Jey'Tsu Pacing in agitation, his green skin seeming to absorb the lights that flickered through the night, Jey'Tsu cocked his ears toward the muted conversation that was occurring in his people's antechamber. He knew what topic the clan's elders were debating, and the outcome of this discussion worried him greatly. Jey'Tsu, only son of Amarani and Tel'Ath, was eavesdropping. Oh, he knew it was highly frowned upon, but his people would not survive a war with the humans that had landed several moon cycles previously. Although not even a full revolution of the suns had passed since the aliens landed on their planet, asking for peace and hospitality, already their numbers had grown far beyond what the Talarian people had expected. Thus, he listened to find out what the decision would be. There had been an initial treaty with the humans; one that permitted them to clear an area of precious forest in which to build their houses and such. Personally, Jey'Tsu didn't understand why the pale creatures had not wanted their homes built in the trees, as his own people had, but the elders had explained that the aliens were accustomed to a different way of living, and it would be unfair to ask them to change their thinking so radically. It was why the treaty had been drawn up between the two peoples; so that the humans would eventually have to learn to live with life on Etara, rather than destroying it. Jey'Tsu had been assigned to protect the perimeter of what would, eventually, be the human city, and he had found them to be a resilient, intelligent race, even if they had some odd ideas about the native forest and animals on Etara. He had enjoyed the few talks he'd had with the pale creatures, and had liked the way they'd oohed and aahed over his wings, and the way his skin would glow at night. Now, fearing that the humans were growing to quickly and anticipating an attack from the new colony, the Talarian elders had met and were trying to decide what to do. Jey'tsu's heart skipped a beat as the ground shook and the drums began to call, signaling the end of the meeting. Taking his place with his fellow people, the young dragonling raised his aqua colored gaze to seek out the figures who stood on a raised dais above them. At the uproar that came from the gathered crowd, Tal'Ath, Jey'Tsu's father and Clan Chief of the Talarian peoples, raised his hands in a bid for silence and called, "Amani, watu!" At the authoritative tone, the noise stopped and all eyes focused on their leader. "Imekuwa liwe. Kigeni itakuwa ruhusa kukaa. Kama bado hawajapata kuvunjwa mkataba wetu, hivyo hatutaweza kufanya vita juu yao." There was another outcry at the chief's words, and he allowed it to rise higher and higher in volume, listening to the cries of, "Na nini ya misitu?!" and "Hao kuharibu nyumba zetu!" Finally, Tel'Ath raised his hands again and the mournful sounds died away. His face somber and his voice grave, the clan leader spoke again. "Sisi si kibali wao kuchukua ni yetu. Sisi kukutana na wazee wao kuona kama mkataba unaweza kufikiwa. Kama mtu hawezi kupatikana, sisi kama taifa, lazima kuja uamuzi. Kwa sasa, mambo ni closed. Twende asubuhi." Turning away from his audience, Tel'Ath descended the great spiral staircase that led from the dais down to the common ground below. Jey'Tsu waited for him, long fingers flexing and bending in his impatience. The crowd had begun to disperse when his father finally joined him. "Mwana wangu." he greeted, resting a broad hand on Jey'Tsu's shoulder. "Baba yangu," responded the youth, placing his hand on his chest and inclining his head to show respect. Straightening, he said, "A hotuba kusonga. Je, watu kukubali maneno yenu, mimi ajabu?" Standing to his full height, Tel'Ath was an imposing figure; his mouth straight and unbending, and his eyes those of a warrior. However, being the chief's son, Jey'Tsu saw the weariness beneath the fierceness, and he worried. "Nimekuwa waliochaguliwa kama wakuu," he finally said, his deep voice commanding. "Watu kufanya kama mimi kuuliza." Jey'Tsu, hearing the tiredness in his father's voice, only nodded and stepped back, signaling an end to the conversation. "Mimi kwenda kuangalia," he said quietly. "Ni usiku wangu doria ya misitu." Out of respect, he waited for the answering nod from his father and chief before turning to lead the antechamber. Most of the Talarian people were going to bed and tucking their families in, but a few, like Jey'Tsu, were night hunters. They patrolled through the forest, watching for beasts that might try to attack their homes, and, if a successful kill was made, the clan would eat well the following night. Taking nothing with him but his bow, a quiver full of lethally sharp arrows, and his twin bladed hunting knives, Jey'Tsu set out into the forest, immediately blending into his surroundings and all but disappearing from sight. Like most of his kind, he could fly; but unless there was a need for it, he preferred to keep to the trees; a silent and nearly invisible predator. Translations: *"Peace, People! It