This kit is definitely not for anyone starting out ! Even I'm having problems that a beginner will probably never sort out !! Not recommended unless you have some building experience :-/

Anyway, the photos will show the many mods that had to be made.

The Cox Surestart was recommended but it needed a seperate 3/8oz tank. No instruction in the kit as to how or where to mount it.

Since my Black Widow and Golden Bee were stiff and sitting somewhere I decided to use the one that was recommended.

I had to cut a hole in the wing at the centre of the fuselage so that the tank will not sit too high or too low.

Will keep posting as my building progresses...... ;)

BTW, sent an email to Cox...

Almost finished covering with tissue and dope. Just gonna keep it simple...

It's funny how when you walk into a hobby shop in Australia these days and ask some young guy for "dope", you will probably be told to look for a drug dealer down the street !!!

Now this other incident happened in Singapore - I asked my friend to bring the blue film which was for my AD-6 Skyraider but the police somehow intercepted our conversation and followed him all the way to my flat only to find that he was carrying a roll of blue Monokote !!! Imagine their embarassment...!!lol

Anyway, here's some photos on the progress...

Please feel free to comment as this will help other builders who could be on the same or similiar project.

With regard to my earlier comments about the kit and my email to Cox, I have to say that they are very "on-the-ball" and replied to me within 2 days and among other things, agreed to rectify some of the problems with the kit which I highlighted.

They even offered to give me a full refund of US$36.00 for the kit which I refused. I thought it just wasn't right.

Cheers

Hi Sotong and Joyce,

Thanks for posting the build progress. Sorry, I am a bit late in posting.

Sotong, did you fuel proof the tank compartment? Your model is looking good. How come I don't have the plan or kit for this?! Joyce! :o

Joyce, the top and bottom sheetings on the fuselage should be have the grains running across, so that the fuselage would not split in the event that it meets Mother Earth! :'(

With an integral tank engine, check the C. G. You may have to lengthen the tail moment.

Well, that was my 2 cents worth.

Thanks Mr. Ang,

Yes, I did fuel proof the tank compartment with epoxy thinned with acetone, old fashioned, but it works !! Thanks for the advice...

As for the plans for this kit, I emailed to Cox and they told me that they feel that the 3-views were sufficient and there was no need for a full-size plan and I certainly disagreed.

I told them that I was guessing as to where to put the firewall for a Cox surestart which they said the model was designed for and if I was going to use a Black Widow like Joyce, where was the firewall going to go ?? And... where was the thrust line ??? It was all guesswork for me.

Even though they said that the model was designed around the Cox surestart, the instruction manual, if you can call it that,(!) leaves much to be desired.

The surestart does not have an integral tank like the B/widow or Golden Bee and the worst part is that they did not provide any instructions as to where to place the 3/8 oz tank which by the way, was indicated in the sales brochure as an additional item in order to complete the model.

I told them about this and they kind of said that they will try to rectify some of the problems associated with the kit... but they still believe that they have a "top quality" kit. :-/

Hey Joyce, Mr.Ang is right !

I just saw a foto of your bottom sheeting. The grain should not run lenghtwise. If you have super glued it and can't correct it now, then just place strips of 1/16 balsa strips on the inside of the bottom sheeting and make sure those strips touch the fuselage sides on the inside of the fuselage.

Below is a foto, showing the current state of my plane

For this model think strenghtening the firewall would be wise..... for the bottom planking if building bigger size model would be more important grain wise.....for 049 i would keep it light..... hey sotong think can use your Mark I eyeball to find the trustline... B) B) B)

Huh? Did i hear something? haha...

Well well you sure after all these complaints about the kit, you still want it? No plan like mentioned by sotong, next time i show you then you will understand... just some vague pictures with the approximate spacing... All building done up using agaration... worm (a first-time built up fuselage beginner) have completely no idea where the supporting sticks are supposed to go until worm consulted sotong.

ok, lucky havent covered the top... hahs...

Hi Sotong,
I remember when I was starting out in this hobby, many kits were worse than this. Which was good for me, that I have to start thinking and guessing and then got stuck in this hobby! But those were the, maybe, good, old days. If I were to build one, I would feel young again!! :D
As to where the firewall should be, minus the difference of integral tank to the surestart backplate and air intake tube. The thrust line is usually slightly higher than the wing chord line, I guess it is not really critical on this small model.
C. G. wise, some tail weight would be easier than lengthening the tail moment.

Joyce, I was just pulling your legs! :ermm: After hearing the complaints, maybe I'll enjoy complaining too! :D

Have fun.

Nah, Ang, you're not complaining....it's called giving a 2 cts worth.
My cobra had the planking like Joyce too... It did not split in-spite of 2 cashes.
Moreover, it's made of 1/32 inch balsa.

Hi Simon,
I think your Cobra is film covered all over, therefore the sheetings did not gave way, moreover, the model is pretty light. Nice flying model.
