After his last dagger was thrown, Quinn, no longer laughing but still with a grin lighting up his features, turned to his knights. They were still amused, and the mood was lighthearted. Feeling poorly about terrorizing the young lad who'd carried the shield, the prince was just starting across the courtyard to apologize when he heard a new voice ring out. Curious, he turned to see who was speaking, and was startled to find himself the recipient of the light reproof. Tipping his head slightly to the side, an amused and slightly irritated look on his handsome face, Quinn clasped large hands behind his back; broad shoulders thrown back and muscled legs closing the distance between himself and the newcomer slowly. As he approached, he took a moment to look the other lad over, and he saw intrigued him. Tall, though not as tall as he was; a thick pelt of rich brown hair; and a bright blue eyes that spoke of both humor and intelligence. Curious now despite himself, Quinn stopped just in front of the other young man and, with an insolent glance, determined for himself that he'd never met this youth in his life. "Do I know you?" he asked curiously, leaning forward slightly as he spoke. "I don't think I do... which means that you don't know me. And yet..... you called me... friend. I rather think that's quite a large mistake on your part." As though he were giving the best advice to someone much younger than he was, Quinn winked, grinned, and turned around to stride off once again, his intent to seek out the servant and apologize. |

He was coming this way and though Kasper had done his best to speak in a deep, booming voice that made him seem bigger, stronger, and less awkward than he was, it had come out as faintly friendly to his ears, as though he was merely chiding a companion who had showered him with dirt out in the fields. He wrinkled his nose at that thought. Up close he was annoyingly handsome with the kind of face that stuck in your mind and, were he an artist or artistically inclined toward more than splattering ink lines on used parchment to cover over sentences that he never wanted anyone to read, he probably would have rushed into Galaris' tower, struck with a sudden sense of direction due to finding his muse, and rushed back to ask to paint a portrait of this shining example of good breeding mixed with confidence. Kasper was shocked by the knight's response. He half expected a 'duuur' not because the man looked unintelligent, just that he hoped that someone who didn't look uncomfortable in his own skin at his age would have a glaring error for everyone to see. He furrowed his brow in response, the smile still pulling at the corners of his mouth. "My apologies. I'm Kasper, of Ephrem. How rude of me not to introduce myself first, though it hardly matters who you are. I'd never be friends with a bully. You could have warned the man before loping daggers at his head." He wanted to look around. Was that him who said that? Kasper's words were sometimes like his magic. He was left in the aftermath blinking and wondering if someone else had borrowed his body for that one instant. At least magic was empowering, this outburst gave him the feeling that he'd soon be seeing the business end of the other youth's well cleaned boot. |

Shocked into silence and momentary paralysis at the fact that the lad had the audacity to reply, it was almost a full 15 seconds before Quinn turned to face Kasper and closed the distance between them once again. He could hardly believe that what he'd just heard had actually been said, but the thought that it was, rather than anger him as it probably should have, amused him, instead. No one had ever dared to offer a remonstration to the Prince of Edan, and certainly not in that slightly haughty tone. If the absolute truth were told, Quinn was delighted that he'd come across someone who didn't cower in the dust at his feet because of who he was. Still, the response warranted something in return. The most immediate thing he could think of was, "And I would never have a friend who could be so idiotic." Narrowing his piercing gaze on Kasper and allowing a sardonic and sarcastic smile to curl up the corners of his mouth, he demanded quietly, "Tell me, Kasper, do you know how to walk on your knees? I'd be happy to help you out if you've never done it before." His voice was taunting; a dare to Kasper to come after him and try to finish what he'd inadvertently started. |

Kasper felt his anger rise, though it was still doused with a heavy amount of anguish at himself for being so eager to respond to this knight. He really hadn't done anything that bad in the grand scheme of bad things. It was just the fact that he seemed to feel entitled to treating a servant like a target because of where he happened to be standing that got to Kasper. He saw something of himself in the cowering, awkward youth and damn if it was the magic in his veins that made him get into trouble like this, but he wanted to at least say something. He was surprised to find that the knight didn't rush right back to him and give him a swift hit in return for his rebuttal but instead merely spoke again. What he said was such an insulting notion to Kasper that he finally frowned and met the other man's eyes with renewed interest in defending his decision to intervene. "As though I would do that for the simple act of telling you what a prat you're being. Do you think yourself the King to have the arrogance to ask me something like that?" Yeah, that was good. He was a knight so he must be noble, but with what little Kasper knew about nobles, he didn't expect the higher ups would even bother training with his fellow virile youths in the middle of the day. They must have paperwork or ridiculous court meetings to plan for. |

