sorry for the double posting. This post actually include a video clip to prove it can be done, then you figure out how it's done. Unfortunately the clip just wouldn't get attached in spite of my repeated efforts.

Done that during my school days.
It is something called the mortiser.
Basically, it is a hollow square and heavy duty tube with the bottom edges sharpened, inside the hollow is a drill bit that will actually do the drilling. As pressure is added, the sharp edges, bevelled on the inside of the tube, will sort of push the wood towards the drill bit. At two upper sides of the tube are two open slots for the waste material to 'exhaust' out.
There are various sizes to suit.
