Planning to build a new plane for cox .049. First attempt on foams: ![]() Should have heeded advice to get blue or pink foam... just cutting the blocks of foam caused so much bits to be flying around. Thank goodness my mini vacuum cleaner came in handy. ![]() Wished i had a sanding belt... hee hee... Edited by Joyce Wong, Friday Mar 2 2012, 12:52 AM.

Are you planning to fiberglass it and then dissolve the foam? ![]() In what thickness can you get pink or blue foam in Singapore, and how much does it cost?? Yeah, you avoid beads of foam flying around and sticking to everything, but you instead get fine blue or pink powder flying around and sticking to everything!!! Iskandar |

you can get blue foam at a construction supply shop for about $20 a piece 2m x 1m x 5 cm approximately but if you go to the manufacturers in Tuas its about $350plus for a 3m x 0.5m x 1.2m ( if my memory serves ). Cutting with a hot wire is much better..even a short length of guitar wire and a 2 D cells will work.. Shane |

Hmmm... So $20 will get a sheet about 6 feet by 3 feet by 2 inches. Hmmmmmm.... What color is it and what brand? In the US, the blue stuff (Styrofoam(tm)) was made by Dow, the pink (FoamulAr) by Owens-Corning and there was a green foam, can't remember ever seeing it in shops, but I recall someone making F2D leading edges with it. The blue stuff was always 2 lb/cu.ft., the pink stuff was available in several densities, the lightest being 1.5 lb/cu.ft.. Aside from leading edges, one could slice it easily (shim your hot wire some distance above a flat surface, then run the foam through) and the thinner sheets could be used for all sorts of things. The Electric RC people use it for what they call "foamies", the British make peanut scale rubber models from it, etc. Slice it about 3/8" thick, sheet on both sides with 1/16" balsa and cut 1/2-A fuselages out of it. Wa, thats pricey... Thank you Francis!!! Finally got started since i got that block of blue foam. Its definitely faster sanding the blue foam... ![]() But agreed, its sticking everywhere too... Thank goodness i still have my handy vacuum ![]() And just when i thought i finally had that little time to build, the lights played all me and poof, total darkness... guess that marks the end of a precious night... Finally got time to build my plane again..![]() 17 inches wingspan, hope its not too small... ![]() ![]() After vandalising on my fuselage, found out that it looks ugly to make an extra cowling for the engine, so i decided to change some plans... more updates tmr... Isky, Its polystyrene foam hot wire cut-able, pink or blue or white if you want... you can specify the density 1lb/cu ft upwards. Joyce, Looking good. its less messy with a hot wire.. Shane |

Fibreglassing is done, its now 6 layers thick, makes no big difference from the 4 layers i originally used. Probably because it might not be 6 layers after all since i sanded quite a fair bit. Below just two shots of what i did to it to check its stiffness. Pretty cool seeing the foam dissolving. The Disappearing Act. Haha... ![]() ![]() Next step will be to remove the bulk of the foam and stuff some formers along the way. Hope it will work out fine.. More to come this week.. Finally some time to continue with the plane. Here are the updates: ![]() ![]() Fuselage looks kind of long in the picture, but still looks ok live... hahs... ![]() Tada... its all cleared... Wish i have more time on hand... can't wait to complete it... No fancy pictures yet sorry, all still at experimental stage. Next step is to beef up this whale and start to "control" it.. Whaley plane is back! ![]() Bellcrank the wrong way?? Nononono... just took a pic of the plane inverted... Hee hee.. The two carbon strips is to strengthen the portion under the wing slots and to act as some form of attachment to the cowling. (PS: haven't thought how but the plan will come soon )![]() Lesson learnt: Don't do the cowling until you are done touching up the body. I threw away the original cowling done as the body has changed its shape a fair bit from the start... But i really enjoyed shaping the new cowling, it feels like shaving ice ![]() Managed to do some fibreglassing today with 4 layers, cross grain . I don't think its enough.. Will add another 2 layers later after wet sanding. To be continued.... Edited by Joyce Wong, Wednesday Jun 20 2012, 10:24 PM.
