The war between the humans and the Sanyi had been a short and rather strange one, a war that ended not because one of the sides conceded victory to the other, but because a greater threat had appeared on the horizon. This new danger had forced both species to call a truce... even to cooperate. Tension still ran strong, but they all needed to keep their energy to fight off the new menace, the Anlikki invasion.

Now that the danger had been pushed back, some would have expected previous hostilities to flare up again, but though both sides remained suspicious of each other, their cooperation had brought a new understanding between them.

It was strange, really. Humanity had since long adopted the capitalist way, along with a certain culture of freedom for all. Meanwhile, the Sanyi was ruled by a conclave of genetically predestined individuals, and their system looked like what communism should have been, had it not been ruined by a certain russian despot. Militaristic and strict, yes, but each Sanyi had anything he needed to live comfortably and productively. They didn't even have money. Somehow, though, it... worked.

Copernicus was a brand new station, right on the edge of the human/Sanyi territory. It was a part of the first big joined project between both races, a belt of observation centers that served as an early defense system, should their old enemy come back for a second round. Most of the staff on Copernicus was human, though there were Sanyi engineers on board as well. Its location, close to Earth and far from where the Anlikki had attacked, meant that it was more of a relay station than a military one.

Suven was among the Sanyi engineers who were recently sent to Copernicus. He looked rather frail for a Sanyi, though cybernetic implants had been installed through his body, making him stronger than he appeared. Faint scars under his bright golden eyes betrayed the corrective occular implants he wore. His species preferred those to glasses.

Work was hard for the engineer. Space stations were constantly in need of repairs and maintenance, and he had to work with human technology, which wasn't the same as what he was used to. However, there was a bright side to working somewhere that wasn't completely dominated by the Sanyi military: humans had developed leisure and fun to a degree his own species hadn't even dreamed about until then. They had television, which they used for reality shows! They had music! They had movies! They had pornography!

To a man used to Earth's life of excess, the Copernicus station would have been rather boring, but to a Sanyi, it was just wild enough. Suven was still hesitant to get into the action, though.

He ended up being almost forced into it when one of his co-workers, a human girl by the name of Kathy, celebrated her twenty-fifth birthday and invited everyone to come to the bar. As he walked in, lost in a small crowd of cheerful engineers, Suven quickly realised that he was one of the only Sanyi there. The other two were also among his group, and stayed in the back, not very enthusiastic about the whole thing. They were all ushered in at a number of tables that had been pushed together, right next to a raised platform. Later, Suven would learn that this platform was a stage for performers.

The engineer sat down between his co-workers and gave them a shy, nervous smile. This could end up being fun...

Kira Donnelly had been working at the station for the last six to seven months, and while it was certainly far from the luxuries of Earth that he was accustomed to, he wasn't of a mind to argue. He'd spent the first couple decades trying to stay out of trouble until the day he could enlist in the Navy, and shortly thereafter the war broke out with the Sanyi. Then the Anlikki decided to stick their ugly noses into the conflict, and another round of warfare got spread around, only now the Sanyi and Humans had to work together, however grudgingly, in order to protect themselves from the new threat to their shared existence.

Seriously, Kira was just glad that by the time the initial war with the Sanyi had started, that he'd already been found out to be a better Spec-Ops than he'd make a soldier, so he didn't have to fight on the front lines. That worked out well for him too, since it meant he'd gotten his hands on one of the Sanyi's cloaking devices, allowing him to sneak onto the Anlikki ships and spy on them. Seriously, the Anlikki thought themselves so tough, but they couldn't tell that the series of sensor ghosts on their internal sensors meant that they had an intruder on board? Stupid. Though Kira later learned that the ships he'd infiltrated had been their worst ships, sent out mainly to determine the capabilities of the Sanyi and other races.

None of that mattered anymore to him, as he prepared for his next work shift at the Grand Germayne, the name of the bar/karaoke club where he worked as a singer/dancer. He'd been signed on as an opener, but had since become the main attraction for the place, due to his lovely singing voice combined with his rather well formed body. He wasn't too muscled, but as a Spec-ops agent you weren't supposed to be one huge muscle, you were meant to be stealthy.

Of course, his past as a Spec-Ops agent was unknown to all but the highest level officers in the human military, and only those who had the need-to-know on his previous wartime experience knew. Of those on the station, only the station commander knew, and outside of that some Sanyi Generals who had employed him during the war with the Anlikki knew of him and his general whereabouts.

Which suited him just fine again, since he wasn't of the mind to go back into service now, not unless another war broke out. His days of espionage were one of necessity, not out of his own desires, merely because his skills in gaining information and going unnoticed elevated him to that task.

Here tonight, a lady and her friends were celebrating her birthday, and she'd specifically requested for him to sing for her birthday. He didn't have to work that particular shift, and in fact this work shift was overtime for him, but the request was one that Kira felt inclined to honor. He had had his fair share of 'requests' in the past while working here, but this woman didn't want his body, merely his singing, so he wasn't of the mind to protest.

