October 11, from Franklin and Emerson

The following is a message sent to all Franklin High School Parents by Mr. Willenborg this morning:

A student riding their bike to school was taken to the hospital this morning after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Merriman and Joy. He was crossing on the green light and fortunately was back in school by third period.

Our administrative team is visiting each class over the next few days to emphasize to students that they be very careful as they walk or ride to school - especially so during the darkness of the morning hours. We are reminding them to stay on the sidewalks, only cross major roads at cross lights, to walk in a group, and to wear light colored reflective clothing. They should never assume that the oncoming driver can see them crossing. We are also reminding students not to cross through the McKinley parking lot during the beginning of school and end of school time periods.

Emerson included FHS letter(above) and added:

This is a very serious problem for schools. Emerson has been receiving phone calls from concerned drivers both in the morning and after school about our students. Students need to remain on the sidewalks with their bikes and skateboards. Students need to respect the traffic and the traffic lights in all areas, but especially at Middlebelt and West Chicago.

Please do help us review those safety considerations with your children.

Thank you for driving very slowly and carefully around school zones.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be WRONG.

There can't be enough reminders for drivers to slow down. Cars are no match for a pedestrian, on foot, on bicycle, on skateboard.