At that, Quinn couldn't help but grin, an amused little chuckle spilling from his mouth and nearly turning the situation into something light and jovial. "You can not address me like that," he said, brow lifted in amusement. The light tone, the slight smile, and the amused glance completely belied the fierceness of his gaze, and, before anyone else could move, he pinned Kasper to the nearest wall with his arm bent up behind his back. "No, I'm not the king," he very nearly growled into the shell of the youth's ear. "I'm his son. Quinn. And you've earned yourself a night in the jail for speaking to me like that. Congratulations." Jerking his head at two of his men who stood nearby, the prince stepped back and handed custody of Kasper over to the knights who stepped forward. Each man took one of the youth's shoulders and hauled him bodily down to the jail below the castle. Quinn watched them go, a frown marring his features. There was something... odd... about Kasper of Ephrem, though he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was that was bothering him. Perhaps it was just his pride that had been pricked, but whatever it was, it niggled at the back of his mind like an itch he couldn't quite reach. Shaking his head, the prince turned and headed back into the castle. |

In the days when he was old and grey and had children from the village street clamoring to hear his stories of the old days on cold winter nights, Kasper was certain he'd look back upon the words he'd said as one of the low points in his life and that last statement as possibly begin the most idiotic thing he had ever said. If he lived that long and with the prospect of people seeing him perform unintentional magical wonders rising by the hour with his unpredictable behavior becoming more and more apparent. As it was he only thought about the pain in his arm as the Prince, as he now very well knew thank you for the reminder, had quite a strong grip. Kasper was a total wimp when it came to hand to hand combat. He'd always lost to the other boys when they went rounds, not that he ever wanted to get involved in boyish fistfights every other day. But that was because he always lost...unless he'd had the foresight to conveniently have his opponent trip over a tree limb or smack himself in the face and that was difficult to pull off without anyone noticing. His arm would surely be sporting a nice bruise later, but it wasn't the pain that bothered him. Kasper would trouble Galaris and that was after promising in the form of a nod that he would keep his head down and not cause trouble. Kasper did keep his head down though as the men marched him stoically across the grounds, past Galaris' tower, and down to the dungeons. He was thrown roughly into a dark cell with a fine, dirty layering of straw but it was more welcoming than their iron grips on his arms. He moved to sit against the wall of the cell and glanced toward the small window pane above his head where light barely filtered in from above. Kasper laughed then, pushing his hair back with a hand to run his fingers through the oddly colored strands against his forehead. "Well I'll definitely have to apologize to Galaris...to think that prat was actually a Prince. I should have known." |

Galaris heard about Kasper's imprisonment that same evening, but it took him that night and part of the next morning to negotiate the boy's release. Finally though, he had the King and the Prince's permission to go down to the jail and retrieve the youth. There was, however, a price to be paid for his early release; though the physician personally thought it was a small price to pay for insulting royalty. With two guards accompanying him and a torch to light the way down the gloomy steps, Galaris emerged into the jail in a halo of light and immediately called out for Kasper. He waited for one of the guards to unlock the boy's cell door, then went inside after handing off the torch. He had no wish to set them all ablaze, thank you very much, and the straw that littered the floor of the dungeon was both dirty and as dry as a desert. Should even a spark happen to fall on it, the straw would act as kindling and set the entire jail alight. Crossing his arms and arranging his features into a stern expression, Galaris regarded young Kasper silently for a moment. Finally, he hissed quietly, "The one thing I told you to do was keep your head down and stay out of trouble. And what do you do? You insult the prince. How, by any stretch of the imagination, is that keeping your head down?" Finally, unable to maintain the anger that had propelled him down the stone steps and into the jail, he uncrossed his arms and heaved a tired sigh. "I've been up with the King and prince all night, but I've managed to pull a few strings to ensure your release." Before Kasper could respond, the physician held up a hand for silence, then went on. "There is, however, a price to be paid. Tomorrow, you will spend the day sweeping the streets of Edan. It's a far more merciful punishment than others I've heard, so be grateful you're not being tied to a whipping post." Lecture given and suddenly feeling his age, Galaris turned to start up the steps, expecting Kasper to follow him. "To keep you out of trouble, you can spend the rest of today helping me mix medicines and cleaning up our quarters." Sending a quick glance over his shoulder, he finished, "Hopefully, by tomorrow, you'll learn how to keep yourself out of trouble." |

