I thought I had a thread on this topic already made, but I suppose it was on an older incarnation of one of my mesageboards, as I can't find it. So, here we go... In Roleplaying games, there are two basic roles, that of Player and that of Game Master (Or Dungeon Master, Storyteller, or whatever title your particular game gives the role). Everyone who is involved in RPGs has a preference for being one over the other. My question is: which of these two roles do you prefer, and why? Yes, I haven't been a Player/Game Master is a valid reason to prefer one over the other ;) You could even prefer different roles depending upon the game system played. |

I usually GM in D&D games, and tend to enjoy it. If I have the opportunity to play, though, I like diving right into a character. |

I prefer being a player however if I don't GM for a while my head starts to get too full of story ideas and worlds I want to create. |

Haha, yeah, I find D&D difficult to DM myself. While I've enjoyed the characters and ideas in the D&D games I've run, actually creating encounters... and especially creating statted NPCs was just hellacious. I have a fair bit of experience as both a game master and a player, but my preference has always been for the player position. I suppose the preference is a little selfish; I don't have to worry about anything but appropriately interacting with the setting and having a good time. By contrast, as game master, ultimately you're responsible for ensuring everyone else has a good time (while doing so yourself, but, in the end, enhancing their experience is paramount). I do enjoy game mastering, though; creating an interesting setting, characters and plot for everyone else to experience and seeing it evolve with player input. There's a lot of work involved, but it is rewarding. I'm terrible at preparing, however :P I almost entirely run games by the seat of my pants, improvising situations, encounters and what have you... meaning I almost NEVER actually run through my intended plots, rather I end up playing loosely related scenarios with no idea how to steer the game where it was intended to go... not that any fun is lost for anyone else though. I find I also encounter the story lags due to lack of preparation, forcing me to pause game play as I think about how to resolve something, or where to go. Yeah, GMing can be frustrating :P |

It seems we have similar GMing styles, I have a friend (whose style I greatly enjoy but just can't emulate) who plans for everything. It's a very rare occurrance for us to do something that he hasn't planned for in some way even when we really go off the wall. |

I find it better to go with pre-made dungeons if you have the sort of group that likes to do that, and if you're like most of us and have no time to make a gigantic campaign encyclopedia. So if anyone wants to DM a Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil adventure, let me know! |
