I am now building a 1/2A Skyray, reduce to 1/2 size from the original 44" span. For those who are building it, here are some pointers. 1) Increase the height of the fuselage by 1/2" for more strength. 2) Increase the tail moment by about 1" to 1 1/2", CG problem. Now I have to mount the fuel tank to the fuselage and into the LE of the wing! With the engine at the LE, I hope to get the CG correct, otherwise, I may have to add tail weight. 3) The wing is of 1/8" balsa sheet, with 2 layers of 3/32" sheets of 1.8" wide laminated on the top and bottom of the LE, thereby, forming the KF? airfoil. Of course, now I have this area greatly weakened when the tank is mounted. H B Ang. |

Had decided to replace the fuselage with my guesstimate dimensions. Was able to shift the engine forward, but still nose heavy! Now to build another shorter tank and hopefully, the CG would be ok. Otherwise, have to add tail weight! H B Ang. |

Sometimes l take the "longer" route by cutting out all the parts, assemble into sub-assys, then temporarily placing them in their respective position and shift the engine position to get the CG correct before locating the engine bearer. |

Hi Ling, Nelson flew the model this morning, had to add tip weight. Model was set up as per my guesstimate, with 5 gm tailweight! It flew ok. needs some trimming still. H B Ang.

SIG does sell a 1/2-A Skyray kit - in actuality it came many years before the big one. It has something like a 24x4 wing (1/8" sheet balsa), and a balsa profile fuselage (3/16" thick). Builds quickly, and is aerobatic (easy loops and 8s). Nose tends to break off easily so I would extend the nose reinforcing wedges back past the LE of the wing. Too small for Tee Dees and Norvels, but just the right size for a Golden Bee or Black Widow. Iskandar |
