The Boundless One

You have absolutely no idea what happened. All you know now is that you're on some sort of rocky landmass that's ever so slowly starting to crumble apart. Not fast enough to endanger you, but at a rate quick enough to plunge you into that neverending abyss that surrounds everywhere else if you stand there and do nothing, expecting someone else to rescue you. There's only one path forward right now. It looks like it leads to a much larger central landmass. There's a pillar of light at the center of the mass extending upward. You're sure it'll last long enough to leisurely walk through. There's scarcely any sound... ...save for the strange, amorphic spirits floating around, glaring at you. Open Option |

Hey mister, she's my sister.

"CURSE YOU, JOHN STEELE!" To say Alexis was livid was an understatement. She had been moments - MOMENTS! - away from launching her Doomsday Rocket. The fools at the United Nations refused to submit to her rule, so Alexis had no choice but to show them why that was a horrible idea. It's not like it was her fault for wanting the world. Nobody else could run it right anyway. But then, John Steele invaded her island. He defeated all of the traps she laid, slaughtered scores of her lackeys, destroyed her sentry guns... alright, those weren't necessarily new. Jet Chan and Marianna Mambo frequently did the same thing until Alexis found their weaknesses. Unlike them, however, John Steele was untouchable. There was nothing she could do, nothing she could find that could stop him. Not even the countless hours of her top physicists could find anything! It was maddening. But everyone has to have a weakness! Besides herself of course, that would be unthinkable. And so it was that Alexis concluded that John Steele surely must love his country enough to just hate it being destroyed. It was only fair, given the headaches he had caused her, that John Steele be restrained on a table with a cutting laser slowing working to bisect him while a gigantic television monitor showed the rocket's progress. He would start to die just after seeing the entirety of S.A.B.R.E's territory in ruins. It was flawless! At least, until John Steele managed to break free. Worse, he activated the emergency spacial-temporal transmission device her quantum physicists had been working on while trying to kill her! Or, at least, what he thought was her. Alexis had been prepared and had a perfect clone of herself made for just such an emergency. That didn't stoop this predicament, however. Looking around, Alexis let out an exasperated huff. She didn't even have her lackeys any more. That also wasn't her fault; their failure to secure John Steele merited death as a punishment. As it was, Alexis started walking at a brisk pace forwards. Where else could she go, after all? Everywhere was slowly disintegrating, destroying itself... worthless. There wasn't even anyone here worth paying attention to. Just like everywhere else, this world was a mess and Alexis just needed to rule it. Who wouldn't be thankful for such a benevolent caretaker? |

Alexis' furious fuming of fury was interrupted by shouting from up ahead. "...what are you doing, you fools?! Get back up and fight! FIGHT!" The voice was certainly familiar, but Alexis couldn't put her finger on it just yet. Not without seeing who that voice was, and not without going through those spirits in front of her, their arms (or what looked like arms) angrily crossed. BATTLE! Alexis had stopped and stared at these foolish interlopers with a certain kind of serene disdain one would normally reserve for an unsightly carpet stain. Since they still hadn't moved after this and her outbust, Alexis crossed her arms and huffed. Normally, this would signal every one of her minions in the area to slaughter the fools daring to block her way. Normally. The trouble was that every single one of them was dead, all suffering from being burnt alive, and therefore there was no one around to enforce her will. Well, besides her. The indignity, being forced to do such menial labor...! Taking an impatient drag from her cigarette, Alexis blew the ensuing smoke in the faces of her ethereal enemies. That was their faces, right? "Oh, darlings, do you know who I am?" Intermixed with disdain was the tone of somebody who took this encounter as a joke. Unfortunately, it was kind where you laugh because it's your friend who always wanted to make it big as a comedian. "I come and go where I please. You really shouldn't interfere with that," Another drag and puff. At least Alexis found a way to cool down a little. A little. These cretins were still unsightly though. "I'd rather not dirty my pristine Siberian Tiger fur coat dealing with such ungrateful masses." And why should she? Alexis quite kind enough letting them live for this transgression. She'd killed men for less - their fault, of course. A thought occurred to her, one that made the beginnings of a terribly wicked smile grow on the Evil Genius's face. "Unless you really think yourselves heroes, of course." Unable to contain it after a moment, Alexis's tittering grew into laughter laced with mockery. As if! Not even the best of heroes could stop her from her rightful rule. Yes, even John Steele would kneel eventually. (Evil Laugh on Lightning Spirit) |