Kasper had an entire night to reflect on the day's events and while he mentally (and just once) physically berated himself for being so dumb as to assume that a Knight couldn't possibly be a high noble or the Prince himself, he had to admit at the end of his mental wanderings there was the tiniest little spark of pride for what he'd done. It wasn't so bad, in retrospect, to joke around with friends, but it was at the expense of a man far under the Prince's station and anyone, especially a Prince, should treat his social inferiors with a bit more respect. So perhaps it was a tiny point for justice and perhaps Quinn would think twice about who he was harassing...or maybe he'd lower his opinion of farm boys and servants alike even more due to Kasper's actions. He shook his straw-laden head, sitting up as he heard footsteps down the corridor. Now was certainly not the time to be thinking in such negative terms. He had come here for a reason...to stay out of trouble. He'd done an admirable job so far by showing the man who was to be his mentor his magic and then picking a petty fight with the heir of the kingdom. Kasper reveled in that at least it couldn't get much worse without him losing his head. He sat up straight, hitting his spine uncomfortably against a random wooden beam in the cell that was probably put there intentionally by cruel architects who knew people would keep running into it in such obscurity. He half expected it to be a guard regiment come to throw him out of the capital for good, but instead it was much worse from a pride standpoint: Galaris. He had promised and now they had to meet again so soon. His face fell and he hung his head in shame that didn't hint at the fact that he felt partially justified at Galaris' speech. He'd had to pull strings to get him free with some sort of awful price attached but at least it wasn't any worse. Kasper propelled himself to his feet and followed at Galaris' heels. By the time they'd reached the other man's tower he had gone over several apologies but they all felt like excuses. So by the time they'd entered the man's quarters he settled on the only apology he could give. "I'm truly sorry, Galaris. I wasn't thinking about the repercussions when I mouthed off to him...I just felt like he was being unnecessarily cruel to a servant and..er...I reacted without thinking. But after thinking about it I regret letting you down so soon. I'll do my best to stay out of trouble from here on out." |

Galaris sighed upon hearing Kasper's apology, and he turned to face the boy with a slight frown. "Your mother asked me to look after you, Kasper. I can't do that if you're off starting arguments with the Prince." Shaking his head, he indicated a place at the table that had been set for Kasper. Going to the small stove that he usually used for heating up potions and medicines, he retrieved a plate that he'd been keeping warm for the boy. Bacon, eggs, and two biscuits with butter sat there, and the physician placed the meal in front of his protege. "Whatever they fed you in the dungeons can't have been very good. Eat up, then you can help me prepare these medicines. By the time you've finished sweeping the streets tomorrow afternoon, they should be ready for delivery." For the rest of the afternoon and well into the evening, Galaris kept both himself and Kasper busy. They mixed potions, created medicines, labeled the bottles, had a cold supper of meat, cheese, bread, and fruit, and finally spent the evening with Galaris pulling out one of his many books and attempting to teach Kasper about the various plants that could be used for healing. Finally, when the elder man had stifled more yawns that he cared to count, he closed the book and said, "Off to bed with you, now, lad. It's an early day you'll be having tomorrow, and a long one, I'll wager. Get some sleep." ((Go ahead and skip to the next day if you want to.)) |

