While driving past Holmes about an hour ago, there were 2 firetrucks and an ambulance, the kids were outside (unfortunately in the rain). Anyone hear anything?
I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

An Email sent to parents:

Good afternoon,

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of a few events at Holmes.

1. Due to the weather, football and cross country has been canceled for this afternoon.

2. We are expecting over 6oo students this evening for our activity night. Please be patient with drop off and pick up and try to car pool if possible. This will help tremendously with traffic.

3. This morning our fire alarms went off at 9:56 due to a heat sensor that was activated in the kitchen area. Livonia Fire Department arrived within minutes and gave us the all clear at 10:12 to enter the building. Safety was our number one priority. I felt bad because students and staff were wet and cold as a result of the miserable weather. The heat was immediately turned on in the building and we all tried to make the best of the situation.

Thanks for your continued support.

What would you have done if you had been in charge?

Maybe calls to parents to bring dry clothes for those students who were very uncomfortable. I understand a few girls who were wearing white shirts had to wear sweatshirts all day because you could see their underclothing. Standing in rain for over 10 minutes can get you pretty soaked. But maybe some parents were called? I hope we dont get that kind of downpour tonight when the kids have their costumes on for Activity Night.

Some kids asked to go home because they were soaked. My child was very uncomfortable all day too.

Mine was soaked too when she got home, and none too happy that she spent 30 minutes straightening her hair this morning for tonight's activity night. I fully expect a cold from this. It didn't occur to me when I got the email blast to bring up new clothes.

At least we got an email explaining what had happened. I do think that Mr. Stromberg the principle at Holmes does a good job communicating to parents when something happens there. I may not always agree 100% with how things are handled, but at least I am informed. That isnt the case with some of the other schools. I do think some sort of plan should be in place if the kids need to stand in the rain again for 10 minutes. Can they call home and have dry clothes brought in? From what I heard that was discouraged today. But I may be wrong.

I would think it would have been discouraged because if you had 700-900 kids calling home for clothes it would be a logistical nightmare and would take till the end of the day to make the phone calls. I agree that Mr. Stromberg does a good job communicating and was happy to get the e-blast, I just didn't take it to the next level and consider how wet the kids would have been. I would think this was a rare occurance and am not going to complain. If we can come up with a better to way to handle in the future, I am all for recommending it.

Perhaps that they might allow them to use their cell phones. If a child came up to me and asked for dry clothes I would definitely allow them to phone home and I would expect the same for my own children. It is neglectful to not allow it.

I can imagine the nightmare though, for sure. :)

Doesn't sound too healthy for the skin, either, with all the concern about MRSA....(I know, you're probably sick of hearing about it (MRSA). Sorry, but that's the first think I thought of. That & colds.....)