has been decided. The aliens will be permitted to stay. As of yet, they have not broken our treaty, so we will not make war upon them." *"And what of the forest?!" *"They will destroy our home!" *"We will not permit them to take what is ours. We will meet with their elders to see if an agreement can be reached. If one can not be found, we, as a people, must come to a decision. For now, the matter is closed. We go at dawn." *"My son." *"My father. A moving speech. Will the people accept your terms, I wonder?" *"I have been chosen as chief. The people will do as I ask." *"I go to watch. It is my night to patrol the forest." ((They know a little English from speaking with the humans the past few months, but they still converse in their native tongue. Let me know if it's too much to keep reading the translation, and I'll just write what they're saying in English.)) |

( oo... Was that the language spoken in Avatar? I only know how to read English and/or French, so I wouldn't know whatever this language was from Japanese, or any other language while reading. I'm glad that you're putting so much effort into this, but I'd be easier on me to see the topic mainly in English. Keep some of it in the Talarian tongue though, since sooner or later, my guy will end up using a translator that wouldn't be able to translate every last word.) Erindale, who was called 'Erin' more often than not, stood at the back of the debriefing room of the Titan Class colony pod transport [i}Queen Anne[/i]. A genetically created super-soldier, a hold-over from the aborted second invasion of Pandora, Erin needed no grand speeches or proclamations about the importance of the human race. He'd been created to fight for humans, and now his new duty was to protect them as they tried to make a new home on a different world. Recalling that part of his history, he remembered how the second invasion was aborted when a sudden onset of global climate changes completely melted the arctic and antarctic ice caps, as well as sudden changes in the weather caused the homeworld of Terra to become unlivable, prompting a search for a new homeworld. Of course, Pandora was considered, but the last confrontation there had ended quite violently, thus a new planet with hopefully no knowledge of humanities mistake on Pandora was required. Planetary Catalog V6T-COGS section 7, quadrant 37 of the Exploration Commission had revealed a new world, near Pandora, that proved to be closer to Earth, and also had a breathable atmosphere without the use of bio-masks. Cursory scans revealed the presence of a great number of indigenous creatures roughly the same size as humans living on the surface, which meant that the planet was already populated. Diplomats were dispatched, entire continents being evacuated en masse while the diplomats continued in their attempts to secure a number of sites for humans to inhabit on the new world. Other planets were also explored, as well as moons, asteroids, and the like to find somewhere that would be able to house humanity as the new homeworld. Finally, the diplomats returned with the information that humanity had been allowed to live among the Talarians, the species that lived on one of the more hospitable worlds, and brought with them the treaties that were made in order to allow for the colonization of the new world. Needless to say, most humans weren't used to having to deal with anyone else on equal terms, and there was quite a bit of grumbling about dealing with a less advanced race just to find a peaceful solution to a problem that threatened an entire species. Bitterness aside, the treaty meant that humanity, at least some of it, could begin to colonize the new world, and a few moons that had proved capable of supporting human life with minimal terra-forming needed. Waking up as the debriefing ended, Erin left the debriefing room, his presence there an annoyance to him. He already knew the mission parameters, and why it was important enough to train him in the Talarian language and customs when he'd been created as a soldier. Not that he minded the new duties, it beat constant target practice any day. It just bored Erin, having to wait all this time before getting to taste a non-recycled atmosphere, to taste real, planet grown food, and to feel the earth beneath ones feet again. Erin was a spacer by creation, but he always preferred a planetscape to a starscape any day, or night, of the weak. Returning to his quarters, Erin heard the curious wurbling and chirping of his pet. A slightly draconic creature, bright red-orange scales that glowed with neon purple markings during the darkness. The creature set up a series of wurbles and chirps as it realized who had entered, and flapped it's wings to sit upon the dresser nearest the cabin doors and stretched out its neck to rub against Erin's neck. "Hey there Wrexley, has the scent gotten any better?" Wrexley cocked his head, confused, as its own sense of smell wasn't very good, being better at seeing movement, colors, and hearing, than at