((It makes you wonder if Nevio is ever going to like Soma XD )) Soma kept his hand tightly around the little girl's for a moment to reassure her that he was trustworthy. He let his grip slacken a bit after that. He wasn't kidding when he said she reminded him a bit of his little sister when she was her age. Despite his job and living on base, he'd come home often especially when she was younger since his father had his duties as the cake master in the local community center and their mother traveled a lot. His other siblings would often be busy and so he was tasked with taking care of her when everyone else was gone. She was smart and always curious about the world around her (which was amusing since she was just as cute as a little angel but had the tendency to curse people out in a manner she learned from her stylish older sister) but Soma was no idiot and his record was such that his sister had never gotten away from him once. His hand could sense minute changes in her temperament through temperature and unconscious hand movements so he always knew when to grab onto her arm because she was about to bolt. So this little girl didn't pose a problem. She hadn't had the opportunity to learn the same tricks his adorable sister did. So he merely appreciated the moment to recapture his adorable baby sister's youth through the lady's adorable little reminder. "I'm Soma Cruz, what's your name?" he asked. "Nellie..." she replied, still staring up at him. Her mother cleared her throat and gave Nervio, who had approached to look at her like she was going to run at him, and odd look. "Oh, this is Nevio. He's my roommate. New roommate. He's a really nice guy but we're both sort of lost," Soma explained. "I see..." the mother said in a tone that implied she didn't see at all. Her red-manicured hand wrapped tightly around the wrist of her boy who seemed more interested in the small gaming device he managed to play with just his left. "Nina Valero. I'm glad to help." And then she proceeded to ignore the other two as she set off immediately toward the crosswalk. Soma gestured for Nevio to follow as he swung his and Nellie's connected hands. She smiled finally, a little over her initial shock-stare at Soma and skipped to keep up with his stride. "Sanna!" she laughed. Soma didn't correct her. "Do you like games? My brother really does." "Um no...the last game I played was Sorry," Soma admitted. Her face fell a bit. "Oh...it's just. You're dressed like a character in a game he always plays. He never lets me," she reflected, jutting out her bottom lip adorably. Nellie turned her eyes back to Nevio curiously. "Sanna, is that your boyfriend or your brother?" she queried. The agent flushed and grabbed on her hand to try and get the girl to face front. "Umm. He's my roommate." "But mom says that people can't live together without being lovey dovey or related,' Nellie countered. Apparently she had concluded from Soma's ridiculously girly face that he surely must be one (despite the voice and lack of boobs to clue her in) . He, being Soma, didn't get this. "He's pretty, like a prince," Nellie started, turning her eyes once again to the man with the computer bag. She clearly was into princesses by her appearance. It was the fashion lately, but she'd taken it to a unique extreme with her tutu dress with a big, sappy picture of a blonde Disney princess on both sides, her crown bag, glittery flats, and tiara headband. "He is," Soma agreed. It turned out the pair was closer to a grocery store than Soma had originally banked on. It was two street turns and another crosswalk later that the supermarket came into sight. |

((I warmed up to Soma in like 5 minutes so Nevio shouldn’t be able to resist xD Even he can’t stay mean and rude forever to the cute idiot that is Soma~ Nevio: Yes I can < <)) The mother that was of questionable effectiveness thanks to her lack of will to pummel Soma and Nevio into the ground for approaching her with her kids in hand introduced herself. Nevio still had his eyes on the girl that Soma was holding but he moved them back onto the woman that she popped out of. His roommate did him a favor and took some of the work out of the out of the blue name exchange so all he had to do was acknowledge the new woman. “Thank you for your help Miss Valero.” The geek spoke up. He didn’t even bother to try and crack a smile, he knew from experience that it came across forced and fake and more often than not got him into more trouble than simply telling off the other person would. Nevio got his thanks in right before she pulled out ahead of them and started leading the way to the building full of food, coupons, and acne ridden teenagers complaining about how much their short life sucked as they cleaned up vomit painted bathrooms. Soma was the first one to follow the woman, leaving Nevio to follow quietly behind him and the girl, right where he wanted to be. The amount of people around him thin and thickened at random, letting him put less thought into not bumping into another human being and just looking around. Combined with the brain power he initially put into looking for the grocery store he was free to let his mind wander into thought about his next computer upgrade. He was just making a note about where he needed to go to get all of his parts now that he was miles away from his usual place when he felt a new pair of eyes on him. Nevio looked around him before looking in front of him, catching the princess with the mutant hands looking at him. Glaring and failing at that miserably he just took a few steps back in case she got any ideas about trying to touch him. Kids, they just knew that Nevio hated their little fingers but couldn’t do anything beyond it besides run away or shoo them off with a broom. The techie didn’t have a broom on him and he needed food so he couldn’t run off, so she basically had him corner. Her attention was taken away by Soma and luckily he kept her busy until they finally got to the supermarket. Nevio wasn’t all that off with his quest to find it, he just got distracted by Soma’s appearance and took a wrong turn. “I’m going to go on ahead.” Nevio passed by the blonde and alerted him of his moving in front of the pack, jogging to the inviting building and sliding towards the automatic doors that opened a bit too slow, causing him to bump into them as they were still together and fall to the ground. He sat there for a second and checked to see if his computer was still whole in its bag, getting up when he did so he could grab a cart and head right for the produce aisle. |

