The Keil Kraft Firebird was a popular model in my youth. It was my first flapped stunter build and I recall that it flew very nicely on a PAW 2.49 BB. The kit as I recall was typical for the time with die crushing, variable wood quality etc but the design was good and it flew very well. With the bat plane wingtips, this model was quite unique. This build is from a plan I downloaded. As is my usual practice, I traced the plan and redrew it in vector format. This to remove scanning errors. The plan I had downloaded had a variety of issues resulting from slight distortions during the scanning process. Ribs were somewhat asymmetric and some lines came out slightly crooked. Redrawing in vector format also allows me to produce the patterns for critical parts with greater accuracy which I then print, cut out and paste on the wood for cutting - a fast and effective way of transferring the parts from the plans to wood. Usually, I would redraw the entire plan but for this plan, I only redrew the parts that were affected by scanning errors. Saved me a bit of time which allowed me to get going with this project faster.

I prefer to first produce a full kit of parts before I start building.

The engine to power it will either be a Fora diesel or a Parra 2.5 diesel.

I won't provide much narrative except as the build is pretty much straight forward and the photos pretty much says it all.

Tissue is doped on to solid surfaces in preparation for sanding sealer.

The wing is covered with Polyspan. Polyspan tissue is ironed on to the structure with Balsaloc as the adhesive. Polyspan unlike tissue does not water shrink. It is heat shrieked in much the same was as Monokote etc. Then clear doped to seal.

Polyspan only comes in white. To add colour, a special dye is mixed into highly diluted dope and sprayed on to provide the desired tinting. Water slide decals were printed and sealed with Krylov Crystal spray. All tissue surfaces are then sprayed with 2 coats Klasskote 2 part epoxy clear gloss as a fuel proofer. The fuselage is spray painted with 2k Polyurethane paint which is already fuel proofed.

The engine shown here is the glow version of the Parra 2.5. The engine will have an initial running in as a glow engine. The head and venturi will be swapped out and replaced with the diesel head and venturi to complete the running in process and then attached to the model for flying.
