http://www.hometownlife.com/apps/pbcs.dll/...574/1199/NEWS10 Ignore last-minute campaign attacks At least twice so far this year, this newspaper has encouraged election campaign operatives to take the high road when it comes to mailers and fliers they distribute to the community. Such pleas seem to be falling on deaf ears. So instead of talking to the politicians, we'll try to focus on the voters. We suggest voters make it a point to ignore these attack fliers mailed to their house or dropped at their door in the last week before an election. Throw them in the garbage; don't read them and they can't have an impact. The problem is, candidates tend to focus on where they stand on issues and their plans or goals early in the campaign. As election day gets closer, it may seem easier or more effective to assault the opponent with half-truths and suggestions about their allies, their partisanship or their supposed role in something controversial. Livonia has a long history of campaign trash talking, often sent out the weekend before an election and often without a required paid-for-by disclaimer or a fictitious disclaimer. The races for mayor, council and treasurer are nonpartisan. The candidates are not running as Republican or Democratic candidates. However, that isn't stopping partisanship from rearing it's ugly head again. This election, the Republican party struck first with a mailer. That doesn't bode well for those of us who'd prefer to see the candidates stick to telling us the important reasons they should be elected to serve our community, rather than the reasons their opponent shouldn't be elected. When the political parties get involved, attack mailers compound in number and in the level of malice. And it happens whether or not the candidates disavow those mailers. Candidates should take the high road in the next couple of weeks before the Nov. 6 election. But if they don't, we have a recommendation: Voters should realize that these last-minute assaults are only effective if read and allowed to poison their viewpoint. Know that such efforts are usually based in desperation and usually nowhere near the same ZIP code as the truth. So forget about them. mmmmkay? |

Ashamed by political mailing I'm so ashamed! I have lived in Livonia since 1955. I have been a conservative Republican most of my life. I have been very active in Livonia politics since 1962. Some Livonia elections have been fierce but always non-partisan. Until now. I'm so ashamed. I just received a mailing from the Republican party that viciously attacks mayoral candidate Maureen Brosnan; candidate for treasurer, Brian Duggan (my son); and Eric Stempien who is running for a seat on the council as "tax and spend" Democrats. The piece accuses the Democrats of raising your taxes but does not mention that it was two Republicans that made the tax increase possible. The other mayoral candidate and his slate must really be desperate to allow a mailing this despicably so full of blatant lies and twisted half-truths. They say Brian was late paying taxes 15 times. Absolutely untrue and they know it. They say Brian is part of the Brosnan tax and spend team. He is not. He is running independently of any candidate (although, now, I sure will vote for Maureen Brosnan and Eric Stempien). Brian has said he would run a clean campaign and he has absolutely forbid me from disclosing anything negative about his opponent for treasurer. I wonder what other last-minute dirt will be forthcoming from those morally vacuous wanna-bes. James F. Duggan Livonia |
