The theme of dreams is rather difficult to persue in most roleplaying games... yet can be very important to the plot, even the very setting, of many games. Dreams in D&D can be used to pass on plot information and plot hooks; could be the realms of some strange creatures, etc. Dreams are of utmost importance in games like Changeling: the Dreaming, where they are the very stuff that fuel the souls of the characters and create half of the setting. Dreams or visions in Star Wars can drive character development and drop hints to the character as to whether or not they are on the right path (The Force and dreams can be pretty similar). Other games, too, can easily incorporate dreams to spectacular effect. Despite their possibilities, dreams are pretty difficult to deal with. They tend to be personal experiences, so one-on-one player/gm work is usually required. They're highly symbolic and somewhat surreal, requiring some creative abstract thought for the GM to create them, and getting the point across can be difficult (even in the most direct circumstances). Some suggestions for working dreams into your campaign have been made by the folks at dungeonmastering.com, and I've copied them below.

In Real Life ™, people who aim to maximize their potential for lethality are called "dangerous psychotics" and are typically avoided by everyone who isn't forced to endure their company until someone has the opportunity to put them away or else put them down. No one likes that guy. Don't play that guy. Donate to Ankhanu Press | |
