My prediction; School Board Elections

I love teaching.
My prediction is that the school board will switch to November elections and that they will do so under the premise of listening to the malcontents. The perk will be that the 2 incumbents will stay in office 6 months longer and won't be going up for re-election in May of next year. The rubber stamping will continue yet they will be able to say they did it for us. Just a guess.

The schools exist to educate, not employ.
I think they would be scared spitless of a November election, as turnout would be higher, and dilute the power of the union voting block.

Did Scheel really make a motion that November elections are a good idea?

I think Micki is right on target. I'm fairly certain the idea of moving BOE elections to November has been talked about here and in front of the boards for at least 3 years. It was always poo-pooed. Even the seniors that were working the polls were shaking their heads at what a waste of money the last school elections was because of the ridiculously low turn-out. Many years after the fact, when the majority of the surrounding districts have moved their elections to Nov. to conserve money, this BOE can appear to be minding the budget and listening to their constituents while having the comfy bonus of having 6 more months with their like-minded rubber stampers.

Then why don't they just do it?

I don't know....maybe they've just paid lip service in the past to the idea and really do need to do their due diligence now that they've seen the writing on the wall. Check with the attorney's, make sure Northville, Novi and Plymouth are doing the same thing, etc. I do think they will vote for November elections. As many have said, in this economy, people are paying closer attention to these things. Especially our seniors, who I think outvote the rest of our community in local elections. What's your opinion?

Be prepared for odd year November elections. The board would be able to claim savings due to sharing the ballot with Wayne County issues and keep low turnouts. A win-win solution for status-quo school boards.

Some Plymouth-Canton School Board Trustees specifically said the even year November elections would not bring the 'right' candidates. Those trustees also claim even years would be too expensive for the candidates since they must send mail to all the absentee voters and there are too many of them in even years. Then the next sentence out is that people still have the right to come out and vote and it's not the board's fault if people don't exercise their right to vote. One side of their face says "Everyone come out and vote"; the other side says, "But not too many".

The right to vote must be preserved, for the "right" people.

I think they will try anything they can to get the lowest turn out possible, and watch for them to push 6 year terms to save costs. After all, the less you vote, the more they save.. ;)