Normally, the malevolent spirits, full of hate and more hate, would simply screech unpleasant death requests at their victims and make with the killing. That someone actually stopped them with her sheer fury and hate was a surprise. That she was able to switch back to being calm was inordinate. Whatever the case was, the Lightning Spirit was seriously freaked the hell out. (78 damage!) ENEMY PHASE Both spirits gathered their power and hurled forward blasts of elemental energy. Alexis seemed briefly stunned, if her expression any indication. "You," A disbelieving pause, her cigarette set to one side as its odor ran its course through the area. "You genuinely do think yourselves heroes. For stopping me? For barring me from entry?" The thought was alien. Even the agents - S.M.A.S.H.'s in particular, those foolish oil sheiks - had other motives. Arrogance, prestige, money... ... That gave Alexis an idea. It'd require some patience, but might work. "I will graciously ignore the dirt the two of you got on my coat if you answer one question for me. Just what do you get out of doing this? Who is paying you? How much is your price? I know I make more than your employer does in five minutes' time." True, yes, these rabble seemed quite and very dead. Well, that or just deeply unhealthy and the result of some Freak-esque creation process. In either case, this wasn't likely to work. But if it did. Alexis could use the extra lackeys. "And how boring must it be, just floating around this drab wasteland? Why not visit exotic locales and tropical islands, savor the sights, and work for someone so immaculate and forgiving instead? Just imagine it." There were slight omissions, yes, but what was a white lie between a fabulous employer and potential sycophants... or several? "The glamour, the wealth, and working in my service. An unrivaled experience. I would even sanction indiscretion with others who displeased you." Alexis took a drag, exhaling with a pleased sigh. "Why not join the winning team, darlings? It's certainly more survivable than your," She tried to keep herself composed here, but it wasn't terribly effective. "current 'heroics'." The Evil Genius started laughing again. It was true though; they were doing a terrible job and were likely to die. Again, if that even applied. If they were sensible... Ah, but what hero ever was sensible anyway? Jet Chan wasn't. That's why Alexis was just forced to drug him before a match with her own martial artists. The fool thought he was beaten honorably and went into exile! Hah! |

...what? All the rage disappeared from the two spirits as they listened to the villainess make them an offer they couldn't refuse. The comparison to "heroics" was confusing as all get out, too. "Marvelous, darlings, marvelous." The Evil Genius gingerly swept the dirt of her coat, only deigning to look at her new sycophants through her pocket mirror while she checked for any other blemishes or, worse, spoiling in her makeup. A few pats later, Alexis was satisfied. "I'll get you both something in a nice shade of yellow soon, of course." One last drag made her pause, looking around while she enjoyed it. Well, she wasn't getting any younger... "Come now, darlings. I have a world to rule." And with that, Alexis continued straight along. The two recruits would pay for their initial insolence eventually, oh yes, but, for now, that had to wait. Tragic, really. If only she had that sentient super computer to torture them in. |

Ahead, Alexis could hear the sound of much villainous cursing of poor henchmanship. She was most certainly surprised to see who was facing off against a trio of spirits. Oh, now this was a sight to behold. That barely significant twit, surrounded by more of these carpet stains... and about to some comeuppance. As if he could be even half the evil genius Alexis was - seriously, who makes their base in the Great Wall of China anyway? Islands were so much better, especially volcanic ones. If it wasn't for Lord Kane being at his beck and call, well... Competition always was loathsome. "I always seem to find you in such exquisite circumstances, darling." The mocking sneer was so thick one could likely cut it. With a brick. Still, it was a typical situation for Shen Yu - he never could inspire loyalty or competence quite as well as her. Then again, who could? Nobody, of course. Not even Maximillian's preposterously short frame could command the adoration Alexis reveled in every moment of her life. Now what was he saying about insolent fools? "Oh, clean up your mess? Way ahead of you, darling." These carpet stains were in the way, yes, and that merited cleaning them up. That did not, of course, make allying with Shen Yu worthwhile - convenience is such a fragile thing and accidents are so prone to happen... Later, anyway. Alexis crossed her arms again and huffed. The malevolent spirits she recruited promptly floated in front of her - though whether that was due to her implicit command or just wanting to hate something to death wasn't entirely clear. "I do hope you aren't nearly as ill-equipped as it seems, darling." Alexis took an impatient puff from her cigarette, staring at the other Evil Genius expectantly. Shen Yu scoffed in response. "What do you take me for, a republic serial villain? I deployed sentry guns here thirty minutes ago." Shortly thereafter, the former Triader withdrew a radio from his robes. "FIRE!" Moments after giving the order, three sentry guns popped up from the ground - Alexis would have to figure out how he managed that here later - and started spewing lead death at the Malevolent Spirits. There was more radio chatter, but the opposite end wasn't important enough to spare time seriously eavesdropping. Consequently, the conversation Alexis heard was predictably one-sided. "I don't CARE about your safety limits! These can be replaced, keep firing!" The Chinese Evil Genius certainly got his wish. The Camoflagued Sentry Guns literally continued firing until the only noise was a rapid-fire 'click', then their withdrawal back into the ground. "Staying power problems, darling? Or is this just part of another one of your ancient Chinese secrets?" Alexis could barely hold back her titters. Seriously, unless their effectiveness was ridiculous then ammo storage that low was just pathetic. Her sentry guns were so much better. (Sudden Sentry guns x2 vs. all Hostile Enemies.) |