smelling. An artificially created pet modeled off of a natural born curiosity from the Sol System outermost planet, almost completely devoid of light from the sun. The original species couldn't survive any sort of light outside of the lower infrared spectrum, but Wrexley was gene-tailored to be able to survive well into the ultra-violet frequencies. Wrexley finally gave the statement up as mere noise, not being the most intelligent creature even with all the genetics to increase its intelligence, and stretched its neck out to be petted, and Erin obliged with a few strokes under its chin, down to the base of its neck. Walking to the mirror, the creatures head followed him a good two feet before flapping to the nearby bunk by the mirror, the creature a good 7 feet long from snout to tail. A beautiful, if unusual looking creature, it was meant as a companion rather than as a fighting creature, akin to canines, except that creatures like Wrexley tended to be aggressive towards any and all vermin. Such is why they made for popular guards for grain silos, as the creatures couldn't digest human grains, but outside of that, they had a very non-discerning pallet and would eat almost anything you fed them without getting sick. Turning the faucet on, a function which Wrexley always found fascinating to watch, Wrexley made a low cooing noise as the water poured out, earning a splash from Erin, earning Erin an irate cry as the creature immediately started to groom itself. "Damn, I hope we get there soon, Wrexley, this place is too cramped for me, I need to see some real trees, not those bushes that pass for trees on this place." Wrexley didn't stop grooming itself, but it did utter a rare growl, a noise of agreement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Nine months later, the Anne entered Talarian space, entered breaking orbit, then descended through the atmosphere along with four other transports that headed for their own destinations on different sides of the planet. A couple cruisers turned their guns to cover the transports, mainly to keep an eye out for wayward cometary debris that might endanger the transports. Other than that, the cruisers paid no further attention to the transports, which were now securely within the jurisdiction of the Talarian Elders now, as they made their way to their own landing sites. Strapped into his seat as the Anne approached the landing zone, it engaged the landing thrusters at the precise moment needed, flatting what grass grew in the clearing set aside for the behemoth transport. As the transport finally settled down, the landing created a slight tremor as it landed, though the pilot had set her down as gently as he could, the transport still weighed some 300 metric tons standard, cargo notwithstanding. Finally down, the transport began its next phase, showing the newest design that humanity had created for colony ships; it began to open up revealing the ship to be not just a transport for a colony, but also standing in as a colony in and of itself. The armored sides slowly pulled away from either side of the ship, and passengers began to disembark as the ship began offloading cranes, habitation domes, and a few armored mechs for protection. Erin himself piloted one of the construction mechs, modeled off the old military mechs used on Pandora, and began carrying many tons of wall supports as the automated maintenance machines immediately began the work of disassembling the transport and turning it into a colony. The ship was only meant to enter a planet and set up a small colony, not to leave a planet, hence why the engines weren't large enough to power the ship out of the atmosphere. Noting a group of Talarians approaching, Erin focused one of his loudspeakers in the direction of the Talarian group, sending them a computer voiced message to stay beyond the transport while the ship was offloading, then returned to his work. ...Or he would have returned to his work of offloading the transport, had the diplomat not called him over for speaking with the natives without introducing himself. Not in a good mood about having to work with civilian diplomats when a job needed to be done, Erindale walked over in his mech to the diplomat, and had the computer translate his words into the Talarian language, hoping the translator would be accurate without waiting for the diplomats say so. "First Lieutenant Erindale Aericscond, Second Expeditionary Force, currently assigned as security and construction personnel to colony A3. I'm a bit busy, but if the diplomat wants me to talk to you, I'll do so. I won't be getting out of my mech, since I'll be returning right back to my work once our talk is finished." The cockpit was clear, so the Talarians could see his slightly tanned skin quite easily, along with his blue eyes, which moved with a military wariness from the Talarians back to the forest edge, where his sensors didn't extend to. Hearing the diplomat reprimand him, Erindale turned his machine to face the diplomat. "When you're trained to do