((Sorry for the delay. The PS3, it had me, and I also had to see my cousins XD )) Soma wondered what he could find of interest in the grocery store. It felt like completing a long, drawn out quest by just visiting the location and he hadn't given much thought to what he might need in the coming weeks. Soma didn't do much which consequently meant that he required only the bare minimum to function : exercise, a place to sleep, a few books now and then, a daily shower, and something to eat. He had soap, there was food already in the house, and he'd been given his sister's collection of some adventure-something-or-other in a fantasy world to help pass the time. What else was there to acquire? But at least there was Nellie. She had turned out to be quite the find as the little girl was absurdly chatty. Soma had no idea what she was talking about but from the way her nearby brother rolled his eyes at every other sudden topic change, that might actually be normal. "So I went over to Kimmy's house and she has this huuuuge dog. He's like a golden retriever and his hair was soooo long that they wanted to shave it. For the summer, you know? But I was all 'awww, I wanted to see it braided and done up like in the grooming show we watched the other day and then Kimmy went 'yeah! We totally should!' So we waited until her mom got busy and then we went outside to her doggie with all sortsa stuff, like scrunchies, and rubber bands, and little ribbons for bows, and her doggie brush...and by the time we'd finished he looked SO CUTE but her mom started yelling at us for ruining the doggies' pride but I dunno what that even is. Do you think I could style your hair? It looks almost like the doggies!" Soma had no choice but to listen to every word and by this time all he'd gathered was the pink ranger is awesome, Ariel and Belle are the best princesses, dogs needed to have their hair done for the summer, and Nellie wanted to work on his. He shook his head but quickly spoke again before she could get too upset. "I can't let you mess with my hair or my mom'll have my head after you've finished it. But I'm sure there are plenty of people I know on base who'd be more than happy to let you practice." The mother turned her head at that, the woman's expression an amusing mix of interest and horror. "Are you military?" she asked. "Uh, yes. Well, sort of. My mother works at Kelley and she used to take me to work with her all the time. I still visit off and on so I know plenty of people there." "Nellie I doubt anyone's going to let you work on their hair. You should stick to barbie," her mother said, effectively ending the topic before the girl could seriously dream of her own armed, militant, and fabulous troupe. They entered the store and Soma moved to the right when he saw Nevio coming out of the corner of his eye to give the man proper room to enter while free of his roommate in the personal space department. "Umm...should I wait for you out here?" he called, as the sudden opening of the doors and assault of people and colors inside threatened to send him right to the shadows for observation before he was overstimulated. |

Nevio caught Soma’s voice before the doors that let him in slid shut. He back tracked just enough so he was standing on the carpet that triggered the slow moving gateway to food and home supplies. “You came all the way here just to stand outside and wait for me?” He questioned slowly through the people that were walking in and out of the store, letting go of the basket so he could maneuver himself around the touching range of the other supermart patrons. “You could have stayed at the apartment to do that. Go shop, buy some stuff that you like, meet me back here in 46 minutes.” He didn’t stick around to ponder out loud the sense it didn’t make for his new blonde roommate to leave the house and not partake in why they left. Either Soma would shop or stick to his absurd idea to wait outside but no matter what he would be waiting for Nevio when he was done. With that in mind he shot off towards the produce section once again, leaving his roomie far behind to do whatever came to his Golden Retriever mind. Raw foods were his mother’s thing. She wasn’t a very conventional vegan, in fact in all good consciousness she couldn’t be called one since she enjoyed the daily ritual of basically inhaling bacon at the breakfast table and a hamburger a day, but she loved anything that could be eaten straight from the ground—in theory—and turned her son onto the habit. It was way he had a reasonably cheery air aura around him when normally he could make plants wither, tossing in a bag of baby carrots into his basket with a happy whistle. He went about bagging up veggies, six to a bag, 3 in some cases, the only odd number he could stand, before moving onto fruits. Unlike most people he could stand vegetables but fruits weren’t on his good list. Too sweet. Once his basket accumulated a large