy all day responding to things. I think part of the great thing here is we control what we can control. That's my attitude and my work ethic and my preparation for life. I posted an article from the Detroit News and without a sense of discussing anything of value there is a tendency to resort to personality. One of the reasons good people move away from politics, don't vote or are turned off. As I have stated many times and if you look at my postings they have all been positive. Just like my attitude. I happen to like the good work that Jack Kirksey has done over the years in Livonia. I happen to think that Maureen has done good work over the years in Livonia. We are fortunate to have two quality candidates running. But I happen to think that it is time for a fresh approach. View that as you will. I sleep well at night. |

I am happy to see positives expressed and shared. What concerns me most is the negativity of the few, and the damage it can cause Renee |

Oh please. This is a campaign about Livonia. Why do people infer that those who stand tall and offer suggestions and ideas have an agenda and that the only way to discuss issues is by turning them into personalities. The Sophists did that and thus the concept of sophmoric arguements. Arguements that never go beyond the second year of logic. Those philosophers developed the reputation of being lazy in their thinking. I make no pretense that my logic is right only that it is a thread for a positive discussion on real issues. The winner will not be announced onTuesday night. The winner will be announced in 12 months if the person gathering the most votes next week actually can put together a plan and start the implementation of work that needs to be done in Livonia. I voted absentee so my mind is made up. On who to vote for. My mind is not made up on the future of Livonia. That is the real reason we have elections. For the good of the community not the person being elected. I am leaving in the morning to be with a friend in his last days. During the 10 hour drive I will guarantee that my thoughts will not once be on the campaign in Livonia or across the nation. I will enjoy looking at the sky, the clouds, the trees. There is more to life than saying "I won. You lost." In a perfect world we would all sit down the day after an election and plot how to make the hometown a better place. Then it would be "We won." |

Following Brosnan's speech, former Livonia Mayor Bob Bennett said he's never seen this type of negative literature go out in the city. "I have never seen stuff at this level," he said. "It makes me ashamed." I find this statement by Bennett to be fairly humorous since my very first recollection of public mud slinging in this mayoral race is the editorial he wrote to the OE before the primary <_< |

Actually, the letter writing to the Observer started long before that. You can see that on Jack Kirkseys own website... http://www.jackkirksey.com/media/editorials.html |

Hmmmm.... I don't see anything there that I would call pre-primary mud slinging. I still think Bennett cast the first stone. |

Does that surprise you? Why would he include mud slinging letters on his website? |

The reality of Mrs. Brosnan's press conference is she really has no other choice. I haven't heard her offer any tangible platform. She is able to ignore any mudslinging that has been directed toward Mr. Kirksey since they have been anonymous. Pretending she has no knowledge of anyone sending out stuff on her behalf, could easily come back to bite her. Although it was a savvy move to speak out against it. It will make it very easy to tsk tsk anything negative that is to come that could benefit her. Information pieces directed toward discrediting Mrs. Brosnan have been properly labeled by the authors. She also conveniently can do this and claim it is not all about her since there was once sent out about Laura Toy as well. I don't know why everyone is acting like this is new and shocking behavior. Doesn't anyone remember the horrible TV ads that slammed both Laura Toy and Brian Duggan last year? I'm not saying I think it's proper or acceptable, I'm just giving you my thoughts and observations about it. |

I remember the anti-Toy ad...I think it is the one you are talking about. It focused on her bad voting record. I personally do not consider that to be a "slam," unless there was more to it that I don't remember. One's attendance at votes is an issue that is appropriate for the election. The inappropriate mailers contain nasty stuff that is either not relavent to the office, is a personal attack or is blatently untrue. It is wrong no matter which group or individual sends it out. Ms. Brosnan has not engaged in this kind of dirty politics and I commend her for her integrity. |

I love how it is 'mud-slinging' when it directed towards kirksey and it is an 'informational piece' when directed toward Maureen You have quite a way with words 134! But most see through that kind of writing. Call it what it is, nasty, ugly, mud-slinging.You act like it's ok just because someone, Wayne 11, signs their name to that trash??? So what? Does that make it ok? NO! So why don't you just admit that Jack-o has gone overboard on the 'informational pieces' against Maureen. The tally I've come up with so far is: anti-jack mailer-1--sent by? anti-Maureen mailer-4--sent by Wayne 11, a group that Jack is affiliated with and contributes to. |