So the disappointment was still there, but it wasn't as horribly pronounced as it was when they'd first talked upon his being sprung from the dungeons by his mentor. He decided the best thing to do would be to just comply quietly with Galaris' wishes and do his job by assisting the other man for the rest of the night. Kasper was usually a youth of many words as his mother had instilled in him her habit of speaking while she worked. It was personal penance to keep his mouth shut for most of the night and merely concentrate in the confusing work that Galaris had for him. What he was doing wasn't all that bad, just cleaning and cutting and mixing when the other man told him to, but it was the explanations behind the concoctions they were making that had his head sore and bones tired by the time he fell into his thankfully comfortable new bed. He awoke the next morning in quite a better mood and even chattered a bit to Galaris about the things he'd heard in the dungeons from bored guards while he ate a piece of bread that he'd topped with fruit in such a way that it was mostly chunk and little bread. The men down there were so bored that they were usually reduced to playing card games, betting on which rat would make it to the hole first, and gossiping like a couple of market wives about the nobles who made regular spectacles of themselves. "So I'm just to sweep all day? I'll give them this, they certainly picked a punishment that's going to lull me into a false sense of security before it dawns on me how menial and aggravating it is..." And Kasper wasn't let down with his prediction. He never knew that so many people could all create so much filth in so little time. Horses trodded out hay and grass, people kicked up dust and gravel, and merchants carelessly dropped the rotted and poor pieces of merchandise, meat, eggs, fruit, vegetables, and things that no human or animal should ever have to eat. Kasper started his sweeping journey all smiles and lenience for anyone who looked right at him before dropping something right in his path or in the one he'd just swept, but by the time the sun was quite high above the clouds he was reduced to muttering to himself about how people could have such little consideration as he swept yet another unnecessary piece of filth out of the way. Did anyone even do this for a living? It was hard to imagine how the roads stayed clean for even an instant without him with his straw broom ready to push more nonsense to the sides. |

Galaris chuckled at Kasper's description of his task for the morning, pleased to see some of the youth's spark come back to him. He'd felt badly the previous night, as the boy had seemed so quiet and melancholy - quite out of his character, from what the physician had observed so far. Watching from the window of his tower as Kasper began to sweep the streets, he made certain that the boy wasn't going to get into any immediate trouble before turning back to work on the rest of his medicines. He'd told the youth that he could deliver the finished medicines to their recipients when he'd finished with his sweeping, but judging by how large the court was, he was going to be plenty tired by the time he made it back to the tower. So, Galaris placed the bottles in a small basket and set out to deliver them himself. Quinn, having heard that Kasper would be out sweeping the streets that day, made it a point to be on patrol. He very nearly grinned when he saw the other male, but instead strolled past casually, as though he had no idea that Kasper was even there. Turning to one of the knights at his side, he said loudly, "I wonder whatever happened to the physician's helper? Perhaps he's learned to walk on his knees by now." Deliberately, he bumped his shoulder into Kasper's, then turned around and feigned surprise. "Kasper! I was just thinking about you! Tell me, how is your knee-walking coming along?" |

He'd finally hit his stride about half an hour or so after he'd had to clean up an entire crate of insects that smelled worse alive than splattered on the dirt road. He'd given the man who had dropped his vile crate an odd look with the contents had scuttled out but the man's only explanation was that they were excellent from keeping certain pests off of vegetables. When Kasper had remarked that they devoured the remains of rotted vegetables that he'd already swept out of the road, the man had quickly excused himself and had left Kasper to clean up the mess. But the situation was so absurd that the smile gradually returned to Kasper's face and after he'd destroyed the last of the unfortunate insects in his path, he brushed his hair back with an arm and reveled how good it was to be alive because he had seen the alternative, and actually swept it out of the way. This sensation significantly dwindled when he heard the light clank of armor that signaled a guard regiment was coming his way. He moved to the side, sweeping as he went so as to appear busy and not worth the bother, but he soon heard a strangely familiar voice. Odd, since he'd only heard it once before. Quinn had made an impression, that was certain. He kept his blue eyes down on his sweeping path and was resolved to ignore the Prince, but it become much more difficult when he suddenly bumped him as he passed. Kasper met the other man's eyes, frowning initially but a slight grin played at his mouth as he took in the other man's expression. He was just trying to provoke him which was Quinn's loss since Kasper had his fill of unjustified punishments for a few ignorant words. "So sorry, my lord. I'm from the country, you see, and we're not used to being visited by anyone above country nobility which as I heard last night barely counts above the status of a servant so I'm afraid I'm not well versed in grovelling." |

