Completing Her Arm

Raine walked through the doors of Ollivander's Wands with a look of awe and excitement placed on her face. She looked at the stacks upon stacks of boxes that she could only assume held the mighty wands, one of which would soon be hers. Her parents followed her in silently, happy to sit back and watch for the moment.

Raine had heard the story of when her mum had first walked through the very same door that she currently stood within. She had gone through 3 wands before Ollivander handed her her now prized possession. She had managed to break a window, send a whole stack of wands crashing to the floor, and put a rather large gash in his arm before hand, but the important thing was that eventually she had the right one. Raine could only imagine what her mum meant when she said, "It seemed as if my arm was finally complete," but she sure hoped to find out soon.

She looked around curiously, not seeming able to find the infamous Ollivander anywhere within the limits of her vision. She wondered if perhaps he was waiting for her to say something, hiding within the confines of the millions of wands, or perhaps he was bending down behind the desk, not having noticed her arrival. She decided to make her presence known, hoping that he might hear her.

"Excuse me...I'm here for a wand." She said questioningly.

Ollivander was, in fact, going slightly crazy rummaging through the horde upon horde of wand cases at the very back of the shop, though it wasn't the sheer number of wands--in every shape, size, color, and wood imaginable--that had him frustrated. Instead, quite possibly for the first time in his long labored life, it was the simple task of assigning the right wand to its owner that had him flustered. See, it wasn't such a very simpe task at all. One of the wealthiest and most influential wizards working at the Ministry had requested a wand for his son who was soon to be enrolling in Hogwarts... the catch was that he refused to bring the boy in to sample any wands. The end result was a lot of huffing and puffing and trying to figure out how to find the boy's wand without the boy. If he succeeded it would be a first—and last—in his long career.

"I am getting too old for this. It's impossible... the wand must choose the owner. A load of bollocks is what it is..." the white-haired elderly wizard muttered, shuffling around a bend and pulling out another case when he heard the young girl’s voice. He groaned softly to himself, if only at his own lack of presentation; he remembered the days when he’d be right at the door with a welcoming—and slightly creepy—smile on his face. He always seemed to know when he’d be getting a visit, but after everything that happened… well, he wasn’t always as alert as he used to be.

“Ah, I’m coming, I’m coming.” He said in that slightly amused scholarly voice, heading towards the front of the store with the case still firmly in his hands. When he finally appeared, clad in black suede robes and a bowtie, his smoky eyes were back to their old glittery form, as he was always—and forever would be—thrilled to make and deliver wands to their rightful owners. His gaze landed on the young girl first, barely much taller than the desk. “Oi, they’re making ‘em smaller and smaller every year, aren’t they? Prettier, too.” he smiled and winked playfully, knowing all the old tricks to help ease the first year students, especially the little girls. “Well, now, who do we have here…”

He finally looked up at the silent parents and nodded politely, glad that they seemed to have the common sense to let the girl do it on her own. Although… his gaze drifted to the female and stopped, that old familiar smile gracing his face. “Ms. Marland, my how you’ve grown. I can only hope that this will go better than it did when you were a girl.” Turning back to Raine he added, “Almost cut my arm right off, that one. As long as you don’t do that, we’ll be fine.”

“Now… why not? Why don’t you try this one?” he said, placing the box that he’d been clutching on the counter in front of her. “Go ahead, give it a shot…”

Raine's eyes widened in anticipation as she heard him call from somewhere in the back of the store. She suddenly became quite shy as he entered the room, even with his gleaming smile she seemed a bit nervous for the whole ordeal, what if there was no wand for her? What if she really wasn't meant to be a witch after all.

She soon forgot all of her worries as he commented on her height and complimented her, causing her to blush with a slight giggle. As he looked toward the door she turned her head as well to see her parents standing proudly in the door frame.

“Ms. Marland, my how you’ve grown. I can only hope that this will go better than it did when you were a girl. Almost cut my arm right off, that one. As long as you don’t do that, we’ll be fine." Raine giggled once again as he placed a box in front of her to which all of her worries returned.

Hands shaking, she reached out to grasp the wand and held it nervously in front of her, suddenly frozen in fear. She looked to Ollivander and then back to her mum and dad. Her mum smiled encouragingly and moved her hand motioning for Raine to give the wand a wave. She then glued her eyes to the wand and with butterflies flitting about in her stomach she gave it a swish and closed her eyes waiting for the disaster...but there wasn't one. She cautiously opened her eyes once more and looked to the other three occupants in the room and smiled brightly.

"Does this mean it's mine?" She said, beaming with joy, and turned toward Ollivander. "What kind is it?" She asked just as her mother questioned "How much?"