a job on a planet, and it takes nine months to reach a planet, you can get a bit aggravated when the trip to your newest jobsite seems to take too long. So you'll have to excuse me if I'm not in the best mood for a pep talk with a civilian. I've got a job to do back there, and the longer I have to stand around wiping your ass, the more irritated I get. So if you'll excuse me, I've received 30 messages from the construction team about why I'm behind my quota on offloading materials, so if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to work." All through his chat with the diplomat and his comments to the Talarians, Erin's machine moved in pace to his own body. When his hand reached up to work a kink out of his right arm, the machine responded in kind, the left arm moving along the right arm in the same motion. When Erin shrugged, so did the machine; old technology, but still impressive. As he walked back to the transport, leaving the diplomat flustered that his attempt to establish a good rapport with the Talarians by showing how friendly the construction workers were, Erin's annoyance showed in how the machine walked, the same way that Erin walked. The steps were slightly heavier, the body language showing clear signs of annoyance, which was easily explained by being cooped up in a transport for nine months, as Erin had explained. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roughly 10 hours later, Erin found himself drinking outside in the night air, seeing the myriad Anxili flitting about in the air, spreading their wings happily. Wrexley though, kept himself close to Erin as he drank, merely watching as its brethren flew about the colony, watching warily from its perch on Erin's shoulder. Having completed his portion of the unloading process, Erin sat near the colony walls, as section that hadn't been erected yet. It would take some weeks before the colony had been completely established, but the lights indicating the edge of the colony boundaries were well let, and the Anxili, the little draconic flying creatures, stayed well within that boundary, not wanting to risk their hides beyond the safety of the glowing lights. Seeing a group of Talarians coming along, Erin had seen the diplomat talking with some of the groups, who were obviously night hunters of some sort. Some hunting groups had already brought up some creatures that humanity had found it could eat, and likely this was just another hunting group attracted to the commotion of human construction. The colony ship was almost completely gutted now, only the outer hull remaining to form the colony walls left. Remembering the words of the diplomat earlier in the day, when he'd been too wound up from the stress of being stuck in a colony vessel, Erin stood up and wandered over to the newest group of Talarians to investigate the new human colony. Wrexley emitted a cry, immediately leaping from his soldier to hover next to him as Erin walked towards the Talarians, Erin put his translator in his ear, hoping that the language files had been updated enough that he could talk to them without his words being too garbled when his English was translated into the Talarian equivalent. "Hey, welcome to New Tokyo, I'm First Lieutenant Erindale Aericscond, something I can help you with?" Erin waited as the computer spoke in the Talarian tongue, himself trying to learn the language as he listened to it. (All right, I finished the post. In case the timeline was confusing, the colony ship landed in the mid-morning hours of the Talarian homeworld, and it's now firmly within the late evening hours of the planet where Erin is now. Anything you think I should add or edit to make it easier for your to reply?) |

((No, actually, it's Swahili. I couldn't find an English to Na'vi dictionary on line, so I went with this. It seemed appropriately foreign. ^_^)) Jey'Tsu had wandered around in the forest near his people's home for quite some time, not finding anything of interest to occupy himself. There were no kalim'bwa (wolves) or other creatures roaming nearby, and the Talarian had a fairly good idea of why. Everything in the forest - trees, creatures, and Talarians alike - was interested in the aliens who were attempting to settle on the planet; even the planet's energies were focused on the newcomers, which encouraged the creatures that inhabited land, water, and air to creep out and investigate. Knowing that he should be patrolling the human settlement's perimeter anyway, Jey'Tsu headed that way, deliberately avoiding the party of younger Talarians that had decided to go and appease their curiosity. As he approached the colony, he could hear one of the humans speaking to the younglings, greeting them and asking them if they needed help. He could hear the cries of awe and wonder over the human's ability to speak their language, but Jey'Tsu had spent enough time around the colony to know that it wasn't the human himself who was speaking, but something called a 'translator.' He wasn't entirely certain what that was, but it