Game concept; ... and character creation

The idea for this game will be along the vein of mystery horror... something of a departure for me, I've never really tried this sort of gaming. We'll see what sort of a plot I can pull together.

So, setting wise, it's going to be dark... probably with a heavy city component. People live in fear, both of monsters and of one another. Treachery, slavery, human sacrifice, general exploitation of beings and resources are the name of the game. True goodness is hard to come by, but there are shining pillars among the festering darkness of the world.
You'll be starting play in or near the city of Forvalon; a modest capital of about 12,000 beings; mostly humans, with a thriving Halfling population. Elves and Dwarves also call the city home, but they are not particularly common. There is an Orc stronghold in the mountains East of Forvalon and the two nations, while not at war, often have border skirmishes. Trade exists between the two nations, however, and there is some talk of treaties. Half-orcs, whether created through rape or more noble union, are not uncommon in the region. Gnomes are few and far between.

Characters can be any alignment, but remember, you're going to have to work with the other players; you might not want to be too much of an individualist/anarchist. Likewise, most classes are available to you, though you may want to confer with me on your alignment/class choice and the character concept/personality... and their goals. This will help me build a better, more personalized game.
Characters will be starting at 1st level, with standard starting gold for your class to buy your equipment.

You will be coming together (or already together) in defense of Forvalon against a new threat: the necromancer Dalsoth has made his intentions to destroy Forvalon quite clear, mounting attacks on the city with his undead minions. There are rumours that Dalsoth is trying to brook the favour of the dark gods to mount his final attack and crush the city. It will be your job to investigate these rumours, ferret out Dalsoth's supporters and stop the necromancer before he can be successful.

I suppose a qustion that we should address is whether we play using D&D 3.5 rules, or the updated Pathfinder RPG rules. expansion material for 3.5 is, with very little conversion, fully compatible with Pathfinder, so we'd still have plenty of resource material to draw from.

One of the major differences for your game play will be in the abilities and relative power of the races and core classes. Pathfinder makes things a little more powerful than 3.5.

I've never been an adept when it comes to DnD, and have a hard time finding differences between 3.5 and 3. I'm sure I'd find difference between 3.5 and 4, but as for 3.5 or pathfinder, it'll likely be all the same to me. I won't know what I could have been.

The rule differences from 3 to 3.5 are, well, largely in specific mechanics; there's not a lot of differences. From 3.5 to 4 is a complete system change, but 3.5 to pathfinder is more akin to 3 to 3.5, but on a scale that affects the very defining features of characters: races, class progressions, skill list and some tweaks to feats. All in all, though, there's not a huge difference.

Any ideas for character concepts?

I told you mine already, but I'll refresh your memory.

I was going for a potion-maker/alchemist who owned a shop in the city. She probably would be known among the less-than-savoury types for selling blackmarket wares as well as her legit stuff.

Race would be human. Not sure about anything else yet.