Well, that was acceptable. Nowhere near as effective as her own sentry guns, but... acceptable. There was also a fatal flaw Alexis sensed, related to her staying power comment, but it was worth confirming anyway. "You can't make this easier for both of us and do that again, can you?" Shen Yu's irritated look answered fairly well. "Oh, don't worry, darling, I'm certain it's just incompetent engineering. Certain." That was a relief. If he had planted more- That thought would have to wait, as her pocket mirror started to ring. Competent engineering was installing a communication system in something too innocuous to take away. "Yes?" Of course, being an emergency system, the caller had better be important. "Ma'am!" Oh, Number Two. Now what does she want? "Your science minions managed to find you after some fiddling with the teleportation device. Since they have a lock on you, we now can, with your permission, start sending Mercenary reinforcements until you return." "And should I expect to return to ruins?" "No, ma'am. The world believes you are dead. Again. They have ceased all searches for your greatness, as Maximillian is believed to pose a bigger threat." Taking a drag, Alexis puffed it out with an annoyed look. They never learn. "Fine, Number Two. Don't disappoint me." Moments later, the air in front of Alexis began to shimmer and distort before a literal hole in reality tore. A single Mercenary emerged and the tear closed immediately. "Ah, now you reveal how you stole so many Chinese treasures." Shen Yu crossed his arms, his glare palpable. Oh, was he still mad over her theft of those priceless Ming vases and the Terracotta army? What a shame. "Oh, come now, darling," Alexis tsk'd, shaking her head. "Jealousy gives you wrinkles." The lady mastermind didn't bother containing herself, derisive laughter erupting like a volcano. With a shiver, the Mercenary and Spirits decided to distract themselves. Violently. Shen Yu, of course, was even more cross. Not only did Alexis openly admit to stealing what really should've been his, but she was mocking him over it! The indignity! And, of course, not even he could stop this endless wave of reinforcements Alexis seemed to possess. Yet. As a result, he took out his frustrations the only prudent way presently possible. Affixing his gaze on the Light spirit, the Chinese Evil Genius glared venom-laced daggers at it while the gem on his face glowed downright menacingly. The sheer contrast made it seem like Shen Yu had a very dark and scary face! (Spirits Basic Magical Attack the Dark Spirit, Alexis's Evil Laugh and Shen Yu's I Have A Dark Face on Light Spirit) |

Ah, good. Another carpet stain joined forces. This was getting better and better. Shen Yu, however, still seemed cross. "They follow you." Though more of a question than a statement, the Chinese Evil Genius was glaring at Alexis nonetheless. How precious. "Darling, don't make me repeat myself. It isn't my fault my magnificence eclipses yours so completely." Alexis noted the effectiveness of her newly-recruited spirits... or total lack thereof. A third wouldn't help matters very much, but there was something to be said for overwhelming with sheer numbers. That something to be said was made all the more pertinent by the second Mercenary teleporting in as reinforcement. Marvelous. She might actually have to pay her Science minions for this. A reward would certainly motivate the team for future inventions... "Number Two, see to it than the ones responsible for the teleporter are rewarded generously." It wasn't like Alexis was in any danger, so the message being relayed in the middle of the battle didn't matter. Neither did checking her face in the mirror for any slight imperfections. What would dare strike her anyway? "Yes, ma'am." "You wear the follies of youth perfectly." Shen Yu's jarring comment prompted Alexis to shut her pocket mirror, only to notice his Dark Face was on overdrive... on one of the spirits. Didn't even have the respect to address her while talking. "Oh, you think so?" It probably wasn't a good thing that Alexis started laughing at an insult, much less how long she kept it up. Both mercenaries and the spirits tried to distract themselves in the meantime, only to flinch when it abruptly stopped. "Mind your manners, Shen," Really, what gave him the right to say such awful things? She had killed men for less than this. "You are not a delighted guest." (Alex, Shen Yu: Earth Spirit. Spirits: Dark Spirit.) |

"Surrender now!" the mercenaries shouted at the Dark Spirit. It replied with a gesture that clearly indicated "Or what?" The "or what" was, apparently, getting filled with lead, as the Earth Spirit found out. Faced with a bunch of gunfire and joining the rest of the crew, the Dark Spirit figured being a crony wasn't too bad. (Recruited!) Victory! The party gained 100 exp! The source of light was up ahead. Several other pathways branched from it, with the sounds of battle clearly audible. If Alexis so chose, she could go investigate these sounds. Or she could figure out what this light was supposed to be. Her choice, really. Open Option |