appeared to turn the Talarian language into human language, and vice versa so that the two races could effectively communicate. Shaking his head, the hunter crept quietly closer to see the human who had spoken. He didn't recognize the male, and he wasn't wearing the garb that he'd come to associate with their diplomats. Vaguely, he wondered if this man was a civilian, but the title he'd given to the younger Talarians had a distinctly militaristic sound to it. A warrior, then? Wondering why a warrior would be necessary in the human colony, Jey'Tsu turned away, prepared to head back to his father to report what he'd seen. But Nairi, one of the female Talarians, had seen him and called out to him. Left with no other choice, Jey'Tsu headed toward the small cluster, inclining his head regally in greeting. "I greet you, son of the chief," Nairi murmured, bending her knees and touching the earth with the tips of her long pink fingers. Standing and straightening, she gestured excitedly to the human. "He knows our language!" Raising one eyebrow in an expression he'd learned from the humans, Jey'Tsu regarded Nairi with amusement. "No, he doesn't. His translator does." Confused, one of the other young males, Edaga, asked, "But, Jey'Tsu, what is a translator?" Turning to face the human for the first time since joining their party, Jey'tsu raked his gaze over the man, blue eyes lit with humor and intelligence. "Ask him," he finally responded, jerking his head to indicate Erin. "Then go home. It is not your duty to be here tonight." Without waiting for a response, Jey'Tsu turned away and headed back into the forest. He would hunt game for the humans, since their growing numbers would require more food quickly, then he would go home to sleep for the night. ((The italic bits are the Talarians speaking their native tongue, but since Erin has a translator, I wrote it in English so he'd understand it.)) |

(Okay, I'll use italics for whenever the native language is spoken too, it'll be choppy, since the translator doesn't speak the native language perfectly either.) The way the natives reacted in, awe? Astonishment? Erin couldn't read the aliens expressions yet, though they seemed similar enough to human expressions that he could approximate what emotions equated to what expressions. Still, it was clear that the natives were startled by his use of their language, but when he tried to tell the natives that it was his 'translator' that spoke their language, they seemed unable to comprehend. Shaking his head, Erindale wondered how he was supposed to explain. Looking at one of the natives, which his translator had identified as having a female voice pattern, not that he could tell at the moment, Erin noted how she called out to someone just beyond them. A communicator chip implanted just behind his earlobe had alerted him to the security comm-chatter, so he'd known about the approach of the newcomer from the security forces radio signals. He noted how the female bowed in obvious deference to the mans presence, which meant that the man was obviously much higher up in society than she was, though until he knew what the mans rank was, he wasn't going to try for a show of respect until he knew the mans rank within his own society. Erin didn't like diplomacy type situations; he was smart, he just wasn't too fond of being a diplomat himself, too much politics according to the individuals agendas, instead of putting the people's interests first. "A translator is what changes my words into your language. My species speak many words, many voices. Different voices have different words for same things. 'Translator' changes these words into common language, so all can understand all others. Good for talking to someone when you don't know their language. Like you, me. I can't speak your language, but with 'translator' I can understand your words." Seeing the confusion of the younger natives, and how the more poised warrior moved off on his own, Erindale turned to one of the other natives, not the female he'd been addressing. Is he always irritated? Or is that his rank? Noting the confusion at the translators choice of words, Erin tried again. The one you all bowed to, is he always so annoyed? Or is it bad hunting for him Again, Erin found himself unable to fully articulate his sentence, which was actually more like 'Does he always have a stick up his butt', but apparently that particular phrase didn't exist for the Talarians. Either that, or someone had put in a filter that kept the more colorful words and phrases from being translated properly. Still, despite the minor problems that his translator posed, the conversation he had with the young Talarians was quite enjoyable, if limited due to the still incomplete translation system in use. As he continued to talk though, the translator continued to get better at translating, so by the end of the conversation, he'd learned a few Talarian jokes, always a good sign. Waving as the group wandered back into the forest, Erindale figured out what the time was on this world, and figured that now was as good a time as any to hit the sack. |