amount of vegetables and a negligible size of the sweet stuff Nevio set to wander the rest of the store in the…20 minutes he had left to shop before catching up with the dog. Time flies. He muttered as he mapped a path to the dairy section, grabbing little knickknacks along the way that appealed to him. Around the time he got to the lunch meat and cheese lined up against the refrigerated wall he got that hair raising feeling of having all of his footsteps watched. Nevio didn’t put much thought into it until he made his way to the practically deserted electronics section and was still dealing with it. “Som--” His roommate was the first culprit but when he turned around his eyes landed on a slender woman with soft red hair, one that didn’t ring to him as familiar. “…can I help you?” “You don’t recognize me?” She asked quietly, navy blue dress swaying around her as she stepped closer. Nevio took a step back and shook his head. “…Do you work with my mother?” It wouldn’t be the first time he ran into a porn star that his mother took under her wing as an amateur, meaning lots of trips for dinner at his house and getting a chance to traumatize the child. The woman giggled and shook her head. “I’ve never been much interested in the adult industry.” She knew his mother but didn’t work with her and knew him. “Are you sure you don’t remember me?” “I’m going to go…” Nevio said, slowly turning his basket around before bolting towards the checkout at top speed. He was made very suddenly uncomfortable and was tripping all over himself to get out of the store as soon as possible. |

Soma had hoped that his roommate would approve of his plan to just stand around outside and wait for him. It was clear that he didn't want Soma following him around and operating in their usual manner of distance would prove rather difficult unless Soma scaled the various shelves in the store and he'd likely get into some trouble with the owners if he did that. So following Nevio, which was what he really wanted to do to build optimal comraderie from the start was out. He released Nellie's hand when her mother suddenly lifted her up and placed her in the cart itself. the girl was a little too tall to be sitting right up front, but her mother rightfully feared what would happen if she had to use a hand to push the cart and only one awkwardly placed appendage to keep her daughter in place. The girl gave her mother a reproachful look and her giant brown eyes threatened with the fury of black clouds in an oncoming storm. Nellie's maternal unit was far too familiar with her daughter to do more than place a finger to her lips and then bring up her middle and index finger on the other hand as a strange, archaic signing method to what Nellie was supposed to do. Oddly enough, it seemed to work. "Thank you for walking her here. I usually am pretty wary when it comes to strange men around my kids but..." she laughed at the physical reaction of horror Soma had concerning strange men and children. "You're pretty different on all fronts. And you're from a military family. My father and grandaddy were all military men, so is my older brother so I'm glad I could help out." Soma brightened at that, his cerulean eyes took on an heir of recognition now that she had verbally crossed onto familiar grounds. "Oh. What's your maiden name? Perhaps I know them." "Cortez. My daddy is Jeffrey Cortez and my grandfather was Emanuel." "Oh. Sergeant class, with the Red Shark unit. I don't know your grandfather but I'm certain your father's a great man," Soma explained happily. The woman opened her mouth, speechless as she didn't actually think the young man she'd casually mentioned her family's name to would know exactly who her father was, much less his rank. "What did you say you did again?" she queried. "Me? I uh...?" Great. Someone had asked. Thankfully it was someone he wouldn't be commonly associating with, but the fact that she'd pressed him was unexpected and it caught the young man completely by surprise. "I...work at a daycare service," Soma amended quickly. He'd glanced far behind the woman's head and in an instant said the first thing that came in sight and sounded occupational : a local day care guide that was hanging off the magazine rack in a precarious position, dangling off the ground by the grace of a single page caught in the metal of the rack. "How lovely! No wonder you're so good with Nellie. What center do you work at? If it meets our standards I'd love to change Nellie's! The teacher there is a real bitch about lateness." "Huh?" Soma started. "Oh. Where I work. I'm between centers right now. I just moved after all..." "Oh," the mother's face fell but she dug into her large mountain of a purse an instant later. "Well here's my business card. I work from home but since I'm a buyer I have to use daycare services, and it's good for them. They learn how to get along with their peers. When you've found a place to work be sure to call me!" And with that she left, leaving a small white piece of cardstock in Soma's hand and pushing a cart with a very unhappy little girl sucking on her ringpop with spoiled-brat fervor. Soma sighed when they were finally out of sight, happy that his story had worked as well as it did. He glanced at the giant, looming mob pushing their way through the aisles where the children and elderly had to tightly grasp their caretakers and canes so as not to be pushed aside and forgotten. Maybe he didn't want to buy something after all. It was already going to be 38.5 minutes until Nevio showed up again and it would take Soma that long just to get to the other end of the produce section. So he waited at the front, taking stock of the people rushing in and out of the supermarket with a greater amount of joy than he thought possible. It was people like this that he worked and fought, so they could continue doing such awe-inspiring things like using the little machines to produce small pieces of goo and paper to stick on themselves while their parent spoke in their electric receivers and yelled at their husbands to get the car before they bowled them over with the cart. Humanity was a sea of wonder. |

