I poised camera ready as two lions faced off for a duel in the yellow dawn light of the Ngorongoro Crater. They leapt at each other’s throats, the pride of 3 lionesses and 7 cubs on the line. The intent and seasoned challenger eventually pinned the younger down by his throat for 30 minutes. Waiting, I prayed this was not a fight to the death, but the approaching opportunistic jackals hoped for a convenient feast. When the fighting resumed, I howled as my memory card expired. New memory card finally in hand, the younger lion limped away bloody and soiled, under the cold unrelenting stare of the pride’s new victor. I still worry for the safety of the cubs under the rule of the new master. As they disappeared into the trees of the crater rim, I breathed what seemed my first breath for the last 40 minutes.

After 30 minutes of gut-wrenching, primal combat, the new King of the pride defiantly emerged. With satisfaction, he vanquished the humiliated younger lion, his handsome pride no longer his own. The conqueror responded with a “Rocky Balboa” victory grimace. The dominating champion crossed and re-crossed in front of us stalking the loser, insuring the unseated king didn’t double back for a surprise rally. The dawn sun shone in the victor’s regal eyes, yellow surrounded by red, but the blood wasn’t his own. Totally unhinged by witnessing this kind of violence live, I reeled, realizing that no commercial was minutes away to give the loser a much needed rest. There was no script to follow, no makeup artist to give the perfect bloody touch to his mane, no director to request a re-shoot. This scene unraveled second by second before us, unrivaled by any our experienced guide had ever seen.

Awesome, Crater lions are truly the largest and most aggressive lions on earth. That picture is awesome, 30 minutes he tried to kill the other lion amazing. At least 450 pounds, jumping that high stunning.

I tried finding the source by following the picture address, but it only lead to a photobucket account. Can you please cite the source?

From just reading the account I can imagine the savagery of it all. Great post and pics.
And on that day when all the beasts of the earth were created, they did hear a thunderous roar which shook the heavens and the earth. It was then that they did know that among beasts GOD had made the Lion...KING!
