Alex Chen: 1 2 3
-----
He was my best friend
I tried to help him
But he traded everything for suffering
And found himself alone

Life for Alex has always been sort of a dream. As a child he had parents who were devoted to him; always encouraging him when he wanted to play piano, try gymnastics, then football, and finally soccer with some art and singing thrown in between. He never stuck with anything for too long, but his parents never seemed to mind his constant changing and was always there for him. Then as he got older he only got more blessed by having friends that cared for him and teachers that loved him.

All in all, he had a blessed life. A life that anyone would want, it was not too overbearing that he wanted to rebel and yet it was not too lax that he wanted to visit the church every Sunday to receive some sort of penance for what his life had become. It was a perfect balance that almost seemed unreal...

It wasn't until he was in high school that he appreciated the life that he had, at times he had taken everything for granted, but that was before he met his best friend, Yuya. They met in their youth, around the age of ten and bonded quickly. Yuya was not the type that Alex normally gravitated towards, but something about the other called out to him and they had been inseparable all throughout their youth and all four years of high school. From what he learned during all those years of knowing the other, Yuya had not lived a very great life.

When Alex was little, he believed every family was like his own and that was the reason why everyone was so happy as a child. That belief was soon forgotten as he got older and understood life a bit more. He had just been blessed while other children may be happy for other reasons and at the same time there were those who had to fake happiness for their lives outside of school weren't. For a brief period in his life he had begged his parents to make the other parents of the students like them but he soon came to realization that that just wasn't how life worked.

So he got over this feeling and just appreciated his life and what he had, because he knew that others didn't, like Yuya. And even though they were from separate worlds, they still found themselves bonding in a way he had never done with anyone else.

That was why when high school ended it had been tough to say good-bye. Yuya and Alex spent the best and worst years of their life together, even went through puberty and awkward first dates together. They had shared their entire life stories and lived through their teen years together so to see it all end was hard, very hard.

But it had to happen, there was just no way that Alex would achieve what he wanted to staying in town. He had to go off to college and learn the world of business and entrepreneurship while Yuya did his own thing. Even at graduation he still never found out what Yuya was planning to do with life after school, but they promised to keep in touch and they did.... for a while.

It began with an e-mail every week and a phone call every night. But those calls lessened into one a week and e-mail's once a month. Soon, when in his second year of college Alex was offered a job as an apprentice he was sending out only the occasionally e-mail in his spare time, but even that lessened over time.

In a matter of four years, Alex had lost complete contact with Yuya and it was disappointing but Alex had a career now and a new life. Dwelling in the past was just not something he could do now when he was planning on starting his own chain. The year he spent as an apprentice had done wonders for him and he had learned everything he needed to know to start his own store in a matter of months.

The next two years had been planning and creating; his love for photography had reappeared after graduation and so he planned a business around the arts. It was a gallery type business that allowed up and coming artists to project images and hold shows in artistic ways instead of the traditional painting tacked onto the walls. It had been a lot of work, but over time he had established a business and had a lot of returning and beneficial clients.

His business had exploded rapidly and before he knew it there were offers to open this chain in other cities, this required Alex making a company and a team that could run not only this gallery but the galleries in the other cities. It would lessen his workload and allow him some free time to himself, something he hadn't had in a while.

Once everything was in place and all of his business taken care of, he had some time off. At first he didn't know what to do since it had been more than two years since he had a single day off, but once he got to thinking he thought about returning to his hometown, visiting his family and maybe catching up with his old friends; especially Yuya.

And so at the age of 25 he was returning home.

[Hope it's alright... as I said before, my muse is rough xD]

Yuya Matsushita - Freshman Year
Grown up | 2 | 3

Singing/Dancing | 2 | 3

The bitter sweet taste of life had never been fed to Yuya on a silver spoon. He didn’t know what it tasted like the way most of his comrades in school did. He didn’t know that moments were meant to be savored like the sweetest drop of honey. He didn’t know that parents were supposed to be kind and loving. He didn’t know much about right and wrong. All he knew was that life wasn’t fair… because that’s the most his parents had ever said to him. It stuck, that much is true, but it didn’t give him the most optimistic outlook on life. Not until he met Alex, anyways.

Yuya had been a tiny little thing when he met his friend in the fifth grade. But he was notorious for being a bully. Height hadn’t meant much when he had enough strength in his little body to tackle someone to the ground and steal their lunch money if they didn’t want to fork it over. It wasn’t until he attempted to take on the new kid and wound up laughing in detention instead of grumbling. From there, a friendship was forged.

Yuya made sure that Alex never visited his home, though. Embarrassed by his parents not only because of the ‘uncool’ factor that most had, but because he didn’t have a father that stuck around longer than a month out of the year and a mother who happened to diddle in a little bit of prostitution and a lot of liquor. His home was almost always destroyed if he didn’t have time to pick up the mess from random brawls and he had to work extra hard to scrub his clothes in the bathroom sink to make sure he didn’t smell bad when he went to school.

In Middle school, the youth seemed to have found his calling. Something that actually made him happy. Choir and Dance classes. He worked hard mowing grass to make sure he could afford to pay the monthly fee it took to learn proper dance steps. But in the end… it gave him something to do. He was happiest when Alex would come to practice with him and merely watch. The praise the other teen gave him when he accomplished something pushed him further. Alex gave him things his parents never had, he actually cared.

When the duo reached High School, their cliques caused problems when they wanted to hang out. Yuya shifting between the drama crew and the outcast stoners depending on his mood was a strong contrast to Alex’s crew… but they worked it out and made time to keep their bond strong. When graduation came and the two had to part… Yuya’s heart was broken. They tried to keep in touch… but as everyone knows, long distance friendship never work out.

Yuya lost the only stable thing in his life on that day. It hurt him when those emails finally came to a halt. He understood that Alex’s life was on a fast track speeding up, but it still sucked when he realized that he was basically nothing more than a fond memory in the other’s mind. He tried to keep up with his dancing, but when he no longer had someone there praising him… it was useless. The movements grew stale and he resigned to helping his mother who had finally contracted liver cancer. A year later she passed and Yuya was evicted from their shared apartment.

Searching for a job, he apprenticed for a good year at a local tattoo shop. Sleeping on the streets and carrying his clothes in a back pack, he spent all of his money earned from the art work on alcohol. A couple of parties later and he was a flat out pot-head. Another year later and he was yearning for something more. Which was when he started lacing his pot with stronger drugs. Nothing more than a bit of hallucinogenic and perhaps a chewed mushroom on occasion.

Only one person knew his situation, the Piercer at the tattoo shop, but she kept her voice silent simply because he had asked her to. His work didn’t suffer from his habits and he was able to earn enough cash to pay his part at the shop. Keeping him in relatively good terms with the fellow artists, anyways.

So as he lazed on the couch in the lobby of the shop, he basked in the feeling of the fan blowing next to him. Never did he think when he was seventeen, that he’d be nothing more than a homeless tattooing junky.