Quinn watched, amusement already lighting his eyes, as Kasper tried to appear busy so he wouldn't be noticed. For the prince, the action only called out to his mischievous nature, which is what had him addressing the other youth. Surprised when Kasper didn't rise to the bait, Quinn laughed quietly, a pleased grin turning up the corners of his mouth. "Nicely done, Kasper of Ephrem. You've more heart and snark than I thought. I like that." Leaning close, he told the other boy, "Not many would stand up for a servant. But you did. You should know, I apologized to him after you were taken away." Stepping back, he regarded the brunette for a moment before clapping one broad, long fingered hand on the other youth's shoulder. "You will come to the banquet tomorrow night with Galaris." With a curt nod and another quick pat on Kasper's shoulder, Quinn strode away, his knights following him like faithful hounds. Once he'd gone further up the street, Kasper would find himself approached by a young woman with silvery blonde hair and blue eyes so pale they seemed nearly silver, too. "I saw what you did yesterday," she told him quietly, offering her hand and an introduction. "I'm Avalon, the Lady Elaine's maid." She waited a moment, then went on, "It was really brave to stand up to Quinn like that. He's a bully sometimes, but I'm glad you walked away when you did. I wouldn't have liked to see you get hurt." |

His words weren't as cutting as they were the day before, but Kasper half expected to get an angered response from the Prince for daring to speak to him like he did. He was pleasantly surprised to find that instead of regarding him with contempt and anger, the Prince instead was quite amused by his words. His eyes were rather large as he regarded Quinn with renewed interest. Needless to say, to think that the man was less of a prat than he'd bargained for was reassuring, him being the heir and all. But on a personal level it meant that he didn't have to look forward to another night in the inhospitable castle dungeons, which was definitely a plus. "Really? I guess I may have been a bit mistaken about you." The smile he'd worn at mention of an apology to the put-upon servant quickly escaped from his features when Quinn said that he and Galaris should come to a banquet. A real one? With nobles and servants lining the walls and all the boring talk that he heard about in gossip from the guards the night before? It sounded terrifying, especially for someone like Kasper with no rank at all. "What would you like me to to do there?" He asked, horrified, but the Prince was already on his way by the time his mouth had caught up to his brain. He sighed and swept idly before he heard a soft voice at his back. Kasper's gaze rose to met a girl, probably around his age, who wore the telltale garments of an Edan servant. At mention of his heroic (in his mind and apparently now otherss too) act his good humor returned and he gave the girl a sheepish grin before hesitantly shaking her hand. "Er...thanks. I'm Kasper, from Ephrem. I can't say that I don't regret it, at least a little bit, but not enough to not have done it. It's inexcusable for him to ac t like that, even if he is a Prince. Or at least I thought." |

Avalon shook hands with Kasper, then raised a pale eyebrow and discreetly wiped her hand on the long cloak she wore. She didn't want to offend him after just having met him, but he'd transferred the filth of the street to her when they'd shaken hands, and she was a fastidious sort of girl. Which was why, she supposed, she did so well as Lady Elain's maid. "It was definitely a good thing to do, as Quinn needs to be brought back down to Earth every once in a while. However, I'm not entirely sure it was a good thing for you to do." Craning her neck back a little bit, she looked Kasper up and down before finally saying, "You don't look like one of these big, muscley guys. Quinn's a real rough, tough, save-the-world sort of fellow, and, well.... you don't look like that." Stepping back fully, she brushed her skirts out and offered a wave and a friendly smile. "I'd better go. Lady Elaine will be wondering where I am." With that said, she passed Kasper and went on her way up to the castle. Later that night, Galaris was waiting for the boy to come back into the tower room. He hot a hot bowl of stew ready for the lad, and, grinning as Kasper ate, said, "I heard the prince invited you to the feast tomorrow night. King Karis is wanting to celebrate 25 years without magic in Edan. He's even asked the Lady Viviana of Coltrane to sing. It should be exciting. We, of course, will be there to work, but it should still prove to be an interesting diversion." |
| Humanity is a never ending loop of amusement for one reason or another; you just have to dig far enough past the bullshit and fake faces to find the true core of idiocy. | |