Edaga, the young male to whom Erindale had spoken, recognized that he was being asked about Jey'Tsu, but he wasn't quite certain of the meaning behind the human's question. Finally, wanting to try to explain, he spoke in halting English. "Jey'Tsu is.... wawindaji. Um..... hunter? He is.... best. Very.... strong. Courage." Frustrated, he broke off, a frown drawing his brows together, the scales above his eyes shimmering in the unnatural glow of the human colony's lights. "We must go," he said, reverting back to the Talarian tongue and hoping that Erin's 'translator' would interpret his words correctly. "The chief's son has said we must return." Then, for clarification, he added, "Jey'Tsu. Hunter and... also cheif's son. Muhimu..... important.... what he say." Retreating slowly back into the forest, the party of young Talarians took their leave of Erin before heading back to their families and their beds for the night. Jey'Tsu watched them from his silent perch in the trees, turquoise colored eyes following the younglings on their journey until he could no longer see them through the brush and leaves of the forest. Only then did he drop noiselessly to the ground, large wings extended to slow his fall and scaled green feet taking the brunt of the impact. He spent another few hours prowling restlessly around the human's camp, quickly and efficiently killing the few beasts who thought to move forward into the light. These creatures would be offered to the humans as a food source, though Jey'Tsu personally thought they would do better if they were taught how to hunt, rather than relying on the Talarians to do their hunting for them. Still, he had a job to do, and do it he would - even if the completion of it left a sour taste in his mouth. After dropping off his bounty, the green-skinned Talarian made his way back to his home, glad to be away from the alien settlement for another night. He supposed there was nothing wrong with it, but the stark buildings that were being built seemed only to take away from the beauty and natural wonder of the forest, and he wanted nothing so much as to fill his eyes with his people's home. Settling down for the night, however, Jey'Tsu was forced to admit that there had been something... intriguing about the human who had spoken to the younglings earlier that day. He didn't know exactly what; only that the human had been different from the others that he'd met. |

As much as it aggravated him to be unable to articulate his words properly, Erin was glad to see that the other Talarians were having as much trouble putting their words into a human language, as he was turning his language into Talarian, despite the best efforts of the translator to keep up. Nonetheless, some of his message seemed to have gotten through, and he learned the rank of the Talarian who had seemed so brash. Bowing to the Talarians with a garbled thank you in their own language, Erin waved as they moved off and went back behind the perimeter of the One thing about humans, they weren't accustomed to changing their ways to fit the climate, hence why their current home was built to watch the forest from above, not to watch over the forest itself. Some thousands of kilometers distant to the north, a different colony was set up, one which blended in with its surroundings. Different colonies held different colonists, thus different views, and not 300 kilometers south of his colony, Erin could already begin to see the ancient designs of Chinese feudal era buildings, reminiscent of an old Emperor's Palace. Smiling as he headed back to the main barracks, Erin made his way back out to the perimeter from time to time, meeting with a few hunters from time to time. He was glad to see a few of the mechanized troops talking with the hunters on how best to hunt particular creatures, something that humans weren't used to doing, hunting. Most humans were either soldiers who fought battles in wartime, or were civilians who had no clue how to hold a knife without risking their own flesh. Which wasn't to say that there were no humans at this colony that hunted, most of the hunters though were kept within the colony until they had learned how to hunt the native creatures without getting killed more often then they successfully caught prey. Humans were used to hunting with guns, not spears and swords the way the Talarians did. Finally turning himself into bed, his trusted friend chirping at him to help him sleep, Erin remembered hazily the Talarian, the chief's son, but only vaguely. The man seemed like a tight-ass, but if the man were indeed, the chief's son, then having to hunt for someone other than his own kind could explain his irritation. Fending for someone unwilling or unable to fend for themselves could well have caused his irritation. With that, Erin found himself dozing off int- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eyes squinting as the sunlight poured into his window suddenly as the last