Google Wave; New venue for online RPGaming?

I'm sure more than a few of you have encountered Google Wave in the last little bit (though probably haven't acquired an account yet); a new communication tool allowing users to chat, share images, docs, etc., basically allowing users to collaborate on different projects. The app has some pretty obvious uses in communication and collaboration, but I think it has some pretty interesting possibilities for online role playing. The ability to create editable chat threads, share maps and all that jazz could really streamline online games.

There could be some issues, but with a little GM control I think this could be a very usable gaming venue.

Thoughts?
In Real Life ™, people who aim to maximize their potential for lethality are called "dangerous psychotics" and are typically avoided by everyone who isn't forced to endure their company until someone has the opportunity to put them away or else put them down. No one likes that guy. Don't play that guy.

I think it'd be worth a try. How about we plan on using Google Wave for the Renegade Hunter plotline when Varlan has a chance to join in?

You and I should probably test it out first. Are user accounts now available?

It's in Beta. I've applied for an account (link provided in OP), but haven't had a response yet.

I'm not the only one considering the RPG possibilities for Google Wave (still no response on my invite app, btw). Wil Wheaton Tweeted a link to an article outlining the potential uses of Wave for RPGs and some of the likely pitfalls and ways to restructure your approach to online games to work within the Wave framework. They provide an example of game play that's interesting to read through.

I thoroughly enjoyed that article. I don't think it'll translate itself well to D&D unless a more dynamic image segment is added to it, due to the sheer complexity of combat. However, for more story-based RPGs like Call of Cthulhu, this'll be brilliant.

There are already Wave gadgets being written for gaming, like this one for dice rolling: http://wave-samples-gallery.appspot.com/ab...pp?app_id=53001

I love that people are already working on these things already. The potential increases.

Damara was kind enough to get me hooked up with a Wave invite, so I'm in, but haven't played with it yet. Once I get some invites, I'll start distributing them.

Interestingly enough, I tried to log in to Wave from work using IE7; seems they don't support IE (they support Chrome, Safari and Firefox). To use Wave in IE you have to install a Chrome application to IE (which I couldn't since I don't have admin access at work).

The die roller gadget is pretty basic and functional... but could use a lot of work.

One version is kinda clunky, taking up a lot of space and doesn't offer a drop down of dice to roll. It does allow you to add and subtract modifiers on die rolls, and keeps a log of the last 5 (maybe more) rolls.

The other version, the one in the video, is more compact, with a drop down for different dice, but doesn't seem to give the ability to use modifiers. It also doesn't keep a log of what's been rolled, as soon as you choose the next die type to roll, your previous total disappears.

They're certainly a start, and perhaps a little later I'll build one that's more robust, and maybe offers some rolling rules for other game systems than a general d20 ruleset.

Just looks to be XML, so if you know how to work with that (and I hear it's not too hard) then making an app shouldn't be too difficult.
