Pretty early in after buying my iPhone I wanted a good die roller app for the phone. Most of what I found weren't terribly good, and for what they were, were too costly (ie. I had to pay for them and they sucked). I found this app, Quick Roll for $2.99 and it appeared to be essentially what I wanted... but not quite. I decided then that the best plan was to write my own app. Basically, I liked the idea of quick roll's individual character entries, each with its own set of dice macros, but found the app a little too limited... I wanted something to handle all the games that I normally play, rather than just a D&D style roll ruleset. A couple months later, I'm back to thinking about it, but thinking about it more technically, thinking about what it should do and some of the layout ideas. I purchased Quick Roll and tested it out in my most recent Pathfinder session. It worked pretty nicely, but it had the shortcomings I figured it had, and I discovered a few more; largely related to layout of the app, that I'd like to address in my die roller/portfolio. My basic question to you is: What features would you look for in a character portfolio and die roller application? I know most of you don't have an iPhone, but in general idea, what would you look for? If I can code this for iPhone, I see no reason why it couldn't be made for Windows/Mac/Linux. What I have so far for features are: .: Basic die rolling presets/customizability .: Macro sets for individual characters .: Handles different die rolling rulesets ---- WotC/Pathfinder ---- WEG Star Wars ---- World of Darkness (old, possibly new) .: Convenient tabbed layout for related roll sets ---- Attack/Damage related rolls ---- Abilities/Saves ---- Skills ---- Special abilities, etc. .: Preset ability/skill lists for each programmed game system, with ability to add custom skills ---- rolling menu and custom entry field |

so, is this going to be a game aid, or a dice roller. because ideally you would want to put the whole chr sheet into a program, and it would track all conditions (buffs, de-buffs, etc) modify rolls accordingly etc. |

I want to build it with specific die rolling sets and generic skill/ability sets... something functional primarily as a die roller, with game aid functions without having to worry much about copyright issues :P Sort of a lite character sheet that will roll for you. Adding some of the more common buff types (ie. Bless) as selectable condition modifiers is a good idea, but for the most part things of that nature would be best dealt with under the customized rolls and free-roll options (you program them in as a macro or a one-time roll). I may want to make it more robust later, but for the first version, something a little less bulky is the goal... something like Quick Roll with better organization and additional rolling rules. |