Remembering a few weeks back when a Sanyi security officer had asked him for such a 'request', very diffidently, Kira agreed. The Sanyi sort of ruined the mood for the evening though, as for three hours before the actual event, he spent the time explaining his embarrassment about asking for such a sexual favor. Seriously, if he agreed to get laid, Kira didn't want to hear some long drawn out explanation for why such an offer was so difficult to make.

But afterwards though, Kira understood more about Sanyi culture in general, so he decided to make the station his permanent residence, so he could learn more about Sanyi culture. Using the civilian networks, he'd been able to learn a great deal about Sanyi culture, and was surprised to see how naive they were as a culture, at least when it came to sex. Certainly, he could see how the humans had surprised the Sanyi in as many ways as they had. Shaking his head and looking up at one of the pictures of himself on the wall, Kira shook his head. "Yeah yeah, I know. It's been a while since I've been laid, I'm not gonna make that a point when I sing though. I'm here to give her a good birthday song or three or five, not to get a bed partner. Man, it'd still be good to get laid though, most of the people here either aren't interested, or I'm not interested in them. Wish that Sanyi had stayed longer..."

It wasn't exactly a secret as to how the Sanyi and Humans were 'genetically compatible', though that only meant they could have sex, not that the two species could breed. Science experiments had been attempted to see if such breeding was possible through scientific methods, and by the last reports it seemed as though those experiments were making some headway in the form of genetic modifications to volunteers from either species. Nothing definite though.

Finally, as he finished getting dressed, combed his hair, and put on a few pieces of jewelry to complete his ensemble, Kira heard the knock on his door meaning that he had a few minutes before he had to perform. He'd already finished dressing, fortunate that other than some antiperspirant, he didn't need to wear any makeup. It always got worm when he sang, so he always sure to stay hydrated and to keep his armpits from sweating.

Kira's stage outfit.

Taking the mike and seeing the young woman who was having the birthday, Kira saw that there were a few Sanyi here tonight, though only one of them seemed to be 'truly' off shift. The other two Sanyi were obviously not working, but were so stiff in their seats that they obviously preferred to continue working, and had to take a break by the orders of their superiors. "Well now, a young lady, yes you madam, has asked me to perform for her birthday, but don't expect me to sing 'Happy Birthday' for ya, that's a little too simple for me. Instead, I'll sing you something that I think you'll enjoy, though it doesn't have anything directly to do with a birthday. I just happen to enjoy his songs, and it a cheerful song. Cue the song."

Kira's voice, also the first song.
Second song.

Giving a break between the first two songs to get a drink, Kira wiped his forehead with a mop and sat the mike back onto the stage. For a moment the woman looked disappointed, but Kira surprised her by walking into the audience and invited her to come onto the stage with him while he sang the next song. When she agreed, admittedly giddy from the request, Kira helped her onto the stage, playing the gentleman except for one whisper in here ear, letting her know that he was doing this for the sake of appearance, since it was her birthday. Not that he intended to keep her from her boyfriend at the table. As the woman blushed, Kira looked at the woman and announced the next song, one of her favorites, which her boyfriend had asked him to sing. "Now, this is a special request, so I hope you like it mam. It's Stevie Wonder, Superstition. My voice may not compare to the smoothness that his voice carried, but I'll do my best to sing the song as he would in my place.

Third song.

Suven listened to the show with curiosity. It wasn't that his kind didn't know what music was at all. The idea of creating something especially to please someone's senses wasn't new to him. Humans had completely different tastes in art, though. This kind of music had a lot more beat than what he was used to, and he was worried for a second about the way his heart started pounding. Was this normal? He knew he didn't have any known cardiac issues, he was a little too young for that, and his implants would have warned him if he had to be worried about anything...

Then again, maybe he was just over-analyzing things.

One of his neighbors nudged him quite rudely, awakening him from his thoughts. Quite unnecessary. "You like that, Suv?" The young man asked. "I knew this guy was pretty good, but I never had the time to come down here and listen to him."

"Well, it's interesting." The Sanyi replied. Pet names was another thing humans did that baffled him. His name was already fairly short, there was no need to cut off almost half of it. Still, he tolerated that. "It's not what I expected."

"I heard he's really hot in bed, too!" Another one of his co-workers piped up, a short brunette whose pleasures in life included telling dirty jokes and making guys uncomfortable around her. "He'll do everything you pay him for, even guys."

The first co-worker laughed. "Well, he looks like a girl, no surprise there!"

Seeing that she hadn't managed to shock the guy, the brunette decided to add more. "Oh yeah? I heard he could be one of those xenophiles."

"What does that mean?" Suven asked. He knew most of the english vocabulary, but strange words like this weren't used often enough for him to pick up. The suffix "phile" suggested a kind of obsession, but he had no idea what the rest meant.

"Means he'll have sex with you."

Suven's golden eyes widened and he sank in his seat with an embarassed mew as his colleagues laughed at his reaction.

