I got an email today informing me about D&D Online Unlimited and it's free online play. Free MMO, woo!

I haven't finished looking into it, but I think the Game is a free download too. Unfortunately it is Windows only, no Linux or Mac versions (though a VM may do the trick). Looks like it is free (See FAQ) with the option to buy benefits with cash... don't even need the credit card to play at all.

I might have to give this a DL and give it a go. Who's with me??

In Real Life ™, people who aim to maximize their potential for lethality are called "dangerous psychotics" and are typically avoided by everyone who isn't forced to endure their company until someone has the opportunity to put them away or else put them down. No one likes that guy. Don't play that guy.

Didn't mention, but like with Stormreach, this is in Eberron.

The free game gives you 2 character slots, you can buy more.
There are purchasable classes, ie. Monk, Favoured Soul, and races, ie. Warforged and Drow elf, but there are plenty of free races and classes.
Available classes are:
-- Fighter
-- Barbarian
-- Paladin
-- Sorcerer
-- Cleric
-- Wizard
-- Ranger
-- Rogue
-- Bard
Available Races:
-- Human
-- Halfling
-- Elf
-- Dwarf

I haven't chosen my character yet, but the graphics look pretty nice so far, even on my old Inspiron 5150 (P4 2.8Ghz, 2Gb RAM, 64Mb nVidia GeForce something).

I made an Elf Ranger, on the Sarlona server.

Just of note, I made that character as one I could solo with without much difficulty. For party play, I'm kinda interested in exploring other classes that are less solo-friendly.

Looks like Turbine's using truthful deception *shock* concerning the free play. There is effectively a level cap for free play at about 8th level, 12th level with some serious effort. Later level content is almost all locked out and has to be paid for. While you DO get turbine points or whatever they are for playing, even the free game (I have 50 now), content costs a couple hundred points per expansion (quests, levels, races, classes, etc). It's possible to get enough points with some serious grinding, but goddamn that's nasty.

I was hoping for a good free full play game that makes its money off of added content, rather than access to standard content, but alas. Can't say I'm the least bit surprised, and it's really not a bad system, but their wording was a little deceptive (quite intentional, I'm sure) to imply that you can play through without ever paying... without having to jump through nigh impossible hoops. Ah well.

Vong, Kelyndra and I played a good session last night:
Vong - Millos Neverbottom - Dwarf Paladin
Kelyndra - Solanara - Elf Ranger
me - Echana de Laros - Halfling Sorceress

We managed to get to level 2, add a couple enhancements, get a little gold and complete a few quests. Was a fun 2hr.

The starting level/area is the exact same starting area from DDO Stormreach, which I'd tested out on release back in '06. There was really no difference, except this time I had friends testing it out with me :P We ended off last night at about the same spot that I reached testing solo three years ago.
I look forward to a couple more sessions before my job takes me away from the internetz for a week at a time :)

I got the game going last night after you guys were asleep. I made a human cleric on the Sarlona server, I think his name is Subatan, though I'll confirm that later.

I'm wondering at your play experience; I played the game in '07, and this introductory quest seems to be completely different to what I remember. Are you in the island with the snow and the white dragon that destroyed your ship?

In any case, I made this cleric for non-solo play, so I'll try to level up and find you guys. I want to do this interesting white dragon quest line, so it might be a day or two before I get to your point.

Yeah. The very first solo bit is new (as I recall), but once you get to the town, the crypt qyest, warehouse, tavern, etc are all the same. We just did the white dragon quest (Vong and I) about an hour or so ago, it was interesting and a little bit of a challenge (watch your footing). We will run it again so that you can do it ... we've been trying them at increasing difficulties, and have found the Elite difficulty too much for our current abilities.

I stopped to refocus my energies with the intention of starting up again when I was done... I'm not done yet ;)
