Thanks for the lines Joyce, they are now set (at 30 ft) and ready ! I will use the other 60ft for the Cox PT-19 plastic RTF which will also come to SGP early to mid Sept. The dacron lines I got from Cox looked too thick and draggy so I will not be using them. I'm just waiting for the stormy weather to clear (hopefully) and maiden the Rockwell. It's like asking for the moon at this time of year in Perth !! Although I have not posted anything on this, another new build is a C/L 049 ME-109 profile, all-sheet model. I hope to complete it by Sept, time permitting. If you want photos, I can send direct to your email. It has progressed a fair bit and will be ready for final sanding and paint soon; again, weather permitting. Congrats on the comp last week, good organising and teamwork made it go well. Cheers Sotong |

Hi HB, thanks for the info but this model is priceless ! Here's the short history as to why...... My father bought it for me in 1975 ( my very first C/L plane ). He knew little about model planes (and so did I), but asked around and finally found a friend who personally knew Balbir Singh. Balbir recommended a "trainer" but did not have one so my father and his friend kept looking and found this one at MPH on Stamford Rd; upstairs where they used to sell Guillow's kits, Humbrol paints etc. Yes, I know it is a collectors' item and so I bought one (in memory of my late father) on Ebay last year !! I was the only bidder (I think) and got it at the $100 starting price ! The engine on the old one now is not the original because I had too many accidents while trying to learn !!! hehe... I also had to fabricate a new backplate as the 37 year-old original plastic one was like keropok when I took it out of storage early this year Thought of using parts from the 'new' PT-19 but decided to keep the new one as original as possible. May eventually end up using it for spare parts !! The first PT-19 was last flown around Dec 1976 (school holidays) and after we moved into a flat, it was kept in storage, then moved to Perth, out of storage early this year, re-con and now ready to fly again !! It also had it's maiden flight near where you guys fly now - Upper Aljunied Rd where we used to live and hopefully it will see it's maiden flying ground again So, too much good memories to sell or even give away to anyone. Hope I haven't bored you..... Happy Landings, Sotong |

Thanks for the interesting recollection of years gone by, especially of the Shop at North Bridge Rd with the high ceiling. Balbir & Co., that was the name wasn't it? And off course the boss himself, Balbir Singh! And his assistant, a Chinese man, who was one of the best mechanic for Team Race, probably the fastest pit-man at that time! Alas, my memory failed me and l couldn't remember his name, but l'm sure many of you could. Window shopping at Balbir was the only thing l could afford at that time. l well remembered the AM10, AM25 & AM35 diesel engine sitting pretty in the window display, and thought to myself that one day l will buy one of this. l never got to do this even when l could afford it many years later, as by then l had decided on glow engines. 1 memorable purchase was a Frog Glider KIT 30" wingspan, balsa stick and tissue construction, ribs are printed and have to be cut (no die cutting yet at that time). Had it built and had many hand launches in a football field. Good fun but fragile. Nice to think of the good old days! |

Hi SKLing, Do you remember the distinct smell when you walked along the corridor of 438 Nth Bridge Rd ? ( Sing Hobby) I still remember it ! Johnny used to give me the, "here comes the kid with little or no money look" and I hated it. Arshad, a fair Malay guy and Chris, a large Eurasian guy were the only 2 I remembered but now that you have mentioned Yong, it does ring a bell. Was he fairly old at that time, short and with a serious look ?? Haha... my most memorable buy from Balbir's was a Keil Kraft Phantom Mite. My father gave me $10 which was more than he could afford then and I had to dig up the rest. The kit cost $16 !!! I was still short of money for the kit plus busfare to and from Supreme House. My mother came to the rescue with about $1.80 ! I still have the 'remnants' - hope to resurrect it one day. Regards Sotong |

Hi Pira and Francis, what a coincident that both of you had the same treatment: "here comes the kid with little or no money look" !!!!!!!!!! But back at Balbir & Co, where l could only afford window shopping for several more years. 1 day in my usual window shopping act, my eyes sparkled as l saw a new product on display - a single channel sequential escapement radio set. l was intrigue and pluck up whatever little courage l've got to go into the shop to enquire the price. Yong attended to me. Politely he informed that the set is $150 and equally politely without any request on my part, he took out the set to point out the receiver/escapement/transmitter. l murmured something like 'will think about it', thank him, and left the shop. l had 35 cents in my pocket for recess spending later in the day! Yes Pira, your recollection of Yong is correct. Started work as an apprentice with an allowance of $137 a mth. Annual increment was $45 so by the third yr, l was already quite "rich" by my standard! Johnny's shop haven't moved to North Bridge Rd, it was still at Changi Village and the Rd serving it was a mud Rd. Lots of British soldiers and their family throng the Village at that time as the Royal Airforce had their airbase in Changi. Johnny was quite well known among the British modellers as you hear him being mentioned by name as l made my way to the Shop. l bought a Pilot 100, a 3-channel (rudder/elevator/throttle) all balsa kit, powered by a OS Max 15 (now used on the Superplan 746!). This was my 1st RC plane. Had many crashes with this plane and it was reduced to scrape, with the exception of the wing, still in 1 piece and still in my hangar till today! |

Hi guys or, should I say, G'day mates ! Francis, SkLing and Ang HB It seems like we all had the same treatment from JY. Kheng Wah was also greeted with the same disrespect when he was young but he got his so-called 'revenge' when he opened NTC right next door to JY in Fook Hai....haha And yes Ang, it rings a bell - the shop was called Shin Fatt. I must be getting old Francis, all I can say to anyone is, we have to enjoy our hobby and if any shopowner treats you with any form of disrespect, just don't go there. There are lots of places at which you can shop now unlike those days, including online ones. I still prefer the good-old-fashioned way where you walk into a shop like Ling said, you are served by someone and you can physically see and feel what you intend to buy. You can open the box, feel the engine, even have a sniff (!!) or look at the plans on a kit, touch the balsa parts, (have another sniff !!) the list goes on... SK Ling, I know the feeling too well. I went into the old Orchard Store and looked for a radio that I knew I could never afford; a McGregor SINGLE chanel proportional. I looked at the price tag and quietly walked out....it was $90.00 Some of the young ones may not appreciate what they have at their disposal now and I hope that our sharing so far (if they read it ) helps them to be prudent and still enjoy this great hobby !Happy Landings !
