This is the first meeting regarding the finances for the 06/07 school year. Please take the time to attend or at least watch on TV. Why is Fred Haller handling the LPS account again? Is this the meeting at which we will hear about exactly what Plante & Moran has been doing inside Central Office for the last few months helping to fix the financial nightmare Lisa created? Aren't they supposed to report all of the things they fixed for Lisa in preparation for the Audit? Doesn't the BOE want to know everything that was found to be in question, and subsequently changed after the findings, and before the financial audit reporting that will be presented to them? How much has P & M been paid over the last few months? How much was budgeted for them to be doing this work before the audit? How much was budgeted for them to do the audit? How much was spent on P & M during this whole "Before & After " process? Do we get to hear how much was corrected or altered to meet the requirements to enable Lisa to pass the audit? Do we really know how much the auditors again negotiated with Lisa to fix the books so everything looks legal and ethical? How many times has this been done in the past? What do we really know when we have had the same accounting firm in fixing the finances every year, and then collaborating with Lisa to cover any inconsistencies or fund imbalances, and then actually reporting on an audit that they themselves have doctored to meet any reporting requirements? I don't get it, why do the BOE members put themselves on the edge of legal action for not doing their jobs? They are ultimately the ones who are going to be held responsible in a court of law. I would be making sure I covered my butt big time before I approved anything financial at this time if I was on the BOE. |

It is my understanding that auditors should be reporting to the BOE on what they find. Any "fixes" should come later. Are you suggestiong that they are actually doing otherwise? If they work for the BOE, that would be wrong! |

There was no criminal liability, but I believe that they settled a lawsuit filed by their district or BOE for their failure to find the problem. |

EAST DETROIT SCHOOLS' ACCOUNTANTS FAILED TO REPORT EMBEZZLEMENT SCHEME ----------------------------------------------------------------- DETROIT, Mich. — A Grand Rapids-based accounting firm has uncovered prior misconduct by the auditing firm employed by East Detroit Public Schools, giving investigators a clue into the embezzlement scheme that plagued the district in the mid 1990s. The report says that the district's former auditors did not report or refused to report mismanagement and misallocation of district funds when auditing the district. "Plante & Moran, LLP is responsible for allowing the financial losses suffered by the East Detroit Public Schools to continue due to withholding pertinent information from the Board of Education and the public stakeholders," says the report. Several active and former board members are awaiting trial due to their participation in the scheme to embezzle district money. |

Failure to find? I heard they paid off the district (a huge sum of money) to keep them out of it. Same thing I suppose. |