Unfortunately, Kira could hear quite well what the group was saying about him, and had to force himself now to either sigh or growl out his aggravation. He wasn't a xenophile, who would couple with anything as the young woman had suggested. Sure, he wasn't picky when it came to bedding with someone, all men were equally attractive to his eye, so long as they were compatible and he had no worries about paying fees for inter-species love making. Some species made it a point of making you pay to have sex with them, and if he couldn't have sex for free, he wasn't going to have sex. Kira didn't have sex with anyone who asked him, only those who agreed when he asked, and yet these people still thought that he'd couple wi-

A quick wave from one of the other workers brought Kira back from his mental ranting, and he nodded, giving a mouthed number-letter code, telling them witch songs to put in next. Taking the woman's eyes into a somewhat irritated glance, that glance moved over the rest of the assembled patrons. Quite a few showed startled expressions, but when the music in the background started to play, some understood his motivations for his mood, as some of the patrons knew how he tried to get into the 'mood' of whatever song he was singing.

Current song.

As he started to song, Kira's outfit changed slightly, the holographic projections switching the visual to match the outfit that Kira preferred to wear during the current number.

Current outfit.

As that song came to an end, Kira wiped a few beads of sweat from his brow, then told the crowd that he was going to take a small break, then he'd come back out for another song for the woman's birthday. Kira normally wasn't one to take such quick offense, much less to advertise just how much he heard while performing onstage, but this woman's comments about him, whether made as a joke or not, needed to be dealt with. Since he was here as a singer, then sing his opinions he would.

Sure enough, when he came back out, he proceeded to the mike, slipped a particular data chip into his mikestand, and his outfit changed to a slightly gothic theme, as the next number began to play.

Everything is different today, I like it, like it... I feel very different today, I like it, like it... I'm not gonna be in your parade, cause I don't like it, you think I'm a dirty little game, you think I like it... You made up this fantasy with me, but I don't like it. I want you to get away from me, that's how I like it, how do you like it?

Turning to face the woman who'd called him a xenophile as he spoke the next verses, he let his silent annoyance creep slowly into his gaze as he spoke, uncaring what anybody thought of his actions. He was no xenophile, nor any other kind of phile that he didn't agree to being called, so as far as he was concerned, this woman needed to be taken down a few notches for talking about other people in a negative light, especially when said person was right before them. As the song finally ended, Kira took his bow, put the mike where it rested, and then left the stage, while the next performer was hurriedly readied for his act, while Kira stormed through the backdoors to his own room. "...God damn rumormongers, my life is my life, and I don't like people spreading rumors or their own misplaced and misguided ideas about the life I live."

The manager happened to hear this conversation about the 'woman' who had set Kira off, and sighed as he knocked on the door. "The woman in question seems to want to speak to you." Kira rolled his eyes as he took his shirt off, peeling the holographic suit off his figure and tossing it onto a nearby chair. Coming to the door, Kira looked to see if the woman in question was at his door. Seeing as she was not, Kira turned to the manager. "Well you can tell her that I'll come down to tell her what I think of her high and mighty opinions once I'm out of this suit, that way we can both give our opinions on the other in person as two civilians, instead of a civie and a worker. You can also tell her that if she's not willing to wait, then she can go fuck herself for all I care. Meanwhile, I will be getting dressed."

The manager rubbed his forehead at his latest headache, something which seemed to occur once every other month with Kira, given that his choice in bed partners weren't chosen at random, nor for the sake of instant gratification either. The manager knew that Kira only bed with someone who was in a similar situation to Kira, or who understood his own situation and didn't mind the terms that such a night together would have. Nothing dangerous, nor too secretive, just that Kira wasn't looking for a long-term attachment, since most people on the station were either not gay themselves, or would live far longer than a human would. So while the night was usually a short term thing, wherein the other would enjoy the night as lovers, not as mere 'bed partners', but as two people who both wanted a closer connection than simple sex, something which could only be offered between friends.

The beginning of the next song didn't quite have the effect Kira had intended; the engineers had a few drinks in them, and were beginning to get quite merry, though Suven avoided all offered alcohol, pretexting that it didn't have the same effect on his kind as it did on humans. In fact, he couldn't understand why they would, on purpose, mess up their perception and poison their bodies to the point of getting sick. Sanyi had entirely different ideas about recreationnal drugs, it seemed.

As the singer went on, deliberately singing about his cowerker's comments, people around him were having a hard time stiffling their laughter. One of them prodded the brunette, grinning from ear to ear. "I guess he overheard ya!"

"I can't believe that ass is doing this!" She squealed back, red in the face but giggling pretty hard. At the other end of the table, the birthday girl shot them a warning glance, but turned back in her seat, unwilling to miss anything from the show.

The first coworker ignored her and went on. "Looks like he's pretty pissed-off, too! Hun, you're not making yourself any friends tonight!"

The girl put her arm around Suven's shoulders, an agression of his personnal bubble that he clearly didn't like. "Aw, I'll go and tell him I'm sorry. I'll even bring a peace offering."

Suven only understood what she meant about this when, after the show, she dragged him to the back of the bar to "appologize" to the singer, but he found that her grip was just a little too strong for him to escape by now. "This is entirely unnecessary!" He protested weakly.

"Nah, it'll be an experience!" She replied cheerfully.
