![]() We picked up this game the day it arrived at Kelyndra's work... but I didn't do up a review, and apparently neither did she :P New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a classic styled Mario game in the Super Mario Bros. 3/Super Mario World format that really brings back the classic feel of those iconic Nintendo games, with some modern twists. As usual, Princess Peach has been captured by Bowser and Mario et al. go off to save her. The game brings back the flying ships of Mario 3, with Bowser's fiends blocking your way as you move from themed world to themed world in your quest to rescue the princess and confront Bowser. In single player mode, the game is your basic Mario; with the addition of a couple new powerups, such as the Propeller Mushroom, giving you a propellered cap that allows some flight, a Penguin suit that lets you slide around on your belly like a penguin on ice... really it's kinda similar to the Koopa suit. It also uses some of the powerups introduced in older games and New Super Mario Bros. for DS, such as the mini mushroom and ice flower. The game also uses the motion sensor of the Wiimote in game play. The Wiimote is held sideways like a classic controller, but certain features use motion as well as the buttons for control. Using your propeller cap and spin jumps, for example, require that you give the Wiimote a vertical shake. You can also pick things up by holding a button and vertical shaking while next to them. Certain platforms can be tilted while standing on them by tilting the Wiimote side to side. All in all, it has a wonderfully classic feel and theme that should keep old-school Mario lovers fairly happy. Multiplayer is where the real big differences come in with the game. Unlike classic multiplayer, where you can have 2 people playing, this game allows up to 4. I've only played the Cooperative mode of multiplayer; the other forms might be fun, but I can't really comment on them. In Cooperative mode, players are going through the story together, but where normally, you would take turns playing levels, in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, everyone plays the levels together at the same time... yup, up to 4 people all trying to do the same thing. While this sounds like a really neat idea, I hate it :P I find more often than not players end up playing the interference game, messing one another up left, right and centre, resulting in frustration and lost lives more than success. Part of the problem is that you can jump on one another, push one another, and generally get on one another's way... and when one person dies, there is a momentary pause in the game play, just a split second, that can really mess up another player's carefully timed actions, causing things like missing a platform or jumping next to, instead of onto, an enemy. That said, having multiple players active at the same time does have some advantages. For example, while one's going after a dragon coin, the other could be killing the enemies that would be in the way on the way back. Or, one could be controlling a mobile platform with their Wiimote motion sensor while the other makes use of the platform without having to worry about the orientation of their own Wiimote (yay for stability!)... but I found that these moments of cooperative joy tend to be eclipsed by the frustration of failure it tends to cause. ![]() By and large, this is an awesome game... but be warned, in Coop mode, you may feel some animosity towards your best friend ;) |

In Real Life ™, people who aim to maximize their potential for lethality are called "dangerous psychotics" and are typically avoided by everyone who isn't forced to endure their company until someone has the opportunity to put them away or else put them down. No one likes that guy. Don't play that guy. Donate to Ankhanu Press | |
