Eyes the color of dried moss settled on the silent figure beside the hearth, a tall, slender man in his late twenties. Red hair so dark it almost seemed black framed a narrow face with high cheek bones, his gaze was fixed on some distant point beyond the flames. At first it seemed Samhir would not comment at all, lost to his own musings. Then the hunter finally shrugged. "Rumors, nothing more." Confidence swung in his words, the impression betrayed by his sudden, uneasy shifting. Turning he studied the elder sitting before piles of brittle parchment and old tomes, just to let his attention settle on the dancing red again a moment later. "You should know better than to believe everything said, old friend." The aging chronicler smirked. "There is little else to concern myself with, Samhir. The days in which this town had a story to tell are long past." Over fifty years had the annalist recorded the history of Paarah, had kept a tally of the city's births and deaths, had noted major events in books only he he would ever open. When the population started to dwindle so had noteworthy events. These days half of the once thriving mining town lay abandoned, the rest struggled with survival. The older man rose a shoulder. "And I believe this one to be true." "How so, Theran?" "Whisper has it, that Zhan's son wont survive the winter. The girl he married after the demise of his first wife is barren and the mine does not produce as much ore as it used to. Nor is there anyone willing to buy what he does produce." Theran closed the tome he had been reading with a soft thud. "Times are bad and they are much worse here than even in other cities. Zhan and his family might leave. If he does others will follow. What will we do then?" Samhir's answer was a single snort, an expression of his frustration. The fire warmed the small chamber well enough and still, the man could not help but shiver. Of the few families remaining within the city proper, the miner's was certainly one of the most affluent. They had been among the first settlers and had claimed a seat in the city council ever since. Was Zhan to leave Paarah, no one could say what would happen. "Eventually you could sway him with the hand of your sister?" "What about his current wife?" "Should the tatter prove true, he will leave her as certain as spring follows winter." Again the younger man snort. Times were hard for everyone, not just for Zhan and his ilk. Lately merchants had shun the dangerous travel towards the mountains and the villages resting within its shadow. Instead they remained near the plains, the larger cities were better business was to be made. Life in Paarah had grown harder since, more desperate. His own stores were full of pelts he had meant to sell before winter, but no trader had come before snow fall and now the cold season was nearing its end. With more vigor than he had intended Samhir pushed to his feet. "I will think about it," he said dismissively as he fished for his cloak. His father had considered the very same when he had still been alive and the hunter had to agree that his sister was a woman much to the old miner's liking. Young and with distinct womanly features she presented valuable in a time where most cities struggled to keep their population at a constant level. At the same turn Samhir had never harbored much love for neither Zhan nor his family and he resented the idea of seeing Ashara at his side. He shook his head, following Tharen when the older man headed for the oak wood door at the other side of the room. "What are you up to?," the chronicler asked while leading his guest out of the library and down the corridor. "It is to late for hunting, or is it?" The old man almost seemed curious. For all the time he had lived he rarely left his study. "Its too late for hunting," Samhir agreed. "Meeting with someone at the Red Falcon Inn. A group of merchants left Hatal a fortnight ago, but has not yet arrived here." "How...?" "Messenger bird." Bot men fell silent. Hatal, a village even smaller than Paarah, lay only six days toward the south. Nine when one traveled without a horse. The road connecting both settlements were bad and worse in winter, yet it was impossible to get lost with it. Not even decades of neglect had eradicated the ancient cobblestones from the face of the earth. "Marauders again?" "Would say some mountain beasts are more likely be held responsible." Stepping out into the streets the huntsman offered the other man a nod. "It was good to see you and let me know if there is anything you need." |
