Here are best choices for four area mayors
October 22, 2007

Voters in four Detroit suburbs will vote Nov. 6 in mayoral elections.

Here are the Free Press' choices in Warren, Rochester Hills, Livonia and Westland:

• Warren: Council President Jim Fouts has run a surprisingly effective campaign and could pull out an upset victory. Even so, City Clerk RICHARD SULAKA, 52, remains the strongest candidate to replace term-limited Mark Steenbergh as mayor of Michigan's third-largest city.

Sulaka is a proven administrator and has the temperament, experience and pragmatism to make a solid mayor in these difficult times for Michigan cities.

• Rochester Hills: Mayoral challenger ERIK AMBROZAITIS, 40, will have to pull off a small miracle to beat incumbent Mayor Bryan Barnett, 32. But it's not out of the realm of possibility, given the come-from-behind victory Ambrozaitis pulled off two years ago to win a highly contested City Council seat. A number of his ideas, such as creating shared service agreements between the city and county as well as consolidating public safety taxes, continue to make him worth voters' support.

• Livonia: A former councilwoman, Maureen Miller Brosnan, 44, and a former mayor, Jack Kirksey, 78, square off. The two survived a three-way primary to succeed outgoing Mayor Jack Engebretson, with Brosnan slightly ahead, so this could be a tight race. MAUREEN MILLER BROSNAN continues to stand out with her potential for dynamic leadership.

• Westland: Experience vies with experience as incumbent Mayor William Wild, 39, faces Charles Pickering, 64, a former mayor and current council president. The City Council elevated Wild, who was then council president, to the job when Mayor Sandra Cicirelli was elected a district judge. This election will give the voters' stamp of approval until the next regularly scheduled mayoral election in 2009. Both men have the experience to provide capable leadership. But WILLIAM WILD, who had a commanding edge in the primary, deserves the opportunity to proceed with accountability measures he has instituted.
