The finger points at us

The Michigan Open Meetings Act allows public entities to hold closed meetings to discuss pending litigation. All litigants are therefore able to prepare for the court case in privacy. Citizens have the option of witnessing the court proceedings. The citizen's right of redress, in public, was guaranteed originally by the Magna Carta, signed in 1215. Sometimes suits against Livonia are settled prior to beginning the court trial.

Economic reasons are cited. The practice runs the risk that others will file false suits with the belief that the city will settle rather than go to the expense of a trial. The most disturbing cases are those settlements that result in all parties agreeing to refrain from discussing the case details, including the amount of payment. Public funds are being spent without citizen consent.

As recently as Sept. 28, 2007, The Detroit News reported upon the settlement of the case of Crays vs. the City of Livonia. Livonia was sued for allegedly harassing a citizen. It was typical of other cases that did not go to trial but remained "out of public view." The conflict started in 1999 when two neighbors (Barry Crays and Gary Garrison) got into a disagreement.

Gary Garrison is a DPW foreman. Mr. Crays was subsequently cited for violating many petty ordinances. Most were of the type that are regularly overlooked throughout the city. The feud soon grew into a donnybrook involving many city staff members. The result was Crays' suit against Livonia. Because of the covert means used by Livonia's officials, citizens can only guess where the fault lies. The question is why was this relatively simple issue allowed to fester into a suit? How many other plaintiffs were paid off in exchange for silence?

The old saw "People get the type of government they deserve" is still valid in Livonia today. The finger of blame is pointed at us.

Attention taxpayers

Livonia taxpayers need to visit Rotary Park on Six Mile to see their tax dollars at work. Mega dollars are being spent to pave the road around the ball diamonds, expand parking, and replace perfectly good back stops.

These facilities have been fine for years; why the sudden need to change? Our fair city must be flush with excess cash in spite of the fact that businesses are leaving the city and the state has serious budget problems.

This city has great parks, but in these economic times, I question the wisdom of this kind of spending.

Brosnan has vision, attitude

Today's Kiwanis speaker promoted Livonia's marketing video, citing our positives.

One positive is our nonpartisan city elections. A Kiwanis members spoke up saying not to support Maureen Brosnan, as she is a Democrat. I support and endorse Maureen believing that in Livonia, the candidate values and platform, not gender, nor motherhood, nor religion, nor party affiliation, are what matters.

I served on city council with Maureen and attest to her vision, positive attitude and ability to work with all Livonia citizens. Maureen is worthy of your support on Nov. 6.

Kirksey: Best for our city

At this time in our history, Livonia will need a strong, confident mayor, one who will not be afraid to stand up to Wayne county and the powers that be in Lansing. I believe the right man for the job is Jack Kirksey.

It is my understanding that Kirksey's opponent has received $10,000 from Gov. Granholm as well as $1,000 from Wayne County Executive Ficano. In addition, she is receiving strong support from the UAW. This concerns me as it suggests as mayor she may feel beholden to her benefactors when making decisions that would affect Livonia.

The Granholm administration has demonstrated they would rather play partisan politics than do what is best for Michigan. Our state has become a laughing stock because this administration has been economically and financially irresponsible.

If you love Livonia as I do, I urge you to put politics aside. Let your vote reflect your desire to do what is best for our city. Vote for the candidate who has a track record of getting the job done. Join me in voting for Jack Kirksey for mayor of Livonia.

Kirksey has independence, vision

In 1977, as newlyweds, we moved into the city of Livonia. We wanted to raise our children in a safe city with an excellent public school system. We believed that a community is only as good as its ability to keep families safe and educate its kids. The decision was obvious ... Livonia. It has been over 30 years and two moves and Livonia is still our home. Livonia is one of the safest cities in the U.S. to raise a family, the public schools do a great job, and Livonia has the lowest tax rate of any city in Wayne County.

During the past 30 years, Jack Kirksey has played a key role in ensuring that Livonia's tax rate is low and neighborhoods are safe. He is also the best candidate to make sure that the schools and the city work together for us.

I recently read that Jack Kirksey is endorsed by five of seven city council members, six of seven Livonia school board members, and five of seven Clarenceville school board members. Frankly, I like the fact that he has the support of so many local leaders because in these difficult times, we must work together to keep Livonia great. He is also the only candidate with a plan to bring free wireless Internet service to Livonia, which will be good for families, schools and our children.

I have always been an independent voter. I vote for the candidate and the issues that they represent. I do not want outside forces to influence this election or my vote. This year, I am voting for Jack Kirksey for mayor because he has the independence, experience, and vision to keep us on the right track and improve our quality of life.

Toy has integrity, vision

I support Laura Toy for Livonia City Council.

I support her because of her integrity and loyalty to Livonia. She has a clear vision to build Livonia strong and better so that people with children will be happy to make Livonia their home.

Only one this week? . Peggy, none of us like outside influence, but you really enjoyed the MEA help in the BOE election! Poll workers from outside the city, phone banks from all around the area manned by people from all parts of the state.

Frankly Peggy, I DON'T like that he has the support of so many local leaders. To me it looks like he will be doing payback's for a long, long time. Especially the BOE members. Back-scratching at it's finest.
