It didn't offend Kasper at all that the maid elected to wipe her hand off subtly on her skirt rather than let the germ transference stand. He'd prefer to take about fifteen dunks in a very cold river after his job was done, but he was sure he'd have to just contend with whatever water was lying around. The people in Ephrem didn't usually bathe as often as people in Edan, but they worked with nature and filth had fewer places to stand so it didn't seem as though they got as filthy. But Kasper's mother, on the other hand, had been rather pristine for a simple farming woman and had insisted that her sometimes resistant son have his ears and face clean with due regularity. He laughed when she said that he didn't look like way Quinn did. "Yeah, I basically figured as much the moment I got a good look at what passes for heroic. Not that someone like me is meant to be, er, I mean I do alright for myself but I've never wanted to be something like a knight. They're so..." He couldn't find a good adjective to describe how he felt about the save-the-world, heroic figures with booming voices and lines of swooning ladies to follow them as Avalon seemed capable of changing the topic quite quickly. Still, she was the first person besides Galaris to take time out of her day and duties to speak with him and that definitely shot her up on the short list of people Kasper didn't feel awkward calling out to when he saw them. Kasper was glad when his day's labors were up and after a good wash in which the water ended up moderately filthy (but nothing compared to his first day), he was ready to face Galaris and dinner. He at first shoveled the stew in his mouth rather quickly, only slowing down with the elder made mention of the banquet. "What kind of gesture is that? Inviting me to a banquet just to work? Does he really want to make a fool of me or is this some way to prove that he's a Prince and not just the prat I saw the other day?" |

Galaris had to fight back a frown of reproof as Kasper all but dove into his stew, but he realized that the boy had worked hard that day and was probably famished. Still, his own sense of manners and etiquette demanded that he say something, so he lay a gnarled hand on the youth's shoulder and spoke gently. "Don't go at your food like that, lad. You'll choke yourself, and I'm far too busy with orders to save you." He grinned after he'd spoken to show that he was teasing, and a soft pat to Kasper's shoulder would cement the good-natured teasing. Rounding the table, the physician sat down across from the youth and folded his hands on the scarred table top. Considering, he studied Kasper for a moment, his blue eyes bright and roving over the boy's face curiously. "Do you know," he finally said quietly, "I don't believe you mean that as an insult when you say that Quinn is a prat? I almost hear a bit of affection in your voice." Chuckling, he went on, "Normally, apprentices aren't permitted to attend the feast, but you have a personal invitation from the Prince. I will be there to observe and assist should anyone fall ill. You, however, will likely be expected to mingle with the servants, and, barring that, you will shadow me." Growing serious, Galaris was silent for a moment. Then, after taking a deep breath, he pinned Kasper with a steady gaze and said, "Arrogant he may be at times, but the Prince is an honorable man. He would not have invited you to the feast tomorrow night simply to make a fool of you publicly." Rising once again, the elder moved to his work table and gathered the two bottles that were there. "I must take these tonics to the King and to the Lady Elaine. I may be a while, as Karis tends to get maudlin when he grows weary. You are free to read any of my books, should you wish to. Otherwise, I might suggest you take to your bed early. We have a lot of preparing to do before the feast." Advice given, Galaris let himself out through the door and went quietly down the steps to deliver his tonics. |

Despite only knowing him for a short while, Galaris was quite good at reading Kasper's mood and tone. Or perhaps he was just a simple read. He tried to eat a bit more laboriously (i.e. slower in normal vocabularies) and listened as the elder spoke about Quinn. "Well yes, I don't think he's utterly hopeless, I just haven't had much experience with the noble class. We'd get one or two in Ephrem every other year or so, either demanding lodgings because the path had grown too dark and dangerous or else to take our tax and check up on the status of the village. I always kept away though so it was just a watching from afar experience. I don't know what my mother did during her younger days, but she was one of the only women in the village who could read and write so she was always the one to attend to the noble ladies...as more on their level, or for what they expected. I scarcely recall." He wrapped his fingers around his spoon thoughtfully, posing unintentionally with it on the way to his mouth as he thought about the impending feast. It still didn't sound fun, no matter how he framed it, but if he was supposed to go then he would. "So I'll get to see the King? I saw a tall, regal and somewhat frightening man earlier with a regiment of guards going toward Edan proper and I assumed that to be him..." Kasper didn't reflect on the fact that the man was a sworn enemy of magic, but perhaps that was what inherently made him wary of even seeing the king of Edan. He moved his bowl over to the basin in the dubbed 'kitchen' area and prepared it as Galaris left. Kasper sighed and gave the large, science-laden room another glance before he made his way up to the disaster that was now his quarters. Clothes were still strewn about from when he had hastily undone his back in search of the one clean tunic he had saved from home and he reflected with no small measure of displeasure that he'd have to clean his clothes again before the morrow, because servant or no, a banquet didn't seem like the best place to be caught in a dirty shirt. |

By the time Galaris returned that evening, Kasper was ensconced in his room with the door closed, so the physician assumed he'd gone to bed. Following the youth's example, he crawled into his own bed in the main room and, after pulling his quilts up to his chin, fell into a deep and dreamless sleep. The following day was spent out in the town, talking to the townspeople and simply mingling. Aside from a single tonic that he had to deliver that afternoon before the feast, Galaris had decided that, as it was a rather special occasion, they would relax for the day. Before he and Kasper were to get ready, he handed a single vial of yellow tonic to the youth and asked him to deliver it to the Lady Viviana. "It's for her voice," he explained. "Directions are on the back of the tag, like usual. Off you go." Waiting until Kasper had disappeared out the door and he could no longer hear the boy's footsteps on the stone staircase, Galaris went to a trunk that was shoved up against the wall and went mostly unnoticed. Opening the dusty lid, he retrieved two outfits - a scholar's robe in regal blue for himself, carefully preserved between two thin sheets of tissue paper, and a fine linen suit of deep green for Kasper. He wanted to surprise the boy when he came back, and he'd been desperately trying to keep them both busy so he wouldn't blurt it out before it was time to get dressed. ((I thought, if you wanted to follow the series, we could have the singer be a witch and try to kill Quinn. Up to you thought, however you want to play it.)) |