Nevio could hear it, the frantic thumping of heels to smooth floors treading just behind him as he maneuvered his heavy basket towards the line of registers in the front. It pushed him to move faster still, dancing between the other humans in the store so he could avoid being touched by anyone and forced into a loop of continuous contact or a panic attack. He narrowly avoided mowing down old men walking at 2 feet per day and stepping on little brats that got away from their womb donors to get to a free register. The busty teen behind it eyed him and the woman he cut off in the process of getting to her while she was free and after some gum chewing decided that she didn’t care who she rang up first. She probably came to regret her decision to take the brunette as he rushed her along, attempting to hurry her scanning and bagging as he kept looking for that woman that was chasing him for whatever reason. Nevio couldn’t get an eyeful of her but she wouldn’t stay gone for long. There were only so many places that he could go with a full basket of food that wouldn’t set off alarms or start a much bigger chase. Deciding that the teen was moving just too slow for him Nevio slid behind the register and started to help with the bagging, tossing food into plastic and the plastic back into the basket, cutting his time standing there in half. He quickly charged his food to his crippling credit and got behind his basket again, running towards the door. In his haste to get the hell away from those heels he nearly forgot about his new puppy roommate, not that he didn’t stick out like a sore thumb standing at the front looking like the lost dog that he was. “You! Come on!” Nevio backtracked to where Soma was standing, eyes darting around the room and refusing to settle on the blonde resulting in a few confused people turning in his direction. “Not you!” the brunette quickly clarified, jabbing his head at the blonde he came with. “Nevio dammit! Wait a moment!” Nevio cringed at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, pushing his cart through the exit. “I’m being followed and if this chick catches me it’s your head puppy.” He stressed before starting towards the parking lot, more than happy with taking the basket home with him and returning it at some point during the next five years. He just had to get away from that woman. It wasn’t even remotely possible that Nevio slept with her or dated her, so as far as he was concerned she was a stalker. Stalkers equaled bad. Being a bad person himself Nevio knew he needed to be as far away from bad people as possible. |

Soma waited and waited and waited until he was sure that he must have mistaken the time that Nevio said they were going to meet again at the entrance. He'd counted down using his internal clock with a bit of help from the much larger one that was sitting on the desk of the nearby bank outlet inside the grocery store. He found it a little on the odd side that there was a cubby in a store with so many things already specifically dedicated to people storing their money. Did they not just take it and use in the store anyway? It would seem odd to promote savings, if the sign was to be believed, amidst such splendor. But the clock was rather helpful. He could be lazy. The blonde turned his head left and right when he heard some sort of a commotion at the registers and smiled in happy recognition when the good looking brunette turned out to be Nevio, his new roommate and friend. How fortuitous that the other man seemed to make a large scene! It was much easier to spot him that way. Soma already remembered his face. He was debating whether or not to go and meet the other man when Nevio was suddenly off, pushing his prizes toward the door and right past Soma, who stepped fully back to keep the right distance. He half thought that Nevio was choosing to ignore him because he wasn't the proper distance, only half, but apparently he did intend to allow the other man passage outside of the store in tandem with his purchases after all. Soma smiled and fell into step at a reasonable pace...except Nevio wasn't walking at one so he quickly fell behind. He caught up, lengthening his stride, just in time to hear the other man say something about a puppy and a woman who was following him. He narrowed one of his eyes in a disarmingly adorable manner and then turned to glance at a frantic looking woman who was trying to get his roommate's attention. "So you don't know her, Nevio? That's odd. She knows your name. Are you sure you haven't been introduced before? I can stop her if you'd like..." He didn't want to do anything too drastic since these were all civilians, but a normal method would probably be enough. Thus without even seeing if the other man wanted assistance, Soma immediately dove back into the crowd of store enterers and leavers, blending with the flow of bodies until he came up behind the woman in question. The young man then happily clamped his hand down on her shoulder and gave the woman who was apparently some sort of deranged foe (his best conclusion) or maybe a fellow door-opener (second best!) a 10000 watt smile. "Excuse me, miss. You seem to know Nevio but from what I gather he doesn't want you following me around and I think he's going to behead a puppy if you catch up with him so how about you just tell me what you want from him? I'd be happy to help in any way that doesn't result in canine homicide." |

