http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/artic...33/1410/METRO01 Monday, October 22, 2007 Livonia financing disputed Candidates for mayor squabble over partisan campaign donations. Christine Ferretti / The Detroit News LIVONIA -- Quiet for months, the city's mayoral campaign took a sharp detour from civility last week when former Mayor Jack Kirksey accused opponent Maureen Miller Brosnan of being a puppet for state Democrats. Kirksey, 78, who left in 2003 because of term limits, released Brosnan's campaign records, which show Gov. Jennifer Granholm contributed $10,000 and Wayne County employees and vendors kicked in $17,000. The Nov. 6 race to lead the city of 100,000 residents is supposed to be nonpartisan, but Kirksey is a registered Republican and Brosnan describes herself as independent. Advertisement "She will not be an independent mayor. Someone else will be steering the ship in Livonia," said Kirksey. "It is saying loudly and clearly…the money is coming from people she's beholden to when, and if, she's elected mayor." Brosnan, 44, is considered by some a front-runner in the campaign because she led all candidates in balloting during the August primary. Records indicate she raised nearly $69,170 through Aug. 31, compared with $77,695 for Kirksey. "This is the old-school way of politicking. This is the type of thing you'd hear from someone who was not first in the primary," Brosnan said. "This race is important to the city of Livonia." Kirksey said he is accepting money mostly from Livonia residents, businesses and state leaders who are residents. A political action committee for Attorney General Mike Cox, who lives in the city, contributed $4,500 to the campaign. Livonia Councilman Joe Taylor, who is treasurer for Brosnan's campaign, said her donations reflect her influence throughout the county. Wayne County officials, including Commission Chairwoman Jewel Ware and Cindy Dingell, an aide to county Executive Robert Ficano, are among the donors. The county government is one of the most heavily Democratic in the nation. "If we needed something, we could certainly have a line going there," Taylor said. Taylor said the political attack is because of Brosnan's growing support, including local police and fire officials and a local newspaper. "Things have changed now and that puts pressure on the other candidate, who thinks 'I'm going to have to fight a little harder,' " he said. Kay Beard, a Westland Democrat and one of several Wayne County commissioners to endorse Brosnan's campaign, said claims that Brosnan will call upon others to make her decisions is "ludicrous." "Everybody who runs for office wants to have people working with them and helping in their campaigns; that doesn't mean…she can't make decisions on what to do on certain issues," she said. "That's so far from the actual things she's been doing." But Livonia resident Melanie Ricketts, 48, was glad the information about Brosnan got out. "Most of her money has been raised outside the city and through Wayne County officials…she's going to have to pay back favors at some point," Ricketts said. "Jack has experience being mayor and Maureen doesn't. She'll rely on what other people outside Livonia tell her to do. You have to look at where her money is coming from." You can reach Christine Ferretti at (734) 462-2289 or cferretti@detnews.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Instead of concentrating on campaigning he is concentratiing on slamming his opponent. Is this a sign of desperation? It appears to be. mmmmkay? |

They are whinning about the 10K from the gov., but the nearly 5K from AG Cox is what, peanuts? They are politicians-every politician is beholden to someone. Can't Ricketts, et al they come up with something else? They've been whinning about the 10K for weeks now. |

The truth hurts. I find it fascinating that Maureen describes herself as "independent." Check the State of Michigan website --- she is a Democrat. What a LIar. What will she LIe about next?????? She is just in plain denial that this isn't a partisian race. Face the truth Maureen. Why isn't her resume the same on her website as it is on the State of Michigan website? Executive Vice President? That company tanked and was dissolved by the State of Michigan. Now there is leadership skills. |

Renee's post carries a very similar flavor and attitude as Kirksey does in the newspaper article. Much of the same "desperate to grasp at anything" tone. |

Why did the Detroit News interview or take a statement from a known Kirksey nasty zealot and school district employee who owes her job to the LI and Kirksey? Gee, would I have a biased attitude also if I were her? Naaaahhhhh

Yeah, of all the citizens in this entire city they found her to interview, eh? Or, maybe Christine was "helped" out a little with the article, eh? Brosnan is a Democrat, with ties to Democrats, running for a "non-partisan" office. Kirksey is a Republican, with ties to Republicans, running for a "non-partisan" office. Duh! Renee, if this is the best you've got then that's almost reason enough in itself for me not to vote for him. |

Has anyone heard of the phone survey being conducted over the past week? Apparantly, along with people being asked for whom they will be voting, they are also asked if they are aware that Brosnan was an opponant of the LI. Are we confusing issues again? First they attack Maureen for being a democrat in a non-partisan race. Then they attack Maureen for taking money from known dems. Now they're bringing the school issues into the mayoral campaign. Hey, Jack, for the record, Maureen took NO position on the LI and the schools and the city are two completely separate entities. Unlike Jack, Maureen had no involvement in any of the LI issues. Why would they be bringing this up? Maybe because the "survey" seems to be targeted at LPS employee/retirees? Does anyone have any details on this? |

I don't know about the LI question, since I hung up on the "survey interviewer" when it was obvious from the leading questions such as (I'm paraphrasing here) "If you knew that Brosnan was taking money from Granholm, who has close ties to Kwamee Kilpatrick, who is actively trying to steal 2,000 Quicken jobs from Livonia, would you be more or less likely to vote for her?" that this so called survey is only a fishing expedition for campaign talking points. Talk about a twisted, tangled conspiracy theory way of attacking Brosnan. What's next, will the Kirksey campaign try to label her a terrorist? |

Can't resist Renee---If this race is partisan it is because Kirksey has made it so, he never misses an opportunity to identify Maureen's Dem. supporters. Take a look at HIS endorsement list...it is a Who's Who in the Republican Party. Then take a closer look and see how many of them are NOT Livonia residents. Now let's talk about business acumen...Who do you suppose was in "leadership" roles at the Chamber of Commerce during the period when that orginization got itself into financial difficulty and had to sell its building and get $$$ help from the City???? NONE OTHER THAN CANDIDATE KIRKSEY AND HIS BUDDY JOHN WALSH!!! |

Who are the ones who keep bringing partisan politics into it??? The Kirksey camp, that's who. They want to keep drilling it into our heads that Maureen is a democrat because he knows that Livonia is a heavily republican city. Why can't he just stick to the issues? Maureen's party affiliation (or Jack's, for that matter), is completely irrelevent. |

I have not recieved this phone call, but it sure does remind me of the recall election, LIES LIES LIES. Maybe it's the only way Kirksy thinks he can win, since it worked for the recall. <_< To me, it just proves him a LIar and makes him look that more desperate. |

REB84, if it wasn't messing with the future of our city, it would be funny. How insulting for them to even insinuate that Maureen is encouraging or somehow behind the Quicken situation. But you know the drill, I'm sure -- if you feel yourself losing ground, just start slinging mud as fast and as hard as you can. Distract those pesky voters from the real issues on the table. |

I received a telephone survey regarding Kirksey v Brosnan. They asked me several different questions regarding each candidate, but none of them mentioned the LI. The questions referred to both candidates political affiliations, Both candidate's experience (or lack of,) Jack's age and health, Maureen's $10K from Jennifer Granholm. |

Olives, it sounds like you had the same survey that I did. If you hadn't hung up on him, you would have heard they asked about many of the same things regarding Kirksey that are often discussed on this board. |