of the construction containers were broken down, Erin woke up putting one hand to his face as the morning light suddenly cut through his opened window, thankfully the window holo-screen kept the light from blinding him. Rubbing an eye sleeping as he got up, an alarmed series of chirping brought him quickly awake, before his head smacked with the overhang of the bunk above him. Getting out of bed with greater care, Erin remembered that he'd asked for his room to be nearest an open gate, so that the morning sunlight would easily be seen whenever he woke up. Looking out of the window through that open gate, the view was indeed, magnificent. The morning dew beckoned him forth, and a coo that passed for his dragonoid friends yawn further enticed him to wake up. Making himself a cup of coffee and strolling outside, Erin waited until Wrexley joined him on his shoulder, the creatures weight not inconveniencing him in the least. Being genetically altered to be a better human in every scientifically measurable manner allowed Erin to hold his pet without worry, which was good considering the creature weighed roughly 30 pounds in all. Looking out at the planet that was to be his home, Erin sipped his coffee from the gateway, a few Talarians also leaning against the wall, a bit of their conversation caught by his translator. Well, friends and neighbors they may be, but I wouldn't trust them, even those from the other colonies. The Talarian in question, female, not as well built as the chief's son perhaps, but still a powerful warrior, was quickly questioned by a younger warrior, this one female as well, perhaps her child judging from appearance. But -unknown word, unable to translate-, what about the colony that built downwards, letting their machines seed the seeds of our world above them? They build in harmony with our world, are they really so bad? And what about their temple-city? I don't understand about this 'Buddha' they spoke of, but their people spoke our language well. They even let me play with their children, inviting everyone to learn together. Are they bad people too? Obviously, the child had been to the other two nearby colonies, and had her own conceptions about the colonists. The young females mother or tutor, however much she sighed in agreement, still didn't seem to trust humans. I agree, not all humans are- -unable to translate-, -but I wouldn't take a few nights among them as an indication of the entire species. Those 'Buddhists' are great philosophers, and their warriors believe in ancestors like we do. Some of their people even try to create harmony with our world, but that doesn't mean that they're friendly. Remember that young one. Clearly, not everybody here was sanguine with sharing their planet with humans, something that Erindale had expected, but was still troubled by. Humanity would have a ways to go before they gained the acceptance of the Talarians, and they'd have to make sure not to step on too many toes. Standing up straight as the sounds of a hover-crawler drew near, Erin watched as a group of human hunters drove off with a couple Talarian hunters to guide them. From the way the hunters laughed, they clearly had no trouble with learning from a Talarian, which was good. Still, all the humans carried hunting rifles of some sort, though for their part, most of those weapons were of the silenced variety so as not to upset the local wildlife as much. With the exception of the Chinese settlers some kilometers distant and a few other colonies, most human hunters used guns or the occasional arrows for hunting purposes. |

Morning came for Jey'Tsu, as it always did; with the trumpet call of the wild tembo as they crashed through the forest on their massive legs as the herd migrated to the lake for the day. He had seen pictures of the animals called elephants on the human's home planet, and it was the creature that most closely resembled their native tembo. The differences were many and varied, however; where the elephants were gray and brown, the tembo came in brightly variegated colors. Instead of four massive legs to move around on, the tembo possessed only three, two in the back, and one in the front. However, instead of running, they rolled on hard patches of calloused flesh that rotated on the ends of their 'feet.' The two back legs were used for traction and speed, while the single front leg was used for steering. Like the elephants, the tembo also possessed a long trunk for a nose, though their ears were significantly smaller than the elephants. The most significant difference, however, was that the tembo were so conscientious of the life around them, and so open to communication, they had developed a speaking system with the Talarians, and coexisted harmoniously with the dragon people. Rolling out of his hammock, instantly alert and awake despite the early hour of the wake-up call, Jey'Tsu immediately picked up his gear to strap it on, then, before going to find his breakfast, he bowed his head and gave thanks to the gods and the planet for