“There’s an easy explanation for that.” Nevio claimed as he pushed his basket back in the direction that they came from, eyeing how many bags he had in his cart and if it was really worth it to push the thing back through the city to their apartment building. “She is a stalker, she is following me. I don’t know how or why, but she is.” Calculating the weight of all his food and how much the plastic containers could take he decided that he could carry a majority of them just fine and avoid his random fan if Soma carried one or two. As much as he worried about if his new dog would be able to handle such a simple task it didn’t look as though he had much of a choice if he wanted to get home and away from that woman. “Now, grab one of these--” Nevio looked up from his basket to give a half-hearted attempt to ask for some help from his special roommate and was surprised to find him gone. He didn’t forget about the distance Soma promised to keep from him to prevent physical contact but he didn’t expect him to suddenly up that separation to a mile. While he was working on the mental distribution of his bags he sort of shut out what the blonde was saying to him so he didn’t know if he dismissed himself somewhere or if he gotten himself lost in the crowd of people trying to get in and out of the supermart. Dammit, he’s going to get me caught. The techie cursed, reaching into the basket and starting to pull out bags. Either the blonde was going to catch up with him or he was going to walk home alone. Meanwhile said stalker finally managed to get her competent teenage lackey to work a little more competently for her, paying for her few items and jogging towards the exit so she could get to Nevio before he was lost in the crowd of shoppers. “He moves fast for a computer jockey.” She cursed under her breath when she got to the exit and wasn’t able to get a sign of him. Then again he was kind of a small guy…at the very least they were the same height when she was in heels, making it difficult to see above the people and get a glimpse at the brunette. Just as she resolved to keep going and plow through everyone until she knocked down the right guy some random hand touch her shoulder, making her flinch and look. Instinctively she squint to protect her retinas from burning as the man spoke to her. He knew Nevio! The brunette was planning to kill a puppy as well. Her eyes went wide at once. “Not my Yorkie Jade I hope.” She said, biting her lip and tightening her hand around her purchases. “Please Mr. Smiley Blonde, Nevio is a friend of mine, he just doesn’t recognize me. Can you tell him Matthew Colm426 is looking for him? He’ll know who that is. Please?” To counter the bright smile the woman put on her best damsel in distress look, lifting her hand and touching the appendage on her shoulder. “It would help me out a great deal.” |

Soma hoped that this woman, if she was a bad guy who was looking for Nevio for nefarious purposes, wouldn't be as good at CQC as the last few ladies he'd had to deal with. Soma was a great agent and he was agile, a crack shot, and wonderful with anything to render someone unconscious or without the use of an arm or a leg...but he royally sucked at hand to hand. He just couldn't handle being close enough to someone long enough to fight them effectively. Truth be told, due to the years and years of breeding for a specific purpose, the Ramsey women weren't exceptionally strong. They were stronger than the average person and could bring any soft weight trainer to their knees, but when it came to the baddies who worked day and night on having spectacular punching skills, they tended to fall a little short. Besides, if he didn't stay slender then Soma would be out of a job. His work was espionage, not brawling. Women though tended to be a particular problem for Soma because they had terrible things like heels and claws. And he felt sort of bad about fighting them more than normal villainous types because half the time they just looked like nice people. This happened with men too, but baddies so infrequently looked like good guys that he usually didn't give it much of a second thought. So far be it for Soma to underestimate a woman or expect her to not take care of herself. If this nice lady was going after Nevio and hiding some sort of terrible secret then he'd have to keep his guard up, even if she was giving him a really, really, really polite expression as she told him she was looking for his new roommate. She even had a puppy! What villains kept puppies? But he took in the information she'd bestowed upon him and gave the woman an uncertain look. "Your name is Matthew? Odd, you don't really look like one...but I suppose if you're not going to go after Nevio then I can do something simple like that. But please, don't follow me or else I might get a little aggravated. I really don't like being chased and I think the same thing goes for my new friend. He doesn't even want anyone coming within two feet of him, can you imagine? He must have some terrible allergies," Soma mused. He realized he would need to get moving and follow Nevio's trail and so he granted the possibly evil woman one last polite smile before he removed his hand from her shoulder and set off into the crowd. The young agent found himself outside the store in record time and he glanced all around looking for the telltale signs of Nevio. He traced his way back in the general direction they'd come from until he caught sight of the now familiar computer bag. He fell into step beside his new roommate, the proper distance away, and glanced curiously at the shopping cart. "Are you allowed to take those home? I never knew.
