-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Save Our Youth Task Force http://saveouryouthtaskforce.com On 9/25/07 we participated in a public event at the Schoolcraft VisTaTech Center called Addiction: A Treatable Illness. Don Allen, the Director of the Michigan Office of Drug Control was one of the speakers. Diane Montes, Jason Schwartz, Mark Menestrina, and Dr. Mike were the other panelists. We estimate that there were 140 attendees. The event was well received; the panelists took questions from the audience. On 9/21/07 SOYTF collaborated with Franklin's SADD chapter to put on a tailgate party before the football game. We cooked up and gave away 250 hotdogs (Thank you Senate Coney Island!) Letters to the editor October 7, 2007 We have power to influence On Sept. 19, Principal Steven Archibald at Stevenson High School notified parents of a problem occurring not only at Stevenson but throughout the community. Fifty-seven percent of the Class of 2007 reported that use of alcohol and drugs was a serious problem among their peers. Incidents this year at all the high schools indicate that the problem has not gone away. I commend Principal Archibald for boldly tackling this unpopular issue. We all need to be reminded of the responsibility and power we have to help young people live alcohol- and drug-free lives. Autumn is a busy time for teens and pressure to fit in with new social groups may cause them to engage in risky behavior they wouldn't normally consider. Never assume that all parents set the same expectations you do - surveys have shown that "a friend's house" is the number one place to engage in drug use and underage drinking. Never underestimate your influence as a parent or trusted adult - parental disapproval and monitoring are huge factors in a teen's decision to engage in risky behavior. Know where your teens are and who they're with. Monitor the alcohol and prescription drugs in your home. As a community, let's model behavior that shows our young people that leading alcohol- and drug-free lives is the best way to be happy, healthy and productive.
