The little sleepy town had caught his interest for just that reason. He came with two degrees in hand but decided to not mention them or take mind of them until he left to go back to college to get his masters. He set his last box down in the living room of his small home he was renting in the town. He didn't know how long he'd be here and that suited him just fine. Robby Monroe took a deep breath. The air was thick with rain, giving the sleepy town a dismal look as the high noon sun was blocked out by the clouds. He stepped outside and looked around, pulling his door shut behind him. He grinned and waved hello to a young woman walked down the street with her toddler's hand in her own. He already liked this place. All he had to do now was find a job. He slid inside one more and grabbed his wallet and keys off the table, locking up and walking out of the tiny fenced in yard. The house he was renting was smack dab in the middle of the town, whose population he had to guess was nine hundred at the most. He smiled and started walking towards the end of the street where the town center and all the main shops and public service buildings were. He liked the quaint feel the area had, a street surrounded by an old park, a raised stage like gazebo in the middle. He was sure that the town celebrated quite a bit here, it was perfect for a concert or party. He slid his fingers over the bark of a tree as he looked around for hiring signs. The first he saw was an old little diner, the kind of place that opens so early it might as well be open every hour of every day. And he half bet it was. He took in the old paint that was chipping off, the Sixties styled sign that read 'Hopkins Diner and Family Restaurant.' "Defiantly an old place" he spoke to himself softly, his kind blue eyes smiling before his slightly chapped lips did. He walked across the plaza to the place, sliding inside and flicking his long pony tail over his shoulder. "Can I help you hun?" A tall middle aged woman approached him, she wore black jeans that hugged her hips just right and a button down white shirt, neatly tucked in, her dirty apron over it. Her long dyed- blonde hair had brown roots showing through and was pulled up in a bun that was half fallen out. She looked like she'd been here since five this morning. "Oh yes" he smiled at her brightly, putting his hands in his jeans pockets. "I'm interested in the job. I just moved here from Austin." She seemed pleased with his words and motioned for him to follow her into the back of the restaurant. "Have a seat hun, I'll bring the boss right on out. That sign been up for ages and not a soul's come in to apply. We've been needing another day worker fer month's now. You're a right God send you are." She walked away with out another word. Robby smiled a bit and shifted as he smoothed his hands over the smooth and perfectly clean table top. If he got a job this easy it would make his day just that much better. He didn't know about being called a 'God send' but if it got him this job he would deal. He glanced up as the woman walked back with a man that was aging well, perhaps fifty, half bald with heavy eye brows, watery blue eyes and smile wrinkles around his mouth and eyes. The man walked over and slid into the other side of the booth, adjusting himself slightly to make his protruding beer gut fit with out too much discomfort. "Hello there sonny." The man had a deep Texan accent and gapped front teeth, stained from smoking or spitting tobacco. "Good afternoon Sir." Robby greeted kindly, his own accent was subtle, it would take a lot to notice and even more to place. He smiled, his own teeth perfectly straight in his mouth from years of braces and the still worn retainers, white and well cared for. He licked his lips. "So I heard you are interested in the job I've got advertised in the window there." The man said and put his arms, crossed, on the table. He had let his expression fall from his face, a serious tone taking over his accent thick voice. "Yes Sir I am." Robby had always been of the opinion that being polite could never bring any bad in life. Sir's and Mam's were handed out like free candy from him as he believed all deserved respect until they did something too stupid to stomach the words any more. "I just moved into town and wanted to pick up a job in service to pass the time. I'm taking a break from school back in Austin and figured this town'd be the perfect place to relax and take my mind off things." The man laughed "Well then sonny get your self a pair of black pants and a white button down and you start tomorrow at four a.m sharp! I'm Ted Hopkins, call me Boss. What's your name sonny?" Ted extended a large hand, calloused from years of work in a kitchen. "Robby sir, Robby Monroe." He couldn't believe it'd been that easy. "Do I need to bring in my resume or references? Previous work places?" "Nah sonny, don't bother. You got the face of a good kid, I'll bet my horse and two bucks you wouldn't do nothing bad." He gave his gap-toothed smile and slid out of the booth, offering a hand to help Robby up. Robby took the hand and stood up, shaking the man's hand again. "Alright then. Thank you sir!" he said with a big smile. "I will see you at four am tomorrow morning!" He gave a courteous nod of his head and turned to leave. "And sonny, wear some black shoes to, got to look professional on this job." Ted waved and headed back towards the kitchen door. "Yes sir. Thank you sir." He nodded his head again and gave a wave, walking as if on cloud nine. The next morning he walked in at three thirty am, sharp, dressed in a long sleeved white button down and well fit black slacks. He wore his comfortable black loafers and carried a simple messenger bag that had his wallet, cell phone and a few books and note books in it, just in case he got a decent break. He looked around, seeing a few patrons, most of which had a hat on the counter or table next to them. He smiled a bit and headed towards the waitress he'd first spoken to the day before. "Hey there Robby. You're here awfully early. You're not scheduled until four!" She seemed yet again pleased by him. "I never got the chance to introduce myself yesterday did I hun?" She smiled a smoker's smile and held her hand out. "I'm Lucy Hopkins.. Ted's sister in law." She put her hands on her hips. "Well since you're here so early let's start your training early. Follow me hun." She walked towards the kitchen doors. He followed obediently, putting her name to memory as he looked around. The door didn't lead directly to the kitchen, there was a small office to once side, Ted sat inside looking sleepy with a cup of coffee by his side and a paper in his hands. To the other side was the kitchen and farther back was a locker room that looked to be for staff. This room is where Lucy led him. She pointed to the only open locker. "That one there is yours. You can put a lock on it if you like but no one here is gonna steal nothing of yours. You get three aprons, you have to wash and press them on your own free time at home. Every day you gotta come in with a clean one on. Your long hair needs to stay pulled up or under a cap of some sort. Wash yours hands often and you'll be good to go." She led him through the routine, gave him a paper copy of the menu with orders to memorize it. With that he was thrust out on his own like a baby bird flying for the first time. He got a ticket pad and wrote his name at the top as instructed and was instructed to man the bar. And so he did. He refilled coffee and took breakfast orders, greeting new customers with a chipper smile and a kind 'good morning'. |