allowing him to see another day. Finally, finished with his morning preparations, he joined his father for breakfast then left immediately to see to his duties at the human colony. With no apparent interest in what the humans did, he patrolled their perimeter easily, saying hello to his fellow Talarians who were also on duty until the colony could be fully erected and the human's own guards posted for protection. It was rare that a creature of the forest would approach the new site, as the noise of construction and the bustle of many people kept all but the most curious of animals away. When one crept far enough forward, it was chased away easily enough by an arrow shot close to it's head. If, however, the animal refused to be scared away and still moved toward the colony, it would be dispatched and taken to either the colony itself for the humans to use as food, or, if it was unsuitable, it would be taken back to the Talarian city to be dealt with. It was as he was carrying a large kalim'bwa that he'd shot and killed into the colony that he saw the same military man - Erindale, his memory supplied - from the previous day. After depositing his burden, he turned toward the human, but realized that he was looking at something elsewhere, and, turning his gaze in the same direction, Jey'Tsu saw several of his young clan members going off in one of the human's vehicles; likely on a tour of the forest or the other human colonies that had popped up. Once the vehicle was out of sight, the Talarian brought his gaze back to Erin, and, waiting for the human's eyes to rest on him, he offered a nod of greeting and, using a movement he had seen other humans use before, raised his hand to wave. |
| Humanity is a never ending loop of amusement for one reason or another; you just have to dig far enough past the bullshit and fake faces to find the true core of idiocy. | |

Cursing his luck at the morning communal tables, his morning coffee ration has apparently already been doled out to someone else, greedy bastards. Most of the soil around this colony wasn't suitable for the growing of coffee, and the ground within the colony was still being redistributed now that the homes were finished, and the last of the colony defenses, administration buildings, and military barracks were finished before planting such labor intensive crops could be determined. In lieu of his normal cup of coffee, Erin got a few bowls of cereal, one of oatmeal, the other two of something akin to cream of wheat, and ate until his mind came alert again. Once his breakfast was finished, and he'd put in his complaint about the lack of attention being paid to the rations of coffee being doled out specifically for security personnel, Erin waited for the general hubbub to die down, seeing how the humans and Talarians came and went on the few trucks that were being used for general recreation activities. One truck came back with more than a few scratches and dents, which brought about an outcry from the techs who would have to patch the damage up, bringing a wry chuckle from his lips as the techs maneuvered the truck back into the garage for repairs. About to head inside again, a spot of movement caught his eye, so turning his head to see the movement, Erin spied a vaguely familiar figure doing an approximation of a human wave, and a good one at that. Most Talarians were too stiff with their arm when trying to wave, but this one seemed to have gotten a knack for it. Mentally shrugging in an attempt to regain the memory of who the Talarian was, a sudden call from the forest brought his attention back to the perimeter, where a Tembo sauntered up, accompanied by a Talarian, and a human female, a scientist from the labcoat she wore, quickly wandered up and spoke to the Talarian. From the sounds and the surprised look on the Talarians face, she spoke almost perfect Talarian, but the response she gained from the Talarian caused her to grimace. Stopping in place to amp up the volume receiver to pick up just the conversation she had with the Talarian, she proved irritated at having to use a translator to speak with the subject she wished to speak with. Obviously she spoke fluently in multiple language, perhaps too fluently, as she swore in perfect Chinese in terms that need not be repeated. Tuning the conversation out as the Tembo lifted itself up higher for her to examine it, Erin brought his attention back to the Talarian who's initially called him over. All he could remember was that the person was the chief's son, not the mans name, unfortunately. Hello, son of the chief. What calls you to single me out for conversations? Did I offend you earlier yesterday? One benefit to being genetically altered, was that he had a computer chip in his head that allowed him to download languages and whatnot directly into his brain, so what the computer ship knew, he also knew, which included the current knowledge of the Talarian language. So when he spoke, he spoke fluent Talarian, though his accent remained quite strong in the human range. |
