Playoff fever hits grid fans By BRAD EMONS Staff Writer Prior to this weekend, it was assured two Livonia Public high schools Ð 9-0 Stevenson and 7-2 Churchill Ð were headed to the state football playoffs. By early Sunday evening, another LPS school Ð 5-4 Franklin Ð qualified for the 256-school field as an at-large. Make that a Livonia hat trick, a first in the district's history. The Patriots, who defeated host Churchill on Friday night in the regular season finale, 7-0, were one of two Class A-size schools, along with Taylor Truman, to gain an at-large playoff bid with a 5-4 record. The field had already been filled with 251 automatic qualifiers with either 6-3 or 5-3 (based on an eight-game season) records, leaving five at-large spots open for Classes A through D. When the pairings were announced early Sunday evening on FoxSportsNet Detroit, cheers of joy could already be heard from the vicinity of 31000 Joy Road. "I had a really good idea, but I got antsy because we were the last ones to be announced,'' Franklin coach Chris Kelbert said. "They (the players) went crazy.'' In Division 1-Region 4 matchups this Friday night, Stevenson hosts 6-3 Plymouth; Churchill travels to 8-1 Novi; and Franklin goes on the road to take on top seed 8-1 Monroe, which is coached by former Livonia Clarenceville coach Greg Hudkins, who guided the Trojans to five straight state playoff berths including the 2001 Division 5 state final. The last time three teams made the state playoffs from the City of Livonia was 2004 (Churchill, Stevenson and Clarenceville). Franklin and Churchill are making their third postseason appearances in the playoffs, while Stevenson is making its 10th in school history. http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...EWS10/710250589 |

Thats awesome! Three teams made it! Only could have been better if the Trojans did too. Congrats to all, but there is much work to do! I want to be at Ford Field! Those games are so much fun to watch, not to mention the thrill for the kids to be on live TV! Final games will be played at Ford Field in Detroit according to the following schedule: Nov. 23 — Division 8, 10 a.m.; Division 2, 1 p.m.; Division 6, 4:30 p.m.; and Division 4, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24 — Division 7, 10 a.m.; Division 1, 1 p.m.; Division 5, 4:30 p.m.; and Division 3, 7:30 p.m. |

If you can't make the Stevenson game, I have noticed that Plymouth broadcasts most of their games on the High School radio station. It's pretty silly, but really fun to listen to if it is on  . Try it.... WSDP 88.1 FM And maybe Novi will have a webcast of the Churchill game, I am not sure...... http://www.wovi.org/ |

Monroe falls in double OT story updated October 26. 2007 10:45PM Monroe's terrific football season came to a frustrating close Friday night as the Trojans fell 39-38 in double overtime to Livonia Franklin in the opening round of the Division 1 state playoffs. The Trojans could have sent the game into a third overtime, but a botched snap on an extra point forced them to scramble and a desperation pass fell incomplete. Monroe seemed to be in control of the game, taking a 15-0 lead on an 80-yard run by Brandyn Harris late in the first half and a 41-yard run by Jessie Johnson early in the third quarter. But then Franklin fullback David Fortin took charge of the game running for 183 of his 254 yards in the second half and overtime. The Patriots grabbed an 18-15 lead with 4:34 remaining, but Monroe drove to knot the score on Fred Nielsen's 19-yard field goal with 1:31 left. Franklin seemed to have won the game as Fortin broke loose for a 67-yard TD run with 1:12 remaining, but Monroe came right back to tie it again with a beautiful 47-yard drive. Jon Carrabino put the Trojans in good position with a 43-yard kick-off return to the Franklin 47. Then, Johnson ran 22 yards and Alex Russo caught a 25-yard TD pass from Willie Johnson. Nielsen's extra point tied it at 25-25 and sent the game into overtime. Both teams had a touchdown and an extra point in the first overtime. Monroe's score came on a 10-yard pass from Willie Johnson to Harris. Franklin went first in the second overtime and scored on a 4-yard run by Fortin. The Patriots added the extra point, putting the pressure back on Monroe. Willie Johnson scored on a 5-yard run, but the botched extra point ended the game. Monroe finished at 8-2